What would you guys compare the combat in this game to? Specifically, compare it to other hack and slash action RPG’s or pure action games, if you can.
God of War with 3D camera, Phantasy Star Online without lock on. There is a demo, check it out.
Loving the combat so far, chaining Kniock up, hitting them a few times with my Chakrams, cancelling to Harpoon, knocking them up again, and ending with Earthquake is baller.
Sheeeit, I’ve been playing basically all day yesterday and most of today…Chojin is level 13 and close to 14 now. Creating weapons is such fun… I made a flaming greatsword and named it “RYUJIN JAKKA” (http://bleach.wikia.com/wiki/Ryūjin_Jakka_(spirit) ), and it is awesome… I made a hammer called “DESPAIR” which does 106 points of physical damage… beautiful… I made a scepter that’s lightning element called “SIGH OF A GOD”…a reference only old (modern)Phantasy Star fans would get… I could go on and on all day with this shit.
I have the “Summon Faer Gorta” ability now, and he’s leveled up a couple of times already.(*or rather… I put a few point upgrades into him… “Gort” doesn’t level up on his own.)
the quest— “Unlucky Charm”— so this guy gave me a cursed amulet or somethin’… now I have THREE curses on me at the moment… of course I went ahead and killed him after taking the amulet. Haha, he didn’t have time to call for help… we were in a far off, remote area anyway…no witnesses.
heh, finished that quest… on to another one where I had to steal a certain potion from my current crew, the Warsworn… unfortunately someone saw me stealing it, and I fast-traveled out of there as soon as I got outside. Heh, once I gave that guy the potion he wanted… I went ahead and killed him after he rewarded me with the experience and whatever other shit he gave me…haha, there’s something so great about that… right after I get what I want out of these foolish mortals… I kill them. On the other hand, I did a random good deed by reuniting a certain couple…perhaps next time I’ll get them on the path to reuniting, only to kill the bitch before he arrives…yeah, that will be a good one.
Just started playing this today for the 360. Put about 2 and half hrs into it, not bad but not loving it yet. Need to give it some more time.
I just got to the first town, explored it, and got some side quests to do.
Two questions:
-
The “loot” chests/drawers/etc. that are written in red I’m assuming you don’t wanna loot because the guards will attack you or something. I haven’t done it yet, what happens if you do and get caught?
-
What are you guys doing with old pieces of armor/weapons? Selling them or salvaging them? I’m about to start some quests and my bag is already getting pretty full.
-
If they appear in red that means you are stealing. There is a percentage along with the item on how likely it is you will get away with it. If you get away with it nothing happens. If you get caught it just depends on where you are. In some towns and major cities, they will either fine you, you can go to jail, or you can fight them. Some villagers will just try to attack you, you can either fight them or run away. If you run they forget after awhile and you can go back without any problems. That is how I did some of the Travelers quests.

I salvaged everything except Rare and Gold items. Even when you max out your Blacksmith you still can not salvage those. After you get high enough I would just sell all the white weapons you get as they do not give you good enough parts after you salvage them.
Oddly enough, 70 spaces fills up quickly considering how much stuff there is to find and loot in this game…there’s a backpack item you can get that gives the character room to carry 10 more things, but I haven’t bought one of those. I know it’s a waste but I’ve destroyed some items just to clear up space sometimes when I don’t feel like going back to a town to sell something or salvage it… now I salvage everything, basically. With blacksmith and sagecraft skills leveled up high, you can make weapons/equipment that is way better than the stuff you can find or buy from merchants. I recently reset my characters skill points just so I could put more into those skills along with “detect hidden” and “dispelling”.
My character has been caught stealing items once or twice…nothing major really happens with that, unfortunately… usually some guards run over to confront you about it, and you can either go to jail or try to bribe them…the persuasion skill decreases the amount you’d pay out when bribing the guards. Oh and speaking of the jail… I was in one of those areas and didn’t really notice, as silly as that sounds… I picked the lock on the huge door to get in, and surprisingly the guards didn’t have a problem with that. While in there, I saw a lever and decided to pull that…bam the doors go up and some prisoners run off, trying to escape. The guards killed them though. The funny thing is that they STILL didn’t confront me about that for some reason… I looted some gold/items off the dead bodies of those prisoners and casually walked back out of the jail.
Eh, it’s not like any ordinary human authority figures could really do anything to “The Fateless One” though. This character is basically a god and nearly unbeatable…and I’m loving every minute of it. I hit level 16 early this morning and am now in the “Crusader” destiny.
Every day, this game is all I want to play…if I had today off I’d seriously spend this entire day playing Amalur. My character “Chojin” is level 18 now, still a “Crusader”(No Remorse!)… there’s quite a bit of exp to be had as you continue to explore towards the east. I’m currently in the Warsworn faction.
Chojin’s Blacksmith skill up to 8 now, into the “Master” category of skills! Heh, I regret not killing that bitch in the church though…she had a nasty little tone since I freed a certain prisoner that she was keeping a secret from the rest of the town.
