@4r5: nah, we tried to get some games in a Leilani’s [hope I spelled that right] place that one weekend but didn’t really work out @_@.

Like 4649 said, we’re pretty much the MD crew for this game which isn’t saying much [unless 4r5 wants to get in o_o]. As far as shoulder buttons go, I say if they want to use them be my guest. I’ve gotten use to my stick and characters where I don’t even rely that much on sabaki anymore honestly.

As far as tourny rules go, however, I think it would be a good idea to get this discusion out of the way until something else possible arises.

i disagree with that top five simply based on the fact that duke, jivatma and lien have TERRIBLE matchups with xiaolon and wild wolf among others

Lord…Duke’s L1 counter move is easy to pull off. I can hit it off of one attack (though that’s a terrible thing to do, middle of a block string is the way to go).

I agree with 4649 that Xio is a bad match-up for Duke. I’ll even agree that Wild Wolf is a pain for Duke.

and goddamnit…Delware people want to get together with the MD folks for some MIRA. At the very least, I do. I don’t remember if it was 4649 or 4r5 that I played at the C3 tourny last year, but that shit was a lot of fun.

Either of you remember that? Duke, Athena, and Kula team? We were actually drawing some interest for a while there.

I can kind of understand why some people would throw Duke up above his actual tiering. He’s actually the character that gets complained about the most when new players come in.

I mean, top tier characters beat you with pretty much standard fare priority-combo-super-otg type stuff. When Duke beats you, it’s by bounding your ass off the ground and walls and in general just making things look embarrassing.

Really, is there anything more ferocious in fighting games when compared to Duke punch? How about ‘punt you across the screen’ kick series?

My opinion, great offense especially when she gets her mixups going. However, absolutely no defense what so ever [save for lvl3 counter but I’ve heard a lot of bad things about it in MIRA].

I will admit that I wanted to try her out, mainly because of her sickening amount of resets.

there is nothing hard about duke’s reversal

plus you just end up wasting meter on duke’s firewave by throwing it out for no reason anyway

i actually agree with webster, in some situations firewave is REALLY good to keep some characters at bay. last time i played eddie lopez and daidoji’s duke’s with soiree i had problems stepping the wave- it has some really obtuse, funky hitbox stuff going on where it’ll look like you’re safe but an invisible part will clip you so it’s best to just block it, but it can be used to stop a midrange offense attempt or reverse a far poke - not good to throw out randomly, but good to force a midscreen mistake.
best thing to abuse with duke though is super armour through a poke and combo into reverse-your-controls super though, i still say.

also firestomp is REALLY dumb

i took off work for this coming C3 so we can probably set up some MIRA- i’m also going to otakon with most of the guilty gear crew who seem to like this game so maybe we’ll set up something there too.

By firestomp you are referring to 236k right? You’re right if that’s the case. It has absurd flexibility. Far to mid range and it works like a 360, low hitting fireball. Up close after a knock down, the wave sticks around and forces the opponent to get up blocking.

One other odd aspect of the follow up punch to firestomp is that it rotates the camera. I hear all the time from people I play against that when this occurs near a wall or corner it makes any subsequent recovery rolls or attacks difficult to perform reliably. I’m sure this is something that you could get used to and figure out, all the same…
