one HDR station had the game set on wide screen mode.
i kept yelling to get his attention but he was probably day dreaming or something

so maybe train up or get a better staff next evo. games will run smoother and people will get shirts.
Don’t take this the wrong way, but Evo doesn’t need suggestions or ideas and Evo sure as fuck doesn’t need complaints about volunteer judges.
What Evo needs is people willing and capable to solve problems. So if you have a suggestion that you’re actually down to carry out yourself, then send a note to one of the head staff members whenever the next Evo event is announced.
Otherwise, these complaints serve no purpose other than to vent frustration. Which is fine, if that makes you happy.

I agree, but you know SRK peeps love to have their healthy discussions on topics…
I agree with what Shirts just said… I flew on friday morning since I didn’t have to play sf4 until the second wave of pools… by 2oclock when I got to the actual event, the first place I went was the table to get my badge and shirt. I was told shirts and badges were gone… but I could get a 07 or 08 dvd… I was like ::gas face:: to me old dvd’s are worthless since I’ve already seen them from attending the actual event. This was my 6th year and I’ve seen how they handled past situations. I still think this is bigger than the shirts… it’s a problem evo has been dealing with for a while… I was there the year we had to wait in line for deep, and it wasn’t fun.
I think it’s great that this year I could just walk up in the event without having to worry about signups. The online mandatory registration is a good idea, but left the shirts and badges out for dry… it’s all connected… registration, shirts, badges, pools, and lengh of the tourneys… (They are all tied together)
I don’t know if you guys noticed, but evo finished on time this year! that’s a big thing for evo staff having over 1,000 plus people to deal with… I have been there in past years when we had to cut down on the amount of matches played in finals, and even cancelling certain events cause there was not enough time… If you ask me finishing everything on time is far more priceless than a shirt… BUT, the shirt thing needs to be looked at as well as the other problems that are connected to each other. It’s still a work in progress, and we can def. do better next year.
I think I was the very last person to get a shirt… I was told choose dvd since we got no more shirts or badges… lucky for me JWong didn’t want his shirt and traded for dvd… I got Justin original evo shirt and I was all set, but I woulda prob been mad too if I didn’t get one. I like colecting them… I have one from all the evo’s I gone to.
The other thing I think needs work is the pools. How come it’s been 10 years and players still don’t know what their pools look like. Specially now since online reg. is done prior to the event. I looked online like crazy on both sites, srk and evo but didn’t find anything… it’s like players had to keep asking “yo who’s in your pool?” I’m not saying update the brackets online as they happen, even though that woulod be nice, but can we atleast see who we are playing against?
I think this is very important since there is still a MAJOR problem happening at evo and that is the “Black Brackets of Death” good players are still beein bunched into a pool and have to take each other out… not gona go into who was in what pool, but there def. were some uneven pools out there. This one had like 4 top names on the upper part and “scrubs”(no names) on the bottom half of the bracket. When my boy told the (what seemed like an unexperienced) judge “yo, are you kidding me… just look at the bracket!” He wouldn’t acknowledge that clearly the pool was over saturated and uneven, his answer was "hey man, there is nothing I can do, I’m just running brackets"
My sf4 pool had nothing but “scrubs” (no diss intended). This is far more of a problem than the badges and shirts, even though I think that’s still important… @ evo 2010 can we please have online brackets up before the actual event? this would deal with this problem since we could see who’s playing who. Personally I think the best case scenario would be to have them online, but also create an EVO iPhone App. were you could see all this as the event is unfolding (just hoping on this one :'D)
I dont want to rant too much, even though I think I just did… but I think this discusion is good as long as it’s constructive and not negative. Overall I think the EVO staff did a great job! pulling together yeat another amazing year, and IMO the best year ever! There are still things that need to be worked out, there’s always room for improvement. 2010 should be pretty amazing… I still stand by my evo statement…
EVOlution gets better and better every year!!
This happens every year cause if evo implemented real seeding then these boards would see non-stop bitching about who deserves what and such and such. Everyone levels there shit up every year and we get more and more top players.
Plus, when you get peaced out of the tourney doesn’t even matter in my eyes unless your gunning for top 3 (and have a legitimate chance at getting it) where money is involved. Even then, you would have to have one of the other top 3 players in your pool for it to even matter cause you shouldn’t be losing to anyone else anyway. Places 4-1000 are just for bragging rights.
it is good to vent and i WILL contact the higher ups to fix this shit. this is how shit gets fixed by people discussing them on the forums and then presenting a solution to whomever it may concern. oh and shankar, same crazy thing happened to me with the shirt. traded the shirt off my back for dogfaces EVO shirt, now thats an EVO moment.
i know, that’s why I think we should fix that
how?
It isn’t really that hard to fix certain issues.
Plenty of people like myself where there Thursday, we could have confirmed that day and received our badge and shirt then. That would take are of some people early.
Friday morning set aside time for morning pool players to get their badge and shirts. There was already around 20 judges, maybe more. Each judge could have been in that bull ring in the center of the convention center with the list of players by last name. Each judge has one list with the first letter of last names.
