I’ve never had a button issue at Power Play. Never. That’s at least one good thing there.
And like I said for the sticks, they can swap them out pretty quickly. The only thing about sticks, as everyone knows, is that no two people like them the same way. The power play sticks seem to always work, but some one won’t like the looseness, or tightness, or tallness, or shortness, or spacing, or color, or time of day, or … you get the point… and will thus cause things to not work the way said individual wants. But the sticks do indeed work exactly like they are supposed to.
There is an arcade on Shawnee Mission Parkway and Pflumm (accessible via I-35 North) that has Marvel in it. We used to have a #R cab, but the game tech fucked that up. I think Adrian and Chaz would come out and give you a good fight in that game if you ask nicely, but for the rest of us (ok maybe just myself here), it’s kind of hard going out the way to go there, knowing all they have is Marvel.
Nova- I’d like to say my place, but it’s a hard sell since I live on the MO side of things (435 and Holmes to be exact), and because my TV screen is a puny 32". I do have a few guys close to me that are usually down for some 3S. Best bet for them coming out is a Sunday night though, since they always party on Fri and Saturday nights. I also want to get some Alpha going.
Where are you coming from? It’s a longshot but you’re not going through Missouri, are you? Columbia, MO is two hours from Kansas City and we have an arcade with a decent amount of 3S and GG comp we can probably get together if we know you’re coming ahead of time. PM if you’re interested.
Hey, I’m from KC and although I’m not much of a player, I’m always looking for good players to test my skills against! Where are the common places where good players convene for 3s, GG, etc.? I’m dying to meet some serious competiton! Addresses, etc. would be nice! Any particularly busy arcade is sufficient!
Since the arcades around here don’t cater to competitive gamers (hell, they even pissed off the DDR kids from what I’ve heard), your best bet is to attend the occasional 3S getogethers at my apartment, or Late Night with Trebor Wiley (unofficial title for gamenights at his place), which focuses more on Slash and whatever games we can ninja in. Hopefully some of the other guys can pop back in and give you more insight into what goes on when people actually get together to play.
What character(s) do you use in 3S and GG?
EDIT: I think a FAQ is in order for the first post of this thread…
Hey people what’s going on yo!!!..so when we getting together for some gaming…I"m on vacation this whole month now…I play everything so i don’t care what u put in front of me…anyway let me know what’s up…I actually wouldn’t mind going somewhere new…like Columbia i guess…seems they got some ppl there that want to play or want some comp…I’ll tell u now I’m from the east coast…Probably best comp i can give u is some good Ol CvS2, Alpha 3 and SSFII turbo… other than those I’m ok on everything else…well hit me up yo…
Why’s the arcade scene so adversarial toward serious players? Pissed off the DDR kids? Seems like they’re sneezing at good money, if you ask me.
Anyway, I’m a shoto fan, myself. My buddy plays Ryu, I use Ken mostly, and am trying to improve with Akuma and Makoto. I’m not great, but I’m hoping some competition will change that in time.
As for GG, I’ve only played once, so I don’t even have a character. Just testing the waters of a different series. Mostly trying to see what kind of a fanbase is out there for what games in the KC area. Not a fan of the KoF series, very much.
Arcades make more money from the casual crowd. Most people want something they can just pop a quarter in, grab a stick (maybe a button or two) and play.
Fighting games require a little bit more of a learning curve, and when casual players hop on something like Marvel and pick Spidey/Venom/Wolverine and get OCV’d by Cable or Blackheart, they swear off the game for eternity and go back to playing shuffleball or air hockey. It’s the motivation to learn, to get better, and to hopefully someday beast on that guy that raped you that brings guys like us back for more. Unfortunately, most people come for mindless entertainment, not to be challenged.
Oh, and I play Elena, shotos, and the occasional Chun. Faust is my guy in GG, although I mess around various other characters.
Being a former DDR kid, yeah, PP pissed off the DDR kids, since their prices were absolutely absurd and they didn’t take care of their machines, but that seems to be a common problem around the building.
I’ve been getting into 2d’s a lot more lately, since the Tekken cab is like half an hour away and I don’t feel like driving. GGXXS and KoF XI are eating my soul right now, and even if you don’t like KoF games, give XI a chance. It’s a lot different and really really good.
