I’ve been getting good with Cody, but my problem is that it seems like all his moves leave him open wider than a British Hooker! Any tips on what moves to avoid so I don’t get punished as hard as I do.
Every single one of his specials are unsafe on block lol.
Simple
^^Thats why you don’t finish the block string with an unsafe special unless you have meter
Apparently saying that Cody is “bad” is the same as saying he cannot be won with or that he has nothing going for him. Sure, Cody has some nice tools. Nobody said he doesn’t. But other characters have simply much better tools and/or their shortcomings are alot less pronounced. Is it really that unthinkable that he’s in the bottom half of the roster? And is that really THAT bad? I don’t know too much much about Cody but even the people who are supporting him in this thread are giving me the impression that he isn’t good because he has to “work harder”. It doesn’t mean I don’t want to learn him now. It just means I have to accept that I have to work harder. And given that the two characters I used most in vanilla were Seth and Gouken, I am fully willing to accept that.
Unless spaced correctly and dependsi on the character of course.
I normally use this in blockstrings if im ending in CU, cr lp x3 crlk/mp lp CU. I haven’t gotten punished and sometimes they continue you blocked where only the whirlwind part hits.
If I want to attempt for counter hit.
cr lp x3, cr mp, f mp
cr lp x3, cr fp, buffered into EX rock if i have meter or Zonk
cr lp x3, cr mp, Zonk
Zonk usually pushes them back enough where most characters can’t punish you.
In most cases you will trade or get the CH.
Cody normals have plenty of advantage and he has to pretty nifty frame traps for CH. So if you are playing with U2. Frame traps are your best friend
Yup.
If you’re choosing a character because of how competitive they are, that’s fine by me…but I want to play characters that are fun, which means they are capable of winning, and capable of being enjoyable even when losing.
The bottom line for me is that when I lose, I would have won if I’d played better. I don’t plan on playing at the highest level tournaments, and at the level I do play at, good or bad match-up, Cody has the ability to win if I play him well.
I enjoyed Gouken in SFIV, I don’t enjoy him nearly as much now now because his tools now require more focus on zoning and defense. Even if his improved normals make up for his (now non-overhead) DF kick and increased recovery on DF throw (which I don’t think they do), the limits those changes put on his offensive options after a knockdown (and his own wake up options with EX DF throw) were enough that he stopped being fun. Blanka and Cody both have enough tools and require enough skill that I am able to win games and enjoy out playing my opponent, so that’s why I play them more than anyone else. (And yes, it’s the nature of SF match-ups that sometimes it’s possible to feel you’ve out played your opponent and still lose, and other times it’s possible to feel you’ve been out played but still win. But to me, it feels like there’s pretty good correlation between playing well and winning with Cody.)
If other people don’t feel that way about Cody, it’s a good thing they have 34 other characters to chose from.
Cody’s “nap time” taunt alone is more fun than entire characters movesets. He really is a lot of fun to use. Screw tiers, Imma throw rocks, bingo and BnB whenever I get the chance.
I got kicked from a lobby by using the Nap time on a ryu that wanted to cheese me with dokens. I guess he got salty when the fireballs passed above Cody >D
I just find that overall against great players, he lacks the mixup tools.
Cody’s stun game is excellent if you can get in. CU really is an awesome finisher it does a crazy amount of stun. I just wish stones were more useful, they do more stun than any projectile(except Denjin)
Wait he gets low enough to have fireballs pass him… oh this just got good
So much misinformation on Cody it’s sick. His only major weakness is is wake up game. All his normals are viable pokes, rocks and such for mind games, combos with high stun. It is sad though someone mention it early he won’t get used as much because of the american mindset of “Top tier is all that matters”. He isn’t top and far from bottom. If you are going from a character you are used to a new character just in general you still need to still figure him out. I’m sure everyone’s idea will change as soon as they see a pro using cody somewhere. Like everyone using Guile because Daigo does. Stay free.
^ Good post. Everyone stick with Cody, he’s awesome and you know it.
I put Cody into the category of
Rewarding Very quickly
But hard to become good with(Like any character)
While character like C.Viper … It’s a slow process but rewarding at the end.Cody he’s at the ultimate opposite.
Honestly im pretty happy that Cody isn’t top tier.
Like mentioned above, Cody is just fun…
He has enough tools for me to be happy with, and i dunno about you guys
BUT i feel FANTASTIC when I kill somebody with U1, and you get the KO from the first hit and it pauses on the “Jackpot” punch…
Best KO screen in game to me!
I dont play at the highest level, and i generally stay away from Top Tier characters… because i hate having too many advantages from the jump. So im glad…
Unfortunately im straying away from Guile he seems to be up there now, but i get to play with Sagat alittle now
“Is Cody strong enough?”
if you think so…YOU ARE ALREADY DEAD.
none of his specials are safe. YOU ARE ALREADY DEAD.
Cody is for seasoned SF players… LMAO “don’t get knocked down”
Ever heard of blocking? BD, FD? Just because he doesn’t have a n00b ass get out of jail free card like Ryu/Ken, doesn’t mean that he’s free on knockdown, it just means he has less options. It means you have to be smarter. It means you have to learn how to block. It means you have to be able to read opponents and make smart guesses. It means you have to be able to tech throws… My Cody has the highest win percentage amongst all the other characters I use, and he isn’t even my main. His power is crazy. How many charters have a meaty 16 hit B&B combo that can be started with a jab? I hit it so effortlessly even I get sick of seeing it lol. Cody’s alkalies hill is his VERY unreliable U1 & U2. U1 has no range/chip damage and depends heavily on FADC which will miss if the opponent is crouching. His U2 is even worse as it does not fully land when it should and often leaves you hung out to dry for a free reversal… Again, even this should not be a deal breaker if you know how to setup correctly. He’s just not for n00bs. If you fail miserably with Cody, you just don’t have the fundamentals to be competitive in SSF4. Good fundamentals = own with pretty much anyone.
Good post, I agree pretty much everywhere but rofl at ‘alkalies hill’. Took me a sec to realize what it was supposed to be.

edit:VVVV How he baited the wake up Super with fake rocks at 1:35 is brilliant.
is cody strong enough? you decide.