It definitely depends, I stole from the Warsworns, or whatever the name of that first faction is. The red alert went off, so I stood there so they could arrest me so I can continue. The guard started to attack me, so I defended myself and got an assault charge, then murder. I was a little pissed it went that way, so I just killed the whole faction inside and out.“Quest Failed” because I had some quest to do for them. Two of them actually after you kill them, they glow on the ground, and then after about 30 seconds the reanimate and keep attacking you. I went on my way questing and left them, I came back much later, maybe 5 game days and all was forgotten.
Will there be something in the game that lets me unload all my stuff? I have about 50 of my inventory slots being taken up my potions and crap. I don’t wanna sell them, but don’t wanna carry them around either.
Yes, you do find a pad of your own with a Stash chest to dump your shit. Maybe there are more pads but I have only found one. It was the same for me. I always had about 52 or 53 items on me after selling and dumping whatever I could. If you move the cursor over town icons on the map it tells you what is available in the town (blacksmith, stash, fateweaver, alchemy, etc. etc.). So find the town with a stash and head there.
I had to do some quest in order to get the pad.
I got to get back in this game, been too with work. I guess I will do a marathon session Saturday.
I had to stop for a Mass Effect 1 and 2 play. I’ll start back on Amalur after I beat 2 again, and play that until ME3 is out. Beat that, then edit some saves, beat it with other outcomes. If I havent beat Amalur then, finish that, then back to Skyrim, which I stopped when Amalur came out. heesh!
I’ll be honest, I was sold the minute one of my favorite fantasy authors (R.A. Salvatore) decided to write for the lore of this world. I mean literally this game could have been complete garbage and I still would have run around like a wanna be Drizzt Do Urden killing everything and going OMG THIS IS THE BEST GAME EVAR…
But it IS really good, it’s clear Salvatore at no point phoned this story in, the game play is SURPRISINGLY good, I do like the colors and the color pallet, its bright and varied and its easy on the eyes… I haven’t delved in as much as I would like, but I’ll definitely be getting into this in more detail after I finish ME3.
Hell yeah… “Chojin” was just promoted to Oathblade rank with the Warsworn crew! All those chumps out there need better respect the rank…whoahhh and I just got “Seeker’s Plate” chest armor! It has the blue cape with gold trim with a spiked shoulder plate on the left side, just like a proper high rank Warsworn wears!
I just hit level 20 with this character a little while ago… a bit over 50 hours in, so far, also maxed out the Blacksmith skill… I should’ve held off from creating my new longsword “Divine Contract” until I leveled up… it was created just before, but it’s nice so far… 70 physical damage with 25 piercing, +9% critical with physical, +10% damage, 30 Fire, 20 Burning over 7 seconds…this is such a bad-ass sword here. Longswords may ultimately be better, considering they’re naturally faster than a great-sword.
*It’s a shame you can’t salvage most purples… I hear there are some that can be salvaged but that was probably an oversight in the development. There’s a hammer I have that gets a +5% bonus, and I’d love to salvage that out of there to put on a new longsword.
If you truly want to make awesome items then make a beeline for a city you are supposed to go to later on. I went to rithin or rathir (i get it mixed up the big city in the east) early in the game because I was tired of salvaging garbage basic/crude parts. The merchants there sell greater parts, which I think is second to only master and I’m pretty sure their inventory is set and has nothing to do with your level. I didn’t even fight most of the enemies on my way, just ran to the city bought stuff, made new gear and went back to the quests I was on.
I’m level 29 now, and I’m working my way into the southern area of the map, detyr I believe it’s called. Feel like I’m probably 70% done with things, not sure how much time I’ve put in but I would guess 40 hours. Loving the rings I’ve gotten from the scholia archana, if you are a mage I suggest heading to ysa and getting started on that storyline. Fun game!
The more I play this, the less I like it. The combat feels stale and boring. I pretty much end up doing the same thing every fight. Shoot lightning magic at enemy, waste arrows, roll in for close dagger attack, repeat. The inventory limit really killed it for me. I must have gone over 400 items/weapons I couldn’t pick up because I was loaded with bullshit. I finally got to my house where I can store stuff…10 hours later. I really want to like it and get into it, but just can’t seem to.
It seems to me that most rpg’s have some sort of inventory management system. This one isn’t that bad, I mean the most things I’ve ever felt like I needed to carry around was like 40. Just sell everything else or salvage it. You can even destroy something if you find something you want to carry instead. Of course I bought all the backpacks I could find asap. Combat can get a bit repetitive but it gives you several options so switch it up. Still leagues better than most rpgs combat. (coughskyrimcough)
So far I have found 2 backpacks to buy.
I couldn’t stop playing… once again I will be a zombie at work tomorrow thanks to this game… I should’ve been asleep several hours ago. Anyway, I just finished my 2nd faction storyline… folks that complain about the game being “too easy” need to check out the final battle from House of Ballads. That was quite rough, but I eventually made it through… in about one more level up I could attain “Paragon” status, the next step up for the “Might/Sorcery” combo.
