Is KoF XII really that bad?

Who used Mai anyways? Can anyone name a good Mai player that wasn’t Ching Lung?

awaits possible correction

I never used Mai. :wonder:
I did find beating her up entertaining though.

I’m on the verge of going out and buying this game today. The scrubs complaining about fanservice and single player have me optimistic. Maybe instead of focusing on superfluous aesthetics, they actually tried to make a solid gameplay engine.

What do I mean by solid gameplay engine? Does that mean all characters play like your favorite iteration of them? No, it means the game doesn’t feel sloppy. It doesn’t feel like the moves do things they shouldn’t. It doesn’t feel like SvC Chaos for Christ’s sake. That’s what I’m looking for.

I don’t care about your characters or movelists. The game just has to be fun and competitive.

I think a lot o the complaints are valid, considering you are paying 60 bucks for the damn thing. I’m not knocking on mechanics or the fighting system btw, but as a product I do not feel the game is close to being worth 60$.

Take Chess video games for example. No one would question the basic rules, functions or strategies of said games, but one would expect extras to in tandem with a higher price tag. If extras didn’t matter then I would still be playing chessmaster on my genesis instead of chessmaster 2009. I mean, the rules and system of the game are no different, and all the extras and tutorials and ai improvements and boards and music doesn’t matter to a game that is meant for competitive play. BUT I’D BE SERIOUSLY PISSED if I had to spend 50$ for chessmaster on the genesis and that was the only version of chess I could get.

When KOF98UM comes with challenge mode, color editor, functional button mapping, bonus cd, a poster, the original KOF98 rom, and all the other stuff for 20 bucks, I can see why KOFXII is getting judged so harshly AS A PRODUCT.

Except 98um reuses assets they’ve had for over 10 years. Its not the same.

Fluff my ass, like I said, this is 2009, not 1998. You call having a tutorial for new players fluff? Challenge mode to teach the inner workings of your character fluff? Having them for ALL the characters is fluff?

You call making all the characters updated stylized 3d models fluff? Having more then five stages is fluff (three of the stages in this game are essentially the same damn thing)? Higher resolution characters is fluff? Good music is fluff?

Get the fuck out of here with that shit. Stop acting like the rest of the market is SRK, because it’s not. Great, the game plays fine, but there’s 85% left that feels empty. It’s your logic that makes the work that Capcom and Ark put into their games lose their value. Face it, if the netcode for this game doesn’t fare well in the next few weeks this game is going to lose popularity fast and just flat die out. If we want to extend ourselves outside of the SRK circle jerk we’re going to have to lend a hand to the people who were pleasantly welcomed by SF4 and BB, but as it stands KoFXII does little more then come into acceptance for say, a thousand people or so, when there’s hundreds thousands more to tap into.

Dark Geese uses EX Mai some. Arturo can also- but usually uses Athena instead.

That’s among US players.

As for the things missing, I never used any of them, so I don’t really value them. The only thing I feel that is missing from XII is one move from most of the chars.

Except that the engine is surrounded by the worst interface in fighting gaming, making it impossible to get into 2player action easily unless you’re both using default configs on xbox controllers. Which, in turn makes you what you previously said, a ‘scrub’.

No, it feels like KOF98LITEALPHA2.

If struggling with the interface to let you use your fucking STICK is your idea of fun, yeah sureyoucan have fun. But otherwise, fuck outta here. They need to patch this shit and hit it with a $20 pricetag, then I’ll buy it. No real effort went into this from SNK-P once it came out in arcades. They literally took their same shitty netcode, made a shitty halfassed interface, added two characters (which were probably just pulled from arcades due to time.) and called it a day.

Enjoy spending $60 on something that will be $20 in months time.

…this thread makes me wonder two things.

should I actually buy this?

will samurai spirits sen ever see a console port?

Bah,your post simply make too much sense for most people here. :looney:

Most of them will never understand that for the casual gamer who might be interested in a new fighting game,KOF XII simply won’t cut it.Bad reviews, lack of content and a single player mode that’s as barebone as possible will be sure to piss or scare off the typical gamer. We will have to wait until XIII for a worthy product, but the damage will already be done.

