What’s up peeps, Imma be in Tokyo for a couple of weeks on Wednesday…mainly to shop, get some time in at the arcades (mainly lookin to play IV and GG), bum around and drink a bit/a lot at night. Any advice/help on getting around/where to go would be greatly appreciated.
What’s going on folks! I know this is the Japan thread but is anyone available to take a group trip to Korea in July? It’s cheaper than travelling in Japan and I wanna check the gamecenters and night life in Seoul. And if Calibur comes we will have nothing to worry about cause he can just Texan Jujitsu anybody up!
really cool actualy, you can ask people questions here with out hering some fat nerdy guy call you a newb. Hell, i even played against some Jr. Yakuza, resturaunt staff, and sometimes a hooker (hostess) on her break (no BS)
I started off as an Engineer, than waiter/bartender, then Head Hunter, now in finance doing investments and media type stuff.
Its been a rough path here in Japan, esecially since I didnt know Japanese and I was expected to do business in Japanese from day 1… but the girls are good.
I talked to some kid the other day and he went to Waseda. damn good college, easy to get in (from what I heard from the kid) and they drink alot. Sounds like a good college to me. That or if you got the money (like a lot) Keio, and there are a lot of pot heads there, plus if you graduate from Keio, you’ll get a job just because you went to Keio (the “escolator” school)
Ha, I wish.
Calibur does jujitsu? I did greco-roman/freestyle and judo… Dont meet that much people who play street fighter and do some type of fighting art…
What it do Calibur? do you train out in Jpn? I would love to go to a camp where I know they got some foreigners at. I am going to join P’s Lab Tokyo soon, my son just got into daycare so i can do some more of my personal stuff now. But if you at another camp, i might just go to the one you at so I can have a mat buddy…
I’m going to be visiting Japan in the Kanto region by the end of May, and I’d like to know what arcades I should try to visit aside from Club Sega (Shinjuku), Mikado (Shinjuku), and Nakano TRF (Nakano).
The Versus City wiki didn’t seem to be up to date, which is why I’m asking here.
What game/games do you want to play in the arcades? Do you want the hotspots for a particular game, or do you just want to go to the overall popular ones?
I personally don’t know too many in the kanto region, but I’m sure a bunch of other people could give better recommendations if you specify what is it you want to play.
Example, joybox is awesome for arcana heart and tekken, but it doesn’t have SFIV. If you don’t play AH or Tekken, and only play SFIV, then saying ‘check out joybox’ would be kinda pointless. However, if you didn’t play SFIV and only played Tekken, then joybox would be a good place to visit. You get the idea…^_^;
Hm, well, the games I’m interested are 2D fighters, shoot 'em ups, music games, and games that would be unique to Japan (Sangokushi Taisen, Gundam Cockpit, QMA, etc.).
Ok, then you’re looking for a good “has everything arcade”, so Club Sega in Shinjuku is good. There’s a bunch in Akihabara, Hey hey hey is really good. Shibuya Sportsland or whatever it’s called might be good too, since I hear that was hot for SFIV.
But yeah for music games or online games, you can pretty much go wherever there’s a decent sized arcade and you’ll be fine.
How hard would you say getting into a japanese college with a US Diploma would be? I’m assuming I’d have to take exams.
Do you mean a study abroad college for like, a year, or do you mean like, an actual japanese one, same as a normal japanese person?
Thanks for the info, HeartNana!
lol, my gf is a keio graduate student. she was having a tough time finding a job for next year simply because of the job market being so slim. she finally landed her dream job with dupont recently, but that was after a helluva lot of hectic interviews. it’s not that simple .
anyways, i wanted to ask you a question: i’m currently an english teacher (big surprise) through a sister-city program here and my contract is a 3 year maximum (i just started my 2nd year). i was going to ask what it’s like trying to find business jobs around tokyo being a gaijin.
i’ve been looking for jobs, particularly around the tokyo area, and i haven’t found anything outside of teaching. it’s really starting to seem like it will be impossible for me to find anything aside from that. do you have any suggestions? by the way, i have a double major in international business and marketing if that helps to narrow it down at all. i’d really like to work for a japanese company if it’s at all possible, because i really have no intention of leaving anytime soon.
at the moment my japanese is so-so at best, but i’ve been working really hard at it and it’s decent for only having been here for one year. i can understand a lot more than i can say still, but i’m slowly getting there.
any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.
Well, since you want to work at a “japanese” company, you need certifications to back you up. (extreem case senario)For example, I have a friend who is white, he speaks english and spanish cause he grew up in SoCal and had lots of Mexican friends. The interviewer asked if he was latin, he said no, so he needed a cert. to show that he knows Spanish. Does he need it? For that company apparently he did.
Moral of the story, get JLPT 2kyuu so you can stand at “entry” level.
I know that was extreem, but as a former head hunter, gaijin == no commission. No commission meaning foreigners are not wanted. If you can read and write at college level, you are half way there, but still off by far.Since you want a business job with your background you are talking Human Resources or admin work. In a Japanese company, you are gonna be fucked over by some college grad (girl most likely) who went to Aus, NZ, US, UK, or Singapore that can learn that type of work, is cheap, + Japanese. So you have to find a company where they have International and Japanese admin sections and deal only with international services. They way you can find that out is by the email addresses on their website ("client.sevices.japan@company.org" and "client.sevices.international@company.org") I work in a really small company and we have a foreigner for intl services and a jap girl for japan services. so bigger companies will have it.
How to find these companies? Easy but hard, google.com. DO NOT USE gaijin pot or any other job board because a lot of the jobs posted are companies who get 1000 emails a day and job descriptions from Head Hunters. I found my job off of google: “sales jobs in tokyo”. So now I am in Finance/Investments. Let you know, I have a BS in Electronic Engineering and Minored in Administration of Justice… nothing to do with finance at all. So dont let your degree stop you from exploring open jobs.
In my opinion (after all this shit i just wrote), the only jobs out there for mid-level japanese, non-japanese spouse, unexperianced/english teacher, is either (from most possible to least possible):
-english teaching
-waiting, bar, hosting
-tech support (alphanet is a good one to hit cause they just developed a “bilingual” department for gaishikei companies)
-hotel resturaunt staff
-admin/HR
-Head hunting/sales/finance
and yes this is coming from experience: working 2 jobs from 8am until 2am, living in a mildew infested apartment with my pregnant wife, then becoming a head hunter, moving into a nice home with our first son, then company goes bankrupt 3 months after I move and buy hella stuff, then to commision based job with no experiance what so ever in that field and having to pay for daycare and my alcohol habbit
any more specific questions, post or pm me. good times in Japland
Hi guys, I’m coming to Tokyo for a 6 day vacation in the middle of May. I’ve read through the versis wiki but I wanted to hear from you guys about any good arcades or any recommendations in general while I’m there.

