JAPAN THREAD 2011: Lets get it on!

Heyyy. I’m enrolled to be studying abroad in Tokyo (shinjuku) for a year starting september, and I’m very interested in hearing about what the scene there for marvel is like. Or just how the scene works there in general? Reading about some of the arcades, I see a lot of Marvel 2 machines, which is awesome, but no mvc3…is that going to change, or is the game not meant for arcades:(? Do players there organize a lot of meet ups like players in the states…? or are games played in arcades. Also, does anyone know of a Japanese equivilant of SRK where I can talk and join players?

???????

Theres only one place I know that has mvc3, in takadanobaba Mikado, but i havent really been there so cant say much.

I dont think there are that many japanese/ppl in japan who play marvel competitively, good luck finding a “scene”.

As for meetups, back when ae wasnt out yet, i went to a lot of offline gatherings/meetups… then theres events like godsgarden or tokyo game night where you play games all night long… but yeah, theres also arcade hopping where a group of people go from one arcade to another (did this with some friends during last golden week, pretty awesome)

AFAIK they dont have srk-like-forum, but they have bulletin boards and stuff(irc chat, mixi etc), oh and they tweet a lot too, so if youre on twitter and follow some of the players, you can get some info(obviously not restricted to game stuff).

its hard to explain everything, you just gotta get here first and experience it yourself. Go to the arcades, talk to people, make friends and things will expand from there.

ahhh, thanks for all this. It was very helpful. I’m kind of a little surprised to find that marvel has no competitive scene, they just prefer ssf or…? I’ve seen some very developed match vids from japanese players, and I see that a lot of japanese players are dominate in online leader boards (not that online play should be called competitive) but it still says something. Arcade hopping sounds very fun though. I’m looking foward to learning AE

There is a scene, the tournaments are just kind of few and far between. If/when they happen, they’ll be held at arcades so the best thing to do is check in at the arcades and pay attention to postings and stuff.

I don’t know Kanto as well but Kansai just had a Marvel tournament with big names at it. It filled up too!

Also, I’m sure many of us who live in Japan can speak Japanese. What did you need in regards to that? =p

my bad, didnt mean to make it sound like theres no scene at all… i dont play marvel so my knowledge of it is pretty limited…

it was probably a dumb question :p, it’s just generally a good thing. I’ve hung out with many people who study there with very little to no speaking skills, I’d rather be talking with people who can at lease speak the language haha. I’m going there in hopes to get better at speaking afterall. Didn’t know you guys were residents.

Hmm If Kansai has tournies I’m sure kanto would as well. Thanks for the info.

Hey so I’m looking for some people to meet up for some games in the Osaka, Naniwaku area. Ill be there in the beginning of June to visit my gf, but the thing is she works during the day, so I’ll have plenty of time to kill. I’m really a Marvel player (MVC1-3), so if anyone knows where I can play those, preferably 3 for now. I think the only arcade I went to last time I was there was one near Dontonbori and one near the Round 1 bowling. Let me know if you guys know of better ones or a better place to meet up.

Yo man, join my facebook group. I’ve got a gathering coming up on June 4th. I know it’s the same weekend as the Final Round 1st tournament but I can’t make it all the way out to Tokyo for that one D:

As a teacher (of both English and Japanese) I can tell you that going abroad and living in another culture can be one of the most frustrating yet rewarding experiences one can have in their life. However, it is CLEARLY what you make of it. Many people come here to study and end up just doing nothing but hitting the books and talking in English with their classmates and do not make any serious progression. You need to get out there and listen to people talking. If you’re 20 or older hit up a bar and make some friends! You don’t have to drink, just go and try to get to know some regulars. If you get into an arcade scene, hitting up tournaments, you’ll easily find people who will be nice and talk to you if you keep going and are a familiar face. It’s frustrating at first cause everyone might be likely scared to talk to you BUT, I’ve played competitive smash here, gone to PLENTY of other FG tournies and am a HUGE card game player (and have been to countless TCG events) and once you’re a familiar face, everyone wants to talk to ya! Just go out there and GANBARU!

Have a friend or two to speak to in English so you don’t overload your brain with Japanese (you WILL burn out), but make sure you don’t hide behind your books the whole time and get out there and EXPERIENCE the language. I mean, that’s why you’re coming right? If you wanted to continue studying Japanese from a book, you could have stayed home =p Go out there and experience it in use first hand!!

We’ll get along fine then^ ^. I completely agree with you, which is why I’m going. Even studying in the states, I’ve always made friends with the exchange students and speak to classmates who loves communicating in Japanese. What you said is very reassuring though. I’ve always wondered how playing a card game in another language is like…perhaps I’ll check it out too.
I’ve asked to join your group on fb~looking forward to meeting up with folks after september.

living in komagome, tokyo now. like, 3 exits from ikebukuro on the yamanote. anyone around?

Sup all, I’m living in Sawara-ku, Fukuoka now. I usually went to Monkey House and Tenjin GIGO, but Monkey House suddenly closed down, and so did Subculture, and there’s usually bad or not good comp in Tenjin GIGO. Anybody know of any places in Fukuoka, preferably close to Sawara-ku that I could get some good comp in 3S and maybe some SSF4? (GIGO has good comp, but not good enough, and no I’m not bragging, but I’m trying to get some serious competition.)

P.S., I am also looking for which websites/bbs/forums Japanese players go on to chat or some arcade locations pages in Japanese, thanks.

Hey I’m living in Chiba right now if anyone wants to hang in Tokyo and play some games or whatever. I’m trying to level up my game in a couple of different games right now so yeah. I love getting wasted and going clubbing too if that’s anyone’s thing.

Just got a job offer from Interac today, so I’ll be back in Japan in August or September!

Hafiz, even if I’m sent out to bumblefuck, I’ll be in Tokyo for the first week or so, so we should get together for some food and SF.

cool dawg, dont bail on me this time lol

Okay, Capt. Forgot-To-Take-His-Keys-Back. lol

Yo any players in the Osaka area? Im staying in Nanba right now with my girl, but she has work during the day so I need an arcade to play at, preferably MVC3.I remember there being a site on the first page of this thread documenting where the arcades are in Japan. Every time I try to access the first page, its crashing my browser for some reason. I vaguely remember an arcade near Hep 5, Ill be heading up there later today. Just reply to this thread if anyone is down to meet up the next few days or if you know where I can get my MVC3 fix for the next few days.

Hm, I’m in Okinawa for the foreseeable future. Any players on the island, or any PSN players from JPN? (Since Japanese players are the only ones I can have a halfway decent online game with.)

im back in action for the time being. open on sat nights in shibuya or ebisu…

what it do calibur?

So anyone get AE downloaded in Japan on psn? I seem to be locked out of the store now… Anyone resolve this?

I think the Japanese PSN store is still closed.

Or at least that’s what they’re saying on the main article.
