Kneel Before SRK - The Man of Steel Movie Thread

Just saw the movie, but going to see it again before I pass final judgement

The pacing in the movie was off, whole childhood aspect was skimmed over and there were times where it felt there was a scene missing or was cut. Action was mostly great, but Batman syndrome of being too close at times. IMAX 3d was blurry mess most of the times, so when I rewatch it it’s going to be in 2D (3D seemed like a waste to be honest).

Christopher Reeves’ Superman

Spoiler

Anyone else notice how his face changed into Christopher Reeves when he was looking up through the gravity beam

lol at the end of the movie my friend said he didn’t see it either, but I swear he looked just like Christopher Reeves.

Well supes childhood isn’t really important.

I remember someone awhile ago comparing his life to the progression of Chist’s life in that you only need the birth and adult parts cause that’s ultimately where all the important things happen.

Of course his childhood is important, it’s what makes him Superman. His entire past seemed to be skimmed over too quickly, some of the best parts of the movie were the scenes where he was dealing with his emotions, having to hold back and appearing weak. I would have welcomed another half hour of character development, maybe then other characters like Perry White would have more depth. The movie seemed to be rushing towards the Kyrptonian showdown, it wasn’t till the first battle occured did the pacing seem right.

Antje Traue (Faora-Ul) is fine as hell in this movie.

Anyone play Halo, is it just me or did the ship designs remind anyone else of the Convenant ships.

You are not alone for a split i thought it looked like Reeves, and then i figured it was just the 3d but my friends brought it up to me right after the movie. Any body catch easter eggs? I only caught Lexcorp trucks.

Wasn’t that the case with Watchmen? TBH I liked that film.

He’s right about a couple things:

[details=Spoiler] - It is a predominantly cold movie. Superman stories should have a big heart and lots of humanity. Man of Steel’s characters are mostly underdeveloped. A lot of them are still total strangers by the end. The movie is full of cardboard cutout people. The writing just isn’t there.

  • And I guess I have to agree that it was weird how Superman didn’t try to take the fight elsewhere, but that’s one thing where you have to give the movie some license to depart from logic. An epic battle with stuff to look at (e.g. in a city) is going to work better on the screen than an “epic” battle in a flat, featureless landscape (e.g. in a cornfield).

Yes, there’s the whole “inferred holocaust” thing, but given that we don’t actually see innocent people dying in these scenes, I’d hesitate to use it as evidence of an amoral, careless superhero. It’s more down to sloppy modern filmmaking where explosions and stupid crashing things have to happen ever half a second. Though, as a point of fact, we do see Superman breaking away from the fight to snatch the occasional airborne human from the jaws of death, but in a movie where every major combatant has superspeed, it understandably doesn’t happen often.

I didn’t much like the endless crashing around and constant violence myself, but that’s mainly due to how the movie dwelled on it for so long that it felt like a waste of time after a while.[/details]

He kind of sets up his whole review as if he was doing the movie a favor by tolerating its departures from canon–both traditional and his “Birthright” version. That particular overprotective fanboy nonsense, I don’t care for.

[details=Spoiler]His face did look kind of different, but I attributed that to the effects of the gravity humping machine.

If you saw Christopher Reeve, we can attribute that to the fact that all these actors look alike because they all look like Superman.[/details]

Seeing Faora fighting and how she carried herself makes me want a Wonder Woman movie so damn bad.

Its a dumb mentality to have if that is what they were going for. Its like they didn’t want to take a gamble. Personally they succeeded in the fact that Man of Steel ISN’T Superman Returns.

I’m still trying to get over the fact that Superman Returns has a 75% rating on RT. Didn’t Sups have like a page of dialogue max?

He didn’t have much dialogue in this one either. The two movies combined probably have less Superman lines than the 1978 movie.

Really, if you want Superman as an actual character, that’s the movie you’re looking for. If you want a guy who’s sad, go for Returns. If you want a guy who punches various nouns, go for this one.

If you want drunk Superman, go for Superman III. It doesn’t have much else going for it.

Why can’t we just get a fusion of reeves superman and this one then…it’s basically what all star superman was.

I purposely didn’t look at the rest of the thread due to spoilers, but what’s the overall verdict on this movie?

Routh has the right qualities, but for my money, he did come across as inexperienced. He was a soap actor. Reeve had done a soap, but he was also a Julliard-trained stage actor who’d been on the receiving end of John Houseman’s instruction… which, for an actor, is walking through fire.

And Cavill brings with him a resume of smaller, character-driven roles.

So…stone age earth.

Spoiler

18,000 years ago. Who left that ship?

His characterization is suppose to come through with his adult interactions. Your informed about his upbringing and his values progressively by his reaction to people and situations. We don’t need a "year one"story to convey the idea that supes is a farm boy with small town principles…we can get that in a 5 min convo with louis or lex.

They got the the two guys that put Batman back on the map in Nolan and Goyer. Thats confidence right there to want to do more beyond just Superman.

Spoiler

Kara Zor-El, read the prequel comic.

<insert Ancient Aliens meme guy here>

Oh yeah there was both a polar bear AND a giant spider in this movie. This will make me giggle stupidly for a long while.
