Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

The game is easy though, it’s pretty casual. That doesn’t make it not fun. I have way more fun in this game, than Dark Souls & Demon’s Souls. I loved Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls I have to go back to it, it’s like work in that game.

When I get off work in the morning, I don’t even fuck with games, because I know that is an easy hour swallowed. I work 12 hours at nightshift, so I need every minute of sleep I get. I make up for it on my days off, marathon sessions.

the game is stuuuuupid easy. even on hard i’ve only died once(and that was because i wasn’t paying attention heh…)

so far all big baddies of quest lines are extremely anti-climatic. It’s a fun game just would be nice to have a bit of a challenge…

Yeah, one of the the biggest examples to me so far has been the Widow and Bloody Bones. Expected much more out of those in the boss fights and story choices.

holy crap man… after stacking some +__ exp bonus things I just got 18,000+ off one boss troll kill… it was Gnarsh…let’s see:
+11% exp bonus on the robes I crafted… I named them “Lazarus Robes”
+2% bonus for Reckoning Mode, which I made sure to use when she was nearly dead, of course
+15% for the Greater Experience Booster potion I took, also done just shortly before I killed her.

Heh, that was crazy… it could’ve been even more if I used that rare hammer I got that also gives exp… it was a 5% exp bonus if I recall. Sheeeit, that leveled me up to 25 + a third of the way to 26 already! So, “Chojin” is now a Paragon.

I just spoke with that giant tree as well… Nyralim… the graphics in that area were gorgeous. So colorful… it was like some good artwork in a fairy tale book, or someone’s vividly colorful dream.

damn…that was another 6 hours straight there…level 26 now.

…that great-sword special move you can get from a dodge is SO GOOD™ (off the dodge/teleport, you jump into the air and land with a downward stab that also has an area effect)… I already have 3 points on it to get bonus fate energy each time that hits something. I just recently got points in “Battle Frenzy” ability as well…sheeeeit. My character is so wonderfully ridiculous at this point… heh, nice.

heh, I had to steal this little post from another board:

Sounds like SUCH fun, right?

Damn just hit the level cap, I hope the DLC thats coming on March 20th ups the cap.

level 27… I’m loving the Scholia Arcana part so far…almost sad to see it coming to an end (*Chojin just attained the rank of “Savant”, and it looks like the final showdown is about to take place in that story…)

Chakrams are so damn good… it’s like they’re in their own special god-tier out of all the weapon-types… great range, speed AND reasonable power…the ones I’m using now have 53 physical damage + 30-something Fire damage, 63 Burning, etc. etc. etc…made thru blacksmithing of course. Just the regular combo and that charged version where they hit all around you is already some incredible shit that the enemies can’t really deal with…then you add in the dodge or teleport to keep yourself from being hit while the monsters get sliced up to hell…haha, too crazy… they can’t handle it.

So far, I still don’t think the easiness ruins the game… the only area where I’m so overpowered it’s not really fun anymore are the old areas where you start out in the game, and this should be an understandable thing… naturally, the enemies names in those beginner areas are all in white text now, and I kill them in one or two hits. I’m still getting yellow to orange-text named enemies in other areas that are “new” to me, so I’m still having insane amounts of fun here… I’m at about 70 hours in on this game now, level 27, about to hit 28 most likely with this final event going on with Scholia Arcana.

Oh, I just got a “twist of fate” card that gave me +1 to all acquired Sorcery abilities… I notice this effect goes beyond the normal limit, so my Faer Gorta now has a 100% chance to transfer health to me whenever he hits enemies! Haha, nice. My little minion puts in good work whenever he is summoned.

…sheeit, I might see about making “He-Man” as a character later… pure Might, of course… I hate that we can’t change the body type though, as you know a proper He-Man character needs to look like he eats and drinks steroids for breakfast, lunch and dinner…I really want the option to change the colors on clothing and armors too…just a bit more customization…

some DLC info http://reckoning.amalur.com/en/r/dlc/dead-kel

well i beat the game and got all the achievements while running a magic-agility build

poison blink is great

I love how some folks on other boards drone on and on about the lack of difficulty, when they’ve made sure to exploit the unholy hell out of everything they could to make the character as godlike as it can possibly be… plus all the wannabe critics who are quick to yell “easiest game ever, lol” seem to have forgotten about Fable 2 and how you literally CANNOT DIE. Here, it is at least possible to die if you’re not careful and think for a second about avoiding damage or taking a potion when fighting the stronger enemies. (*one recent example… fighting in the Valor Arena recently; I definitely would’ve been destroyed on a few occasions if it weren’t for the potions saving me…you’ll fight enemies that can kill you or get close to it in about 1 quick combo…then again this is still dependent on how you’ve built up your character… my character “Chojin” is still a Might/Sorcery type with even distribution of points.) I dunno, the obnoxiously vocal “too easy too easy too easy” guys out there are even more annoying to me than the usual “I’m too good for this game” critics. No one wants to admit they enjoy anything these days, not even a little bit…and things are blown so far out of proportion it’s ridiculous… like someone seeing a spec of dirt on the screen of a new PSVita and instantly concluding it’s the worst portable system ever created.