It would not be hard to give confirm 600 players, each judge would have to confirm an avg of 25 people.
That could be done in an hour easily.
Follow me?
If each judge had different names then people would have to walk around looking for their judge. Lots of people were also in two pools so even if they said go to your pool judge there would be lots of people still wandering in a circle and pushing people around to find their right judge.
Most people don’t even show up to their pools for hours and judges had to be at their stations ready to start whenever a match up showed since it was hectic.
Everything is easy on paper, harder to actually do since lots of people dont listen.
I do agree they could have made a line and checked people in since it sucks people didn’t get their shirt and badge, though it would have taken long and the tournament already had a 9 am start time.
I honestly can’t give evo any suggestions on how to do things I’ve never run tournaments this big, nor would I be able to.
You’re right, it isn’t that hard if you’ve got nothing else to do. Unfortunately everyone’s busy and the judges are already sacrificing most of their day to run tournaments (which btw is a completely thankless job). So if your solution is “have the existing volunteers do more work” then prepare to be disappointed.
Look, two years ago there was an extra pair of projectors pointed at the walls on the side displaying the names of players who were matched on the stage. It was cool and it helped keep the audience involved with what was going on, added more hype, etc. This year all the people who were taking care of that were busy doing other things which took priority.
As a general trend, Evo gets increasingly complex every year. In order to retain all the old features while constantly implementing new features, Evo needs more people to step up every year. Like i said before, there’s no shortage of ideas to make Evo better. There’s a shortage of people willing to show up and pitch in.
by posting the brackets online a week earlier… if there are heavy pools, and weak pools, then let’s use common sense and move people around. Yes the machine is good for randomizing 1,000 players, but we’re humans with brains, we’re all big boys, let’s swap players and make the most even pools and brackets with the best judgement. :china:
I don’t see what is hard to follow.
Tourney starts at 9, check ins at 8 for morning pools.
If you have a morning pool and don’t check in, it means you don’t want a shirt anyway.
If you have an evening pool check in at 4, tourney at 5.
It is not as hard as you guys are making it out to be.
Just like first day of high school getting your schedule, it doesn’t take more than a hour for everybody to get their class schedule and my school had more people than EVO.
26 letters in the English alphabet give each judge 2 lists.
Judge 1=A-B
Judge 2=C-D
It is not rocket science.
There were more than 13 judges, there was more than enough.
The judges wouldn’t have anything to do until the tourney starts, so don’t say they were busy with brackets. I’m not saying the judges are worthless, I’m saying they could have been used to help get the right people badges and shirts.
You must be joking. Swap players? Think about the inevitable hellstorm of drama you’re inviting.
How about this? You volunteer to be a judge, and we’ll let you tell the other judges that they’re gonna be required to do two extra hours of work. I mean, since none of them have anything they’d rather be doing inbetween running tournaments …
Not a problem at all.
You ain’t saying anything.
It would not take 2 hours to hand out 50 shirts, thanks for playing though.
Is that a formal commitment? Just making sure so there’s no confusion.
Btw you’re the one who said an hour x2. You can’t tell people to show up an hour early to pick up shirts/badges without having judges there to meet them.
Different sets of judges.
Where you at EVO?
I don’t think judges worked for 12+ hours, morning-night.
Okay, let’s review.
It took you 15 minutes to come up with a half-assed idea that requires 30 volunteers to each do an extra hour of work. Yet when i ask you if you’d like to be one of those volunteers, you instantly back away. I already told you, Evo needs people willing to step up and get things done. Evo does NOT need people coming up with obvious suggestions and acting like they’re contributing without pledging any actual EFFORT.
How are you still having trouble understanding this?
If you want to vent and complain, this is the place to do it. If you want to make Evo better, Evo is the place to do it. I’m not trying to get you to stop venting or complaining. You’re absolutely welcome to do that because that’s 80% of the reason God gave us the internet. All i’m trying to do is get you to realize that unless your suggestions are backed by the effort to carry them out, you’re only wasting your time because they aren’t going to happen. But it’s absolutely your choice what you want to do with your time, so if this makes you feel better then by all means keep doing it.
Now if there’s anyone who actually wants to commit effort to improving Evo, please speak up and let’s figure out how we can get some shit done.
“How about this? You volunteer to be a judge, and we’ll let you tell the other judges that they’re gonna be required to do two extra hours of work. I mean, since none of them have anything they’d rather be doing inbetween running tournaments”
“Not a problem at all”
RIF
If you want to play dumb and tell me it is impossible, I would have more respect for you.
I went in there Friday morning, no line got a badge and a shirt in less than a minute total.
Where you at EVO?
Yeah, i was there. I helped run two Tekken 6 tournaments, moved TV’s, hooked up PS3s, helped prepare the brackets for the judges, stood behind the desk answering the same questions about t-shirts 200 times, ran around doing i don’t know how many errands. Even managed to make a combo video for Evo. And got to play a grand total of one match the entire weekend.
What did you do?
