Answer to original poster: Cody’s a great character, but Akuma, Ryu, and Gouken are better in most situations. That’s really it. There are more moves to manage with Cody, all of them being for different situations whereas with a character like Ryu, shoryuken can be used many different ways.
Had no problem doing well with Cody, and also had no problem getting utterly raped by good Cody players.

Really? I think Cody has one of the more useful Ultra’s in the game. A “DP” FADC Ultra is a winner in itself, but then you also have U2 that punishes a loooot, even backdashes and sweeps. Great damage as well, I couldn’t do without it.
Gooks?
I wouldn’t say for sure that Gooks is better than Cody.
Cody would be so unfairly good if he had a shoryuken. I mean his RIDICULOUS damage output is hit confirmable (cr lp x2 > cr mp > hpCU = 200 damage lol). He’s got that godly back throw and some amazing option selects. Powerful options in mid range including his solid pokes and anti-air options a lot of which can help him easily score a knockdown, and amazing tools for staying close and pressuring. He’s also got two amazing Ultra combos that are both fairly easy to land and do MASSIVE damage.
There is like only one really competent Cody player who’s got videos (Ryan Hunter lol) and the game is still new and not all his potential has been exploited yet. For example, Ryan in various videos still screws up a number of opportunities for option selects.
The more I watch Ryan play Cody, the more I think Cody is going to be really really amazing as SSF4 progresses. He’s just got so many options (until he gets knocked down lol).
I like Gouken, but I think he ain’t got shit on Cody as far as I’m concerned.
They both have pretty good damage output. Gouken’s wakeup is marginally better and he’s more competent defensively in fireball wars, but his anti-air options are worse. His normals in general are much less useful since he really can’t hit confirm into anything that matters. And Cody’s damage and setups into his Ultras are generally better.
Saw Ryan Hunter destroying good players over and over last night using Cody. He was pulling off really long strings with him, using a lot of F+MP and EX rocks. His pressure game was rediculous. Haven’t seen any youtube vids from last night yet.
They didn’t record it last night, but it was pretty insane. My game with Cody leveled up a lot after watching those fights, got a little more courage to use the f+mp a little more. His normals are so fun to pressure with. Thank you Option-Select, and thank you Mr. Hunter.
After playing Cody for over a month now, and really starting to get a grasp of his strengths and weaknesses, I am a little confused as to why Capcom removed the ability to FADC his normal Bingo, and lk and mk Ruffians. At first, it made sense, he would be way to beastly, but now I’m not so sure. I think that is exactly what Cody needs to make his offense compensate for his horrible wakeup options. What do you guys think, would this make him too beastly, or would this make him feel like a solid character?
cody is good, ibuki sucks. The tiers will change. I dont see any ibuki’s doing well in tournament. And poeple are dropping her right and left. If you excel in cody’s attributes use him. He isnt great anywhere. But he is good everywhere. So i think you just have to keep changing your gameplan with him to be effective. my two cents
EDIT: ryan hunter is the only person ic using cody well. He doesnt use enough zonk but you gota know your gona hit when you use zonk.
justin tv optionselect channel- you cna watch thier replays here http://www.justin.tv/optionselect
Uh huh.
This m216xlegendx guy is sick. He needs to keep posting.
Thanks guys. I still have a lot to work on, and like A2ZOMG says, I still drop a few combos and miss a few opportunities here and there. I don’t play as much as I’d like to, because I’m constantly working on the site :xeye:.
I just wanted to say, in some of the more recent videos, and on the stream lately, I’m almost embarrassed because I’ve been playing a lot more reckless then I would normally or would advice others to do. A lot of unnecessary jump ins, and a lot of rejumps during pressure as a gap makes it look ugly to me when I rewatch myself. So just be aware that I don’t like this lol.
