Is KoF XII really that bad?

Yeah I never was big on 98,2002, but only for a recent time on ggpo so I guess I’m not in your shoes but any game of this caliber that has multi-player and a constant player base I believe is worth the $60. I always look at money spending this way which a friend named Todd introduced to me. You go to a movie for 1.5-2 hours and you spend 10 bucks at most theaters. I spent $60 dollars on KOF XII and I’ve probably already busted 15+ hours and I plan on playing a lot more than just that so in my case I have my moneys worth.

lol.

Install the game, RTFM, realize it’s a series reboot and not 2002UM. Three prerequisites to KOF XII.

Hey tendersauce can you tell these guys the type of connections we get? GGs today man, u got some nice skills.
Ill pay $60 for someone to give Alex a grammar lession.

i got a xbox and didn’t install the game and i still have no problems with any type of loading

If they fix the netcode, I see the game being a good title. SFIV and BB have fairly decent code (some say BB is better), so I don’t see why KOF can’t.

The game doesn’t have the same “polished” quality that SFIV has (which I think is better than BB), but at it’s core is a no-nonsense fighter! It would have been nice to have had a boss character, but so what?

Some more cool stages would have been great. The stages available right now (75%) are crap if you ask me. Personally, I don’t care for fat women eating shit (seriously, no Mai for fat bitches?!?!?!) in a French based cafe or devil worshiping idiots is a SEA OF RED. An aesthetic Chinese Kung-fu based stage (waterfalls, hills/mountains, etc.) would have been wonderful. Who needs the stadium stage??? The stages from kof 98 were terrific!

So yeah, grading the latest batch of fighting games:

SFIV w/ great netcode A++
SFIV w/out netcode B

BB w/ great netcode A
BB w/out netcode B

KOF w/ great netcode A
KOF w/out netcode F… ‘-’

I do like this game. However, I can admit SNK screwed themselves over with this game’s (shitty) presentation.

SNK pretty much said a big “F U” to the casual market with this game (their lose because there was only money to be made). There is nothing in this game to lead a complete newcomer into the right direction. This is the equivalent of an RPG putting you into battle with no tutorials on the system…at all. You’re at a loss and have no idea what to do or how to do it. There aren’t even command lists in the booklet. Good shit SNK. Good shit

There are a lot of nit picks in this game’s interface that all just add up to a huge annoyance as well.

-Being unable to deselect your character
-Being unable to exit to the main menu from character select
-Loading screen between each round
-Poor and time consuming method of button configuration

These are all inexcusable interface design flaws IMO. They just fucked up. There is no defending SNK on that they screwed up the interface for the game.

However, one thing I WILL give them mad props for is including an OFFLINE replay mode. This is what I’ve wanted all along. Not SFIV’s championship mode only replays or BB’s online only replays.

I liked the France stage…:xeye:
I thought it was kinda funny.

couldnthave said it better

I think the new King of Fighters is a bit of a breath of fresh air for the series, kind of reminiscent of how alpha changed mechanics for the street fighters. As I see it already, SNK seems to be the equivalent to EA sports of fighting games (i.e. yearly titles, same or similar sprites, minor tweaks from year to year with major differences every 3 to 5). After having five thousand years of the same character models, I must say that I am ecstatic to see new art, and new, delicious, juicy sprites. As far as gameplay mechanics go, a very nice reboot on the series. 4 fun buttons, no “n” groove though, and the clashing causing some serious rethinking of priority seems pretty nice. For me this is more fun than Blazblue, as having a punch/ kick based fighting system just makes more sense to me than a coolstuff button and weak to heavy.

…and yes, while it does have a nice variety of characters, I wouldn’t mind seeing more, or even paying for them later with some microsoft points.

I 100% agree man.

personally i dont think we should have to pay with psn or mcrosoft points for a half baked game that being said i do think the fighting system and gamplay are very good but snk didnt rreally give us much if they give us some dlc like characters or more modes it reallyshould be free

I understand that I’m going to be in the minority on this one, and it’s alright, but I prefer the older sprites compared to the new ones for a lot of the characters. It has nothing to do with the work that was put into them, or the additional frames of animation, but an art direction standpoint; some of the characters just feel like they have less of a personality than they did before. An example of what I’m talking about would be Ryo: before in the series, he looked like a cocksure but skilled fighter, grinning before battle started, and smirking after completion. With the new sprites, it looks like he’s trying to emulate his hero, Akuma, right down to his SNARLING BATTLE FOCUSED GRRRR face on at all times. After playing the guy for so many years, it just doesn’t… feel like Ryo.

EDIT: On that note, that’s what I miss the most about this new incarnation of the King of Fighters universe: lack of personality and soul. The fighting engine is incredible, as far as I’m concerned, but the lack of simple things, such as a pre-battle animations (especially between rivals) and not having multiple post-battle animations, distract from the experience. Simple things like that breathe life into the characters, making them seem more than two-dimensional puppets. I know this isn’t something that makes or breaks a fighting game, but for some like me, it adds that extra layer of charm that makes me keep on playing. I also miss having your teammates in the background cheering you on when you win or looking upset when you lose.

I find that very offensive. Ryo can actually take a hit. Akuma can’t. That and I think he moves smoother then Akuma.

Lay off my man alex073088. He’s new guys.

Anyway, I’ve been hearing mostly bad things about the game, but I’ll still pick it up just to support another 2D fighter. I just hope that patch fixes the netcoding issues.

I have to agree with you on some of the more nitpicky notes as far as presentation goes. Terry throwing his hat, or Kyo and Iori having a “my hand fire is more firey than yours” contest did add quite a bit of personality to the game. That being said, things like that can be added with patches (although devs shouldn’t rely on post release patching) as games like left 4 dead have had post release patches that do more drastic things than add pre battle animations and laggy networking issues. My point is though, it just came out, its very pretty, and incredibly deep and fun to play, and that to me, is the most important thing about a fighting game.

I’ve played the game a lil since I’ve bought it and I think it is wat alot of people have been saying…a step in the right direction. This is prolly the most hyped baby step i’ve ever seen, but even still the game isnt bad by any means. Its unfortunate that SNK didn’t strike oil like blazblue and SF4 before them but give it time

Exactly, and the things I mentioned can be added in KOF XIII or XIV. Let SNK focus on what matters the most right now: fixing what needs to be fixed, and making the fighting engine even better than it is currently.

I’m a hardcore SF player and have never been into KOF. This title, from what I can tell, seems really good. On top of that, after I get this down I plan on trying out 98 and 2002. So if anything, this title might add more players to the ggpo and 2df KOF players roster. I guess that’s a good thing.

good to hear, get on the IRC channel so u can find some good competition for 98 and 2k2 for GGPO. I hope anakron will start up ranbats again for 98 as well.
