Just Rolling With It: Yang General Discussion Thread

I guess. I just find it annoying when someone’s like “this character is easy mode and so strong” like the people playing them are only doing well because they play that character. I remember watching Noel Brown use Rufus and getting blown up. Wong, Marn, Floe, Ricky and Kindevu were already strong players at whatever they picked up before SF4 and Rufus.

>implying Yang isn’t top tier when he thrashes Gen and Hakan, has many of the same pressure options as Fei, plus goes even with and does as more damage than Fei overall. You can say Yang sucks as much as you want, man, but Yang is exceeding 3s Yun damage nowadays. The basic mixups are ruining people left and right, and Yang is hounding people to the corner, taking half their life just for not blocking low.

Yun does this just as well, but has worse matchups. Ergo, if Yun is top tier, Yang is as well.

What the fuck are you talking about?

Please show one half life yang combo.

You clearly know nothing about their matchups.

I’m sorry man but on every thread you’re very blindly arguing how amazing Yang is, but many things that you say really don’t hold up.

I mean you’re saying that Yang can pressure better than Fei?

You said that Rufus sucks because all he has is EX Messiah and Ultra?

Come on man.

I never said Yang pressures better than Fei, I said he has some similar options.

“Half life” was probably the wrong term to use - Seiei Enbu and Mantis Fadc ultra are doing pretty darn close.

I don’t believe I’m blindly arguing at all. I made those comments about Rufus because he was being put forward as an extremely scrubby character that should be played instead of Yang. The truth is he plays more like Yun than anything else.

How about, instead of you blindly saying Yang sucks, YOU start attempting to prove why. I won’t deny there are things to be criticised about him, but start explaning why Yang cannot be a top tier, and try to provide a reason not related to damage or short crouchng jab this time, because those reasons are completely bogus. You people want to say he’s not a top tier, but tiers are a general consensus of the community as a whole, and the consensus right now, despite what you or I think, is that Yang IS top tier, or darn close.

Gonna agree with Chef on this one… Yang ain’t THAT good lol (at least, not at the moment). But he’s strong enough to win so that’s all that matters. Also, damage output is a huge factor of how good a character is in comparison to others. That is one of Yang’s shortcomings (it takes a couple of more hits with Yang to win than say, Rufus). But who cares, he’s still very dangerous character.

Nah dude, this ain’t 3S or MvC or anythin lol. Half the cast in SSF4 can win tourneys (exaggerating a bit, but you know what I mean). Yang is definitely high tier imo… Not top tier by any means, but high tier nonetheless. The game just came out, give the character more time. He’s definitely viable.

is there like a general guide on what you’re supposed to be doing as yang? just played him for the 1st time but got assraped since i didn’t know what i’m supposed to be doing

Play footsie at mid range with cr.mk xx lp slash. His sweep is good too. While playing footsies, try to find the opportunity to dive kick in (either simply to get in and/or catch a poke your opponent throws out). Up close, pressure with jab block strings canceled into slashes. Maintain spacing, and keep the pressure going with the right normals/lp slashes and you’ll be good to go.

If you commit your opponent to blocking, go for unexpected command throws for free damage. cl.mp is a good frame trap off st.lp/cr.lp.

That’s Yang for you in a nutshell. Every other useful information is scattered around the boards in their rightful threads.

thanks!

RB ran with Guy and Rufus.

I’m just going to do what I planned to do in the beginning. Run with Guy Yang and Yun, and maybe Cody. Either way even if Yang isn’t truly Tourney viable, even though I’m finding that hard to believe from quite a few players and even if Yang doesn’t throw out Damage as say Yun does (as far as we know) He’s still a good character. So I’m just going to ignore what everyone says cause back in Vanilla, Gen sucked or so everyone thought but 3 players showed his potential. EVeryone thinks Guy sucks yet quite a few players show his potential and fight through his shortcomings. Rufus may have lost a few things that made him a serious threat, but he still has confirm into ultra that does about 500 damage always. Safe blockstrings and ways to pressure and chip the opponent down.

Yang isn’t about doing amazing damage. He won’t be doing any ToD combos anytime soon. However, he can consistently do 20%-30%.

Successfull mixups with Seiei Enbu can do ridiculous damage, and it’s not too hard to confirm into it (hell, it’s all right even if they block it, as you can see in one of the newer vids in the video thread).
Anyway, what makes Yang so good, from what I can see, is how well he can apply pressure and mixups. You can easily mess with your opponent’s head.
That, along with decent damage combos and big damage opportunities makes him a viable character in my opinion.

Now, if I could somehow play Yang without waiting half a year for a DLC…

His super seems to have that 3S ‘makoto factor’ of “guess twice and you win” though…hell, just doing f.MK->cr.MP seemed to do like 40% damage against yun…one reset and he took off like 500 life, without even finishing the combo with anything. if anyone finds a combo that involves palms…@_@

edit: also note he didn’t start hitting him untill half the super bar was done
also, here’s the video in case anyone hasn’t seen it

If anyone finds a combo with palms it will probably be for resets, like Nemo combo, cl mp, MP/HP Palm (could be possible for HP palm during Super), Depending on the pushback from teh MP palm Yang may be able to Sweep which could lead to wake pressure.

I should have mentioned outside of super. His combos are all very quick and solid, provide good horizonal movement, and give decent meter. However, outside of his super, these combos are only going to do about 20%-30%, which isn’t bad at all. Even that super combos is sort of meh because he ended up missing a link and reset it. I’m sure people will find out some crazy ass super combos for both of the twins, but I’d expect to see him played as a generally solid character that doesn’t have to rely on his super.

I’m pretty sure Yang’s Super will heavily be based on resets for high damage, His potential in it is scary, I honestly believe if its possible to do 2-3 reset combos in Seiei Enbu it will lead to a KO or Stun.

QFT. Yang is straight up solid.

wouldnt it be so awesome if KO or Roshihikari had came back to play Yang in SSFIVAE.OMG it would be so raw.
It will probably be like KO(Yang) vs Daigo(Yun) or KO(Yang) vs Roshihikari(Yang). now that would be a match so see:woot:

Pretty sure KO would use both Yang and Yun. I miss his Yun play.

Maybe I’ve been playing too much Chun, but I find his cr.mk too stubby for footsies. In my so far limited experiance, I’d recomend far.mk, fwd.mk & far.mp for footsies. cr.mk is more for pressure.

No other nitpicks:wgrin: I completely agree with the rest.

On an unrelated note, far.mk is a damn good anti-air. Not crazily fast, but fast enough, and a hitbox that seems to extend a good half a hand width above his actual leg.