I’m still having fun with the game, despite it not being “in style” to admit such a thing… my main character is 28, I think…2nd character is still a fresh 6 or 7… I may go on to finish the main story before coming back to that 2nd character. The “finale” of the Scholia Arcana faction was awesome. I am not sure what’s next for the “Chojin”…may track down a few trainers for skill-points in Detect Hidden and Alchemy… oh yeah, and I still have quite a few purple-named items to sell off.

*It would be nice to have a bit more weapon variety though… like axes, spears, chain/whips, etc. I figure there’s a possibility they set those aside for future DLC, perhaps? You can see several NPCs walking around with spears…giant axes could easily be assigned the same animation/moves as the hammers.

Sheeeeit… 24,000 exp off ONE fight earlier today…it was in the Valor arena. I also got my first prismiere greatsword…it looks so incredibly badass…and it’s doing insane damage…the new “Ryujin Jakka”–> 142 physical, 33 piercing, +21% damage +5% damage at Night + 30 Fire +20 Burning over 7 seconds… Chojin is now level 31, and headed off to the championship match in House of Valor…

One thing I’ll say is pushing things way too far in the “easy difficulty” situation… I just recently discovered that there’s a “fate potion”. Man, talk about cheap shit… that’s probably worse than that invincibility potion. They might as well have put in a potion that instantly beats the entire game…shit is hilarious, man. I’ll avoid the fate potions, because that’s just too much.

Just picked up the Strategy Guide from Future Press, that is a nice 600 page novel that is very well done. Did get it after beating the game, now just going around looking for all the lorestones for the little bonuses that the full set gives, looking forward to the DLC on the 20th

man… weapons and equipment really make a difference. When my character was jailed recently and broke out of there… it took forever just to slightly hurt the guards that were trying to stop me. I had no armor, accessories or weapons since I was fresh out of jail, of course…heh, it was funny… the Chojin was reduced to another prisoner in ragged clothes, trying to punch out guards and avoid attacks since ONE combo brought the life bar to nothing. I imagine the pure Might characters might have more of a rough time in that situation, unless you still have the Quake ability, I guess… at least I still had my magic spells and teleporting. It was satisfying when I finally killed one of those guys (evading the others…there were at least 6 or 7 guards after me) and got all my equipment back. Of course I had to stay away from that town for a few days while the heat died down. Wouldn’t it be funny if there were a game like this where that shit was permanent? Say you kill one of the villagers, and much like real life there’s NO statute of limitations on it… you would be forever classified as a dangerous outlaw to the people of that town. That might be interesting. I think most developers like to stay away from situations like that where you are permanently locked out of quests and other things like that. The “2nd chance” in this game is that you just wait a few in-game days, and all is…perhaps unfortunately…forgotten. Anyway, my Mark of Flame spell was the only thing doing any real damage to them.

level 32 now, just got to Mel Senshir, whatever that eastern city area is… the battle scene and the giant boss I had to fight… (hear that, producers of Fable? Actual boss battles! Thrills! Chills! Adventure! In your face, Lionhead Studios… c’mon and get on their level and respond to the challenge…competition breeds excellence and the audience wins!) that was awesome, fun stuff…with huge experience points to get…delicious exp, yes yes. I have the lightning storm spell now, along with that upgrade that gives Faer Gorta more hits in his attack chain + a chance to critical hit.

*I’ll have to take points out of Adrenaline Surge next time I “re-spec”… that shit seems to be pointless to me so far, because if the character has been hit down to 25% or less health, chances are you’re going to die before or right as that ability activates (since you’re likely in the middle of being hit with a combo, so the next hit is less than 1 second away from happening)…and it’s a very short period of time even when active.

This game has gotten a lot better. I’m at level 21 right now mostly doing a Rogue with Daggers type character.

I never use the Greatswords or Hammers cuz they’re too damn slow. Are they useful at all?

Also, what the hell is up with these random papers/documents that you can’t read? Do they serve any purpose whatsoever other than taking up a spot in my inventory?

Greatsword is the shit. I usually use it and a fast weapon to offset it. Hammer, not so much, except pure damage in Reckoning mode. Greatsword sweeps and does great damage. Also you can cancel attacks into a block, so most of the time your lack of speed wont be too much an issue. You can get some good juggles with almost every other weapon if you have harpoon.

Debating picking this up.
What’s the consensus?