Cody has a solid enough pressure game on the ground, that it’s not really necessary. It’s become a bad habit the last couple of weeks because I know I can get away with it, and because I haven’t been playing enough to focus on refining my game, but it’s getting to be crunch time for Evo now, so expect to see me playing much more solid and refined in the next few weeks.
Also, m216xlegendx, Zonk is very matchup specific, in my opinion. I don’t feel that there are very many matchups that require it, and a lot of the matchups that I think do, I don’t play very often, like Ryu or Balrog for example. There are other matchups that I want to test it’s use in that I haven’t gotten a chance to. Specifically matchups where Cody gets destroyed by mid range pokes that are almost all high/mid, like Vega for example. Especially because Vega generally cannot punish something like a blocked Zonk very hard unless you space it very poorly.
Zonk is interesting because even though it’s so risky, the reward can kind of justify the risk because you get a good knockdown with a jump start on their stun (especially on CH). But still, I’m under the school of not doing risky things like that. I prefer to play solid, which is why you never see my use random Zonks in random matchups, and also why my recent play has been disappointing to myself.
I definitely think zonk’s biggest saving grace right now is that it does retarded damage off counter hit. I was hoping it would be better against Sagat, but his hitbox doesn’t extend out far enough when he does low tigers. Shame the non-EX one doesn’t go through lows.
I feel like zonk is move specific . Like for instance i see cammy canon strike …zonk.but zonk wont be usefull vs to many other things cammy does. Still its worth it to beat cannon strike . i have been testing out constantly charging zonk. I wanna find all the good times to do it. Acouple days ago i beat cammys U1 with a ex zonk knuckle. I think its very range specific counter. Zonk sucks vs juri thats for sure But i think ex zonk is good vs almost every character
Can you Forward hard kick over low tiger shots? From far away its safe and from close its good if the forward hard kick touch’s sagat.
lol
reckless & jumpy pretty much sums up my play as of late… it def looks ugly on a rewatch & make me never want to upload any match vids
Vega can punish zonk at all times with whatever he wants. c.mp xx EX barcelona, izuna hurts but c.mp xx scarlet terror and c.mp xx jab rcf also work. all three options do a lot of damage.
The only time I use zonk is on the other guy’s knockdown, because it beats everything (including most invincible reversals) except blocking and jump outs. Any defensive use… ehh. you are better off not charging one, most of the time. IMO.

Here’s a match where I tried using zonk to its extent, keeping a charge most of the time, and then seeing how that went. I know I’m not too great on the c.lp c.lp c.lk CU, but i’ve gotten better… aka using c.mp more. The zonk is more or less for building meter if they are doing nothing, or for certain chars moves… but you have to be expecting them. I think best thing to do, if play one round without zonk, then u get to see how they play, and if u see small habits u can zonk, why not charge one up for some nice stun and damage:D
Video of the Rog is Dems00, a solid rog, who yesterday was tearing up a room full of good players.
I’ve just started with Cody, having used only Ryu, and then Ken, in vanilla. With Cody, I feel as if I’ve finally found an amusing and aesthetically pleasing character who suits my play style.
There’s nothing more satisfying than finishing somebody off with a bad stone, or better yet, a knife throw. Even though a hadouken is technically the cheaper way to kill someone, throwing a stone at somebody just seems like such a dirty way to win, especially when you get them with chip damage. Lovely. Also, grabbing the knife and going nuts with s.lp/c.lp is incredibly satisfying, and seems to take a lot of people by surprise at this point. When you get that knife, and get in close, it’s so enjoyable shanking the crap out of your opponent. Also, I’m liking Last Dread Dust, due to the fact that even if the first hit doesn’t connect, it can still sometimes connect with the rest of the string, or at least chip away at your opponent, and occasionally connect with the last few hits for a get out of jail free card.
Now, his wakeup game is pretty bad, but what are the best options on wakeup?
I would agree. Getting my ass thrown because I am retardedly charging an ex zonk instead of teching got me off using it for defensive purposes in most situations.