Yo Reno, how about making the first post a lil more descriptive about questions and what not?

If you have a question, feel free to ask us, but first COMPLETELY read the first post and answer the following questions:
-
Where are you going to stay? (Tokyo is not an answer, it is just like saying New York City, L.A., London, or Hong Kong)
-
What games do you play?
-
If you are asking for budget approximations, please give detail about:
-The number of people you will be with
-Where you want to go
-How luxurious of a place you want to stay in
-What your spending needs are (ie. gifts for the family, everyday arcade, sightseeing, etc.)

I will write more if you are coo wid putting this in the first post.
Posting from the train:
I’m heading southbound for Bull410’s Sky Lounge Video Game Party.
If you wanna go, just come on down to Shinagawa (Tokyo)
ETA: 18:00
Im bringing the sticks for SFIV, but who wants sum of dat Virtual-On?!
sure, I’ll update the first post with this when I get home.
Yup. I’ve been on dat jiu jitsu for a long time. Judo and boxing to, but I suck at Judo and don’t like getting punched in the face anymore. I train out in Paraestra/Crosspoint in Kichijoji. Not many foreigners unfortunately.
I just realized out in Takadanobaba they have the Cosmic Sports Center which has open mat for 300 yen. Me and Genjiro were talking about going down their to roll around when his foot heals up.
If anyone is interested post up. Scott, you gotta get down with these fighting sports too man. In Texas it used to be an automatic chick pick up at MMA events. Now everyone says “I train UFC”:bluu: Lame ass niggas stealing my game.
so i’m mainly an at-home sf4 cat, but i don’t seem to pick up many 3-4 bar games in japan (and getting booted when i CAN get in a match is annoying).
this is just about ready to force me to switch over to which is the most popular platform for SF4. would it be xbox or psn? i use xbox.
360 is more popular for SFIV i think. I don’t have a problem getting 4-5 bar matches. Usually 4 bars, but i get a decent amount of 5 bars, too. I thikn it’s gotta be your connection or SOMETHING, because for me, online play works really well.