I’m quite surprised there’s no “Are you ok? Busta Wolf!” in the game (from what I’ve heard, this game comes out a month later over here.

Really doesn’t sound worth buying at launch though. It basically sounds like the game is actually SNK’s version of SF2HDR. Basic package with hi res sprites. The only difference being KoFXII costs $60 (40)

Well, I’ll put it this way… Do you absolutely have to have it right now? If you do, then sure. Be warned you’ll need other people to play with to enjoy it. If you have that cool, you might have fun. Maybe.

If you don’t, then wait 3 months for the pricedrop. You’ll probably be able to buy it used for like $15 at gamestop.

Also, don’t invest in SNK-P stock, although it may go up when they start making pachinkos or something.

Or he could just wait if the patch is good.
You’re so negative… But you do make some valid reasoning (some)

Characters have a lot of command pokes not listed in the Movelist. The game feels really tight and balanced, I’ve played and fought every character and I can’t tell who’s top tier. I also love how when you need to punish someone it’s obvious where and when to do it but it still takes skill and timing to hit them.

I noticed that better players tend to have better connections. Whenever I see the synchronizing message show it plays flawlessly when I don’t see it it’s hit or miss. If you don’t like the bitsyness turn on the filters.

Sheesh, you could’ve just said, “No, it’s bad for other reasons, too. Don’t buy it.”

Different artist.

Only the AOF team, Raiden, and Iori and Elizabeth have that issue. Kim is without Chang and Choi but he was teamed with Terry and Duck in XI so whatever.

No storyline but it’s a re-birth of KOF. I guess SNK thought NOW would be the best time for a new Iori.

Personal preference. I know a couple people who’d be more than happy to wipe the floor with you using Ash.

One good poke. Right…

Then you’ll just be bitching about how SNK only gave characters two moves. You’re really stupid if you think each character has about one good normal.

Looks like it’s time for you to go back to SFIV.

King of Fighters XII from facebook said

"*Ignition would like to say thanks again for the passion, dedication, and patience the fans have had with King of Fighters 12. As the game’s publisher, we are constantly listening, and trying to keep you guys happy. The patches are currently being worked on, we have additional servers confirmed for the game’s official launch on the sony side, and we are working on the 360 side as well.

Fromfan input, there are now three threads in the discussions tab to keep us all organized:
“Official DLC Request Thread” - so we can all state exactly what we want (Mai :))

“The Feedback Thread”, created by fan Nickolas David Anderson, for us all to report bugs, lag, etc. so the developers at SNK have a better idea of what to work on. Thank you, Nick, for stepping up and making something that will help Ignition, SNK, and the fans.

“Features Request Thread (not DLC)” - there are features we all would like that don’t quite fall in the category of DLC, varying button configs for different players (thanks Patrick Hwang), beeing able to kcik red bar players out of a room (props to sergio ruiz), and other features of that nature

On top of that, after the game’s official release, and the patches are implemented, we WANT to continue to hear about your experiences! We are communicating with the great people at SNK (the developer) regularly regarding performance, and are with you in regards to all your wants. Your voice really counts.

Thanks,*"

At least they are aware about what’s missing. Seems like a good sign.

Literally the only valid complaint that I have read so far is the netcode which will hopefully get much better on Tuesday. Quite frankly I have the game for PS3 and it is a total blast to play.

Really people, you can’t expect more characters at this point. 20 for a brand new hand drawn 2d fighter with the level of detail that KOF XII brings is absolutely fantastic. As far as extra modes and unlockables are concerned, yea it’s a fighting game who cares one bit about stuff like that. As long as the netcode improves then this game is golden as far as I am concerned.

I’d rather use Ash Crimson than Andy Bogard.

I’m pretty sure Andy Bogard is one of the most generic fighting characters I’ve ever seen.

Me myself.
