I think what personified Supes not giving a fuck (other than tackling zod into the middle of Smallville) was when he hopped over the gas tanker thrown by Zod and let it destroy the building behind him. Someone should make an animated gif of that moment.
Save the city or the world, kill zod or let him kill the bystandersâŚhrmâŚdecisions decisions.
But seriously, Superman should have lost, that bitch was using instant transmission and would have eventually learned to fully control her powers even better than Zod. Superman in a âsemi-realisticâ setting still needs to rely on plot armor with all that power.
The main thing Man of Steel taught me is that thereâs a ridiculous amount of traditionalist Superman fans who want Superman to be a boring, shallow, black and white character that the majority of people will hate.
Oh and just because buildings are being destroyed doesnât mean its in relation to 9/11. Maybe itâs just because itâs a great spectacle in a blockbuster and youâre a prick. Plus, this movie is when Clark is only beginning to become Superman and hasnât developed into the full-fledged character. It was his first superpowered fight ever, you canât expect him to know exactly what to do morally.
Are you kidding? The only thing saving him from being portrayed in MoS as boring, shallow, and black and white in this movie was Cavillâs acting. The characterization in this movie is flat as a board.
I think most people who are familiar with the comics were hoping for something along the lines of Superman as portrayed in All Star, Whatever Happened To The Man of Tomorrow?, the animated series⌠you know. Stories that get right to the heart of the character, told by people who actually know what the fuck theyâre doing.
And nobodyâs necessarily saying that the movie is trying to relate to 9/11. People are saying that in post-9/11 America, the sight of buildings being wrecked is going to evoke 9/11 whether the movie intends it or not.
People want Superman to be an invincible no it all that can do everything and is always right, but just so happens to share the same ideology that they do. What they got WAS Invincible lol. Which is a better comic than anything Supes has put out in a FOREVER.
The problem people have is that they are attempting to turn supes into someone he isnât. No one is saying he needs to retain the campy super patriotic tone of the golden age incarnation, but rather just the core values that have informed his character since his inception. From reeves to the new 52, these values stayed the same cause they are the foundations that make him uniqueâŚuprooting them isnt just a betrayal to the character but a completely different character altogether. Although to be fair I dont think this was intentional from the writers side of things. I think the problem is that nolan and people who generally write comic book movies have a notable disdain for the source material so instead of reading whats been going on in comics post silver age, they decide"well we cant make it too much like the comics cause those are silly and stupid, lets make it more realistic and grounded"which AKA translates to dull, sterile and completely devoid of the original intention and purpose.
Nolan promised a Superman that would be relatable not just a more realistic vision of Superman. This wasnât fully delivered, the only things that were relatable were the scenes with Clark and Jonathan Kent
That was the dumbest shit and showed me how little Nolan actually knew about Batman.
And I donât get how people are still on that Supes isnât relatable shit, heâs one of the most relatable heroes out there, especially compared to somone like Batman.
I think the ânot relatableâ part was that he was invincible, people stopped caring about his character. Have you seen Superman IV, he has telekinesis and uses it to save people and rebuild The Wall of China
It was originally scripted that he would fly around to save people and rebuild the Wall at super-speed. The production company kept siphoning off money from the budget for other projects, so they had to half-ass those scenes and have Superman just sort of look at the stuff and add in the telekinesis/âmasonry visionâ special effects in post. There was a lot of behind-the-scenes fuckery happening on Superman IV that contributed to the badness of the end product.
Looking back to see what was also released in 1987, there was Predator 1, Lethal Weapon, RoboCop, Last Emperor, Three Men and Baby, Spaceballs, Beverly Hills Cop 2, Hellraiser, Full Metal Jacket, The Lost Boys, SpaceBalls, GI JOE! Might just be the best year in cinema history lol
