For me, it’s easier to hit confirm with 3 cr.lks.
I need 2 attacks to hitconfirm. I can do cr.lk x2 if I did a crossup or dive kick before.
Well, I was bored today, and since the PC version finally got the 2012 update, I decided to do some experimenting with Yang’s j.mk cross-up, or what’s left of it. So I went to training mode, and went through the 39 characters to see who the cross-up would work on and who it wouldn’t. Basically, I push the dummy into the corner, and when they’re in the corner, do HP rekkas, and hold up-forward to jump at the soonest possible frame and then do the cross-up. The dummy opponent was set to no block and stand.
Anyways, this is what I discovered, though it may be old news for some of the Yang veterans here. The cross-up, if done like what I did above, works on the following characters;
Cammy
Dudley
E.Honda
El Fuerte
Fei Long
Gen
Gouken
Guy
Hakan
Juri
M.Bison
Makoto
Rufus
Sagat
Seth
T. Hawk
Zangief
The cross-up also works on Sakura, but for her you have to basically delay the j.mk until the last possible moment or else it won’t work. Everyone else on that list the cross-up can be done pretty easily.
I did discover something else though. When I was testing the cross-up on Adon, I accidentally did MK Roll after I pushed him into the corner. I then figured, hey, why not try the cross-up? So I help up forward to jump as soon as possible, and did j.mk…and it connected. But when I tried doing it with HP rekkas, the cross-up would not connect no matter how I timed the j.mk.
Anyone else have any cross-up set-ups that they would like me to test? I have plenty of spare time on my hands.
Mk roll midscreen. Also, is there anyone we can still cross up crouching? Can any setups reliably use wakeup fuzzy guard to get around this?
Okay, MK roll midscreen it is. I’ll also test the HP rekkas corner cross-up setup with characters crouching. I think that if the opponent is crouching, the cross-up actually works better (at least in the corner), since I think that it widens their hurtbox or something like that. At least, I wasn’t able to get the cross-up after HP rekkas in the corner to work while Ryu was standing, but it worked when he was crouching. Actually, you can do the cross-up even without the rekkas in the corner if Ryu is crouching.
Also, I just discovered something pretty interesting. If Ryu is in the corner, and you end a rekka string with LP Rekka, and you do the cross-up, the cross-up will hit Ryu if he is crouching and he will go into the standing hit animation. So looks like I’m going to have to test the cross-up in the corner with LP and MP rekkas now… I’m sensing lots of lab time ahead of me.
Also, after playing around with resets and things to do after FADC-ing a 2nd rekka, I noticed that if you cancel the 2nd rekka with a Focus attack, instead of immediately dash cancelling it you can do the Focus attack itself, and you have just enough time to release the focus attack and combo it, and put your opponent into a crumple state. Now I’m trying to figure out what we can do off of it, and if it has any sort of advantage compared to doing a basic BnB off of a standard FADC. It doesn’t really do more damage than the standard Bnb’s, or at least not from what I tested (e.g. in the corner, dive-kick, cr.lp, st.lp, cr.mk xx 2x HP rekka, FADC, cl.mk, mp.palm, lk roll kick does 256 damage compared to 241 if you don’t dash cancel the focus attack. cr.mk xx 2x HP rekka xx FADC, cl.HP xx 3x HP rekkas does 269 damage, but if you don’t dash cancel the focus attack it does 272 damage), so I don’t think we should use it for combos. However, I come up with some possible uses for it;
- Combo into forward throw, which can lead into a cross-up setup on certain characters (Dash forward, jump, cross-up. Still have to test to see who this works on.)
- Easy combo into either Ultra. Though due to damage scaling, this is only really useful if you combo off of cr.mk into 2x HP rekkas xx EX focus attack. 394 damage with U1.
- Free palm.
- Reset. This is where I think that it truly shines, as you really have an advantage when your opponent is in a crumple state. There are several options for a reset, but I’ll go into the one which I think is the best one; cr.mk xx lk teleport. The real nasty thing about this is that you can basically pick which side you want to end up when your opponent lands. Since you recover from your teleport at basically the same time that your opponent does…
Oh, crud. I’m late to go somewhere. I’ll post the rest when I’m able to get online again.
Okay, I’m back online. Let’s get back to EX FA possibilities, namely resets.