I finished it and traded it in today. I logged about 75 hours total in my playthru (damn near every side quest and all factions save a couple quest hubs since I was already at the cap). Got to level 40 in single playthru.

Some things to note:
Play it on HARD (which is still moderately difficult at best) and tone it down if you actually find the combat tough.

Blacksmithing to level 10 + Sagecrafting to level 8 = better gear than ANYTHING you’ll find, epics / complete armor sets <<<< crafted greens. I finished the game using a rogue armor set from questing and crafted daggers / bow and it was comically easy. Once I finished the main quest and was able to go around doing whatever I skipped I finally made my armor set and my Armor rating almost tripled and my mana pool / hit points more than doubled. If I’d been using that gear the whole time (available early due to crafting), I’d feel like you could put a autistic drunk kid in front of the xbox and have them roll through the game.

It’s a fun game, MUCH more action oriented than I expected. I really got annoyed with how you can’t walk over a log or a rock on the ground, yet your character can jump down 40+ feet (if you find a plank to walk down).

7.5/10. Nice first try from 38 studios, but it just felt like a alpha for a MMO more than anything (which isn’t a bad thing I guess, but I couldn’t shake that feeling from start to finish)

If you like the concept of an RPG that focuses much more on real-time action/combat…that’s the thing that hooked my interest. I absolutely cannot stand how combat has usually sucked in most RPGs… the old turn-based stuff… I just can’t tolerate that shit. This brings over exactly what I wanted. The Fable games were a start, and this steps things up quite a bit, imo. (*it still isn’t quite as deep and varied as something like Bayonetta, but then again… it’s almost not even fair to compare most games to that… it’s still great fun to me, and exactly what I was expecting from all the preview videos.)

*Greatsword is my favorite weapon for close, non-magic oriented combat. A greatsword can be quite powerful, but it isn’t too slow like those hammers. It has a great charge-up move (the “whirlwind swing” followed by upward slashes), a great STRONG hit from block (a downward slash, flip + 2nd downward slash)…it’s so much fun. My main character is currently using a greatsword (the new “RYUJIN JAKKA”, made with a prismere base component…this thing does so much more damage than my previous swords it’s just insane.) and Chakrams, which I’d say are the absolute top-tier weapon type in the game… incredible range, speed and reasonably good damage… Chakram weapons are the total package.

*yeah, I’d agree that Sagecrafting is fine left at rank 8…that level gets you the ability to craft epic gems, so that’s really as far as it needs to be leveled. Blacksmith 10 is the shit since you get an extra little bonus on created weapons/armors/clothes just for having it at that level…that’s probably the first thing anyone should max out if they care about making the weapons at all.

*Bonuses can stack up so much… I love it… my character has +16% bonus exp all the time now, thanks to the Twist of Fate card bonuses, the crafted mage robes, the boots he has on(not created though; just got them from some quest…they give + 5% exp and happen to look cool) and a crafted Talisman shield that just recently replaced the House of Ballads shield I was using previously…oh and there’s even more bonus exp to be had whenever I hit Reckoning mode and kill things…

Meh i’m not to particual one way or the other as long as it’s not a gimmick for every attack ala lost odyssey.
What i am super burned out on right now is the “NewRPG’s” where everything is fucking sidequest and the story is 100% throw away.
I play RPG’s like a sweet ass choose you’re own adventure book.
I’m very much a old school rpg fan and love a well executed turn based or real time system.
I’m not a big fan of first person perspective rpg’s anymore though.

ooh, I see someone started posting a few combo vids already:

ah, better stuff here:

So I got the game. I’m barely into it, but I’m enjoying it so far.

I like the adventuring. And rpg elements and whatnot.

I enjoy challenging games, but the difficulty (or supposed lack thereof) doesn’t bother me too much, so far. Trying to walk a tight rope between seeing all the cool stuff the game has to offer, and not making my character into an unstoppable god tier killing machine. Of course, it’s an rpg, so if it comes to that I could always just take off my clothes and fight monsters in my underpants.

That being said, I like the combat. At first it seemed kinda meh during the tutorial, just slash-block-dodge-slash kinda stuff. but as I unlocked more abilities and techniques, the variety eclipsed that. Still, I kinda wish it was just a little bit deeper. I feel like just a few little tweaks and additions (a bit more emphasis on positioning, enemies that block/dodge more and can break your guard) could make the game almost perfect in regards to combat. Unless, those things start appearing later on. In which case amazing.

I played a bit of my other character tonight… now level 9 there, “Arcanist” (Finesse/Sorcery). “Duukijin” is already starting off as quite an evil, despicable son of a bitch. Haha, I’ve already slaughtered an entire town at the request of “The Widow”…the bitch didn’t even give me much for it. 1460 gold and some Faeblades? I tried killing the bitch right there, but the game surprisingly wouldn’t let me do that.
