Having the switches activate near the gate is fine, if not even preferred, but the problem with the 309MJ is that they activate so close to the gate that the diagonals require a lot of force in that direction to activate both microswitches. I’m not aware if the regular K-mount version suffers from the same issue.
Yea, to be honest, I could try and rule it out for the K-mount version. But it’s still not an “MJ” and I feel like that’s the one ppl are trying to speak up about.
Wanting for boarding. So I will share what I got from abuget cup.
about “Fanta” term, SAINT told me back then, there was a populer arcade in korea called “Fantasia” they use old taeyong stick, then it became populer and called “Fanta Stick”. So fanta term is refer to the old stick that used by Fantasia Arcade.
Saint is a true modder, he made his own Frankenstein stick, he grab anything he can get and try it, and he doesn’t have any preference stick, he keeps experimenting. And he always bring his own tools in his backpack, so he can tune his stick anytime in the tournament. Buttons is using cherry blue switch.
For the stick he use on abuget 2017 is taeyong base, 9mm stock shaft, soft black grommet feels about green golden fanta grommets (he said he doesn’t like hard grommets), 15mm white plastic actuator (I beleive POM/delrin material), and panasonic switch.
He said to me he prefer black grommet than silicone, but he haven’t try golden grommets. since golden silicone comes with different hardness, maybe he will have another opinion after try it. Maybe I will provide black gromment for the next bacth of Golden Fanta. I’m a bit courious why he prefer black grommets.
He told me that what he use is just preference, he doesn’t tell that his mod is the best/superior, he just give me inputs from his experiences.
He said, JDCR use almost the same stick what saint provide. He said “almost” maybe because saint keep making adjusment on the go.
Ater the tournament is over, he went to my booth and ask me for an golden fanta set for him to try on his stick. He choose 8mm shaft, 15.5mm actuator and black battop.
Then I say goodbay to him, he request me if I can provide him 15mm golden actuator.
I try his stick using 15mm plastic actuator, and it can hit diagonals easily. I think taeyong base have closser switch arrangements than Myoungshin, anyone can confirm this?
I also get some measurements from Rtech green lever.
14.5mm actuator really makes diagonals hard to reach even it use 7mm shaft for deeper throw, also it doesn’t feels smoth when i move the stick, maybe it was overly used. Rtech also bought a Golden Fanta set btw.
I doesn’t have much disscusion with knee because language barrier, but I saw his stick use green lever solid white battop.
Ok so I had a chance to play around with my 309 helpme. Tried both A2’s and A3’s. I can see why people would be in favor for the A3’s. With the tension of the grommet being on the lower end (in my opinion), the A3’s felt like they complimented the lever better.
Diagonals still felt subtly better.
@wazwuz Nice post. I do believe the Taeyoung lever’s switches are indeed a bit closer. I think the 8mm Golden shaft works great with the Taeyoung so I agree with Saint on that. I should try out his combination actually since I sticked with the stock actuator in the shorter side (~14.75mm) which works well. Very Green lever-like but with the switches being closer, you don’t get any disadvantages as you mentioned with RTech’s model.
I bought a 309 mj from makestick and it came with A3s. I’ve been at it for a few days but maybe it’s a bit too soft for me. Makestick sells a heavier grommet but shipping would be 20 again, and focus attack seems to be out of stock. Are there any other places that sell harder grommets for crowns?
My Crown CWL-309MJ-KMS-ST25 arrived from FocusAttack the other day. It has the A2 switches. Haven’t put a lot of time in it yet but all this talk of the A3 switches makes me curious.
I’m definitely interested in checking them out myself to feel the difference.
Very informative! I knew Saint was very much into experimenting with his arcade sticks but this is on another level. Thanks for the report!
@wazwuz shipment arrived today. I immediately put in the red 65 grommet and it is definitely my preferred grommet. my wave dashes and electrics are MUCH better and MUCH more consistant. I will go ahead and try out the other actuator sizes/shaft sizes. btw what were the sizes? Its very hard for me to tell as I dont have a way to measure them (the actuators) but the shafts I can tell from largest to smallest(just dont know the actual sizes lol).
@wazwuz my shipment also came in today. the first set up im trying is 9mm shaft, green 45 grommet, 16.5mm actuator with the switch support and im really liking it so far. i may try the blue or red grommets later but im happy with this set up. Thanks again for everything you do!
Are u telling me it feels like a 4lb spring on a sanwa stick? Because damn that takes ALOT of effort even with a oversized actuator and a bat top. While at first its easy, wavedash, bdc, and getting electrics out were super fast, but fatigue settles in like crazy when u play back to back matches. Then i finally switched over to myoungshin fanta, it took no effort at all and was nowhere close to having the tension of a 4lb spring lol.
correct, but for the 3rd batch (the same set I gave to Saint JDCR KNEE) I remove the sky blue and change it with Clear.
clear 35
green 45
blue 55
red 65
shaft:
8mm, 9mm, 10mm (you can compare it side by side)
actuator:
15.5mm ; 16mm ; 16.5mm also you can compare it side by side
I’m so happy can help everyone to have better K stick using Golden Fanta I made, it really encourage me to do more.
UPDATE from Abuget 2017:
I just remember, Saint told me that he doesn’t like switch support for his taeyong base Frankenstain Stick, and he recommend me to remove it from my Airbag. Then he try it for a while, after he try it he said it was worst and he ask me to put it back lol.
maybe taeyong already have good alignment not like Myoungshin.
after that he try my black stick that use myungshing with acrylic switch support from golden fanata. he like it, he said this stick is good, that’s why I give him my black VM-V stick. so he can learn and give us me more feedback when he have time at home.
All right I am exaggerating a bit and I have no interest in Japanese tension springs so I can’t really compare. It’s relatively harder that most Korean levers. The closest thing I can compare to atm is probably Golden Fanta blue grommets but a slight notch higher. Hard but playable. I just used Myoungshin as a baseline since everything lighter are Crown’s, 2017 Taeyoung and light Golden Fanta grommets. Heavier for Kaze, old Taeyoung, Fujin and heavier Golden grommets.
And since he was trying to compare it to a 309, it’s like comparing an orange to a watermelon. Also I am gonna assume he hasn’t tried something heavy like the Fujin anyways. For owning multiple levers, the Fujin was a surprise anyways.
To be fair, you went from something very heavy as I assume to something relatively lighter. Everyone else who just used a normal JLF and probably went to a Myoungshin or similar probably felt overwhelmed.
Fujin is super heavy compared to the 309 help me. Just imagine the hardest possible grommet. I got so used to the tension that I ended up throwing in a 60a shore grommet into the 309 and even then the tension doesn’t even compare.
Nothing is heavier than a jlf 4lb spring lol but it’s a different kind of tension. The easiest way to use the fujin v2 imo is to use to only use the switches and not touch the gate at all. You don’t get as tired playing like that but it’ll take time to adjust. The fujin v2 is only heavy if you ride the gate all day and at that point you would most likely have injured yourself.
Yesterday I received my set of Gersung A3s for 309-MJ. The only difference I can spot between A2 and A3 is that A3 have a shorter actuation distance. And this matters a lot. 309-MJ with A2s is a terrible lever - dead zone is too big and diagonals don’t actuate almost at all. The definition of living in Missed Input City
309-MJ with A3s on the other hand is a complete product - 25g grommet and relatively small A3 dead zone lets you play for hours without any fatigue or a missed input.