You can do some pretty powerful resets off of a focus crumple (or at least powerful on paper), and the fact that you can combo into a focus crumple makes it even better. One of the main resets that I’ve been toying around with is cr.mk xx lk teleport. If you do the cr.mk when the opponent lands on their knees, as we all probably already know, the opponent is considered airborne. So the cr.mk will cause the opponent to pop into the air, and do a recovery flip, and they’re completely invulnerable until they land. Now here’s where it gets interesting. You can cancel the cr.mk into lk teleport, and you will recover from your teleport at the same time that your opponent recovers (I need some help testing to see if you are at a frame advantage or a frame disadvantage after you do the lk teleport though, but it appears that you recover at about the same frame that your opponent does, if not before), so you can either go for another hit confirm into another combo to go into another reset (if you have meter of course), or you can mix it up with a command grab, or a throw. Also, another interesting thing is that if you walk slightly backward, and then do cr.mk xx lk teleport, you will recover in front of your opponent, while if you don’t walk backwards (or just tap the joystick backwards), you will end up behind your opponent. Also, if you walk backwards slightly and do cr.lk xx lk teleport, you will always end up behind your opponent.
You can also use the focus crumple to do a mid-screen meaty palm set-up. Do cr.lk, but link the palm, not cancel it, and it should hit meaty.
I’m going to do some more testing to see if I can find any other “tech” with the focus crumple, now that I’ve found that we can combo into it. Anyone else have anything else they’d like me to test? Right now I need to check who the cross-up works on after LP and MP rekkas in the corner, both standing and crouching, check who the cross-up works on after a mid-screen MK roll, who the cross-up works on with the following set-up; forward throw, dash, jump, among other things.
Also, @IdesofMarch, I’m not exactly sure what you mean about setups in regards to fuzzy guard. Actually, I’m not exactly sure what fuzzy guard is. I’m kind of a scrub when it comes to that sort of “advanced” stuff.
2 Yangs in top 16 of the Norcal Regionals. I’m satisfied.
Haha yeah. I only saw one match from yang tho and i think it was from illiterate. Shit was mad funny, sorta “i heard you like resets so a put a reset in your reset so you can reset while you reset”.
Guess that means I should continue my lab work. Gotten through about half the cast testing cross-up set-ups. So far E. Honda seems to be the easiest to cross-up; it’s as if our cross-up wasn’t nerfed at all against him.
Also, the EX Focus attack combo/resets that I posted above…anyone think that it could be a useful tool? Or am I trying too hard to find a use for it?
Looks like there’s going to be an all Yang team at the 5v5 Topanga Charity Cup.
Nemo, Kyoku, Acqua, Ojisan Boy and someone else that I couldn’t translate. Should be interesting…
That’ll be very interesting. All my favorite Yang players teaming up.
666’s Yang on stream now. Holy crap against Dath’s C.Viper he whiffed a rekka after a blocked ex thunder knuckle then second rekka hit and he just reacted and did an fadc ultra to take the round. He had like 30 hp left at that point. Hype as hell.
Just discovered something interesting. If you do 3x HP rekkas, and EX Focus attack cancel the 3rd rekka, and hold it, if your opponent quick stands you’ll hit them with a meaty lv 3 focus attack. You can’t be thrown out of it, can’t be hit out of it (barring an invincible reversal of course). And if they don’t quick stand, even if you don’t react and dash cancel the focus attack, you’ll still recover before your opponent. I don’t think it gives you enough time to try for a cross-up or a meaty palm though, but I think you have enough time to do a meaty dive kick or a meaty command grab. Not 100% sure.
I think there are probably better uses for burning meter, but I figure at this point, any new tech is good tech.
Took a good break from sf. Back now.
Only Yang I saw at Shadoolow showdown was Humanbomb who used Yang for two matches against FC’s Dhalsim. He won the first match including a perfect but switched to Sakura when Champ won the second match.
thinking about seriously picking up yang. havent ever really touched him before
what are his worst match ups?
He goes even with most of the cast. Has a tough time with grapplers - Gief is 4-6, arguably 3-7. Hawk is 4-6. I would also say Honda, Fei and Adon are 4-6
And sakura. Sakura is a pain.
Actually, I don’t find Sakura all that bad really. Though that may be in part because I play Sakura myself and know about her resets and frame traps, and when to not press buttons.
I gotta say though, once you start pressuring her she seems to have a hard time dealing with it.
cl.hp xx lk tatsu kills any divekick pressure and resets the situation on block, unleashes the pain train on hit. Dive kick is mostly denied if you consider how amazing cr.hp, s.lp and cr.mp are against it as well.
If you do manage to get past her cr.mk (which outranges yours) and s.hk, yeah you can absolutely rock her with frame advantage. Like fei however, i find it really hard to get that pressure started.
To be honest, that might just be due to the competition i face, so i get biased opinions on sakura and a few other members of the cast. The matchups that I’d point as unforable without a doubt would be Zangief, T. Hawk, Honda and Sagat.
