Is Cody strong enough?

The main difference between Cody,Viper, and Ibuki is that while Viper and Ibuki are more techinical in terms of execution compared to Cody they also have many more tools to work with in comparison especially for basic things like anti air, closing space, and dealing with rushdown.

Cody has a lot of stuff to work with though, which brings in its own set of difficulty. But yes, he’s very easy to pick up, one of the reasons I love him since I’m the worst player here.

I wasn’t really trying to make a strong judgement call on the character’s technical complexity though, only arguing the semantics of the point. He can’t be strong and require work if the reason he requires work are poor matchups, then he isn’t strong by definition >_>

Cody seriously loses really bad to down back. He is a low-mid character for sure. If you can predict exactly when the opponent will press a button(will he mash? will he delayed tech? will he press nothing at all?) then you can do some damage, but every time you guess wrong, you are losing all your momentum and possibly getting hurt yourself, and unless your opponent is fairly predictable about when they press buttons, the odds are against you. Cody has nothing safe to use to approach a turtling opponent so every momentum loss means you are almost certainly going to take damage before you get back in to the sweet spot again, if ever. He is not bottom tier because if you press a button at the wrong time against him or he predicts your delayed tech, you can lose an ass ton of life, but he is certainly in the bottom half of the roster and I think he has some really, really, really bad matchups.

honestly sakeido your whats wrong with these threads…you play a character online a few times test some things out…find out what doesnt work…then come to the thread and talk crap about it…This thread is here to talk about improving all of our games as this specific char. But you in all of your genius have wrapped it up that he is no good and low tier. Wasn’t abel “low tier” in the first couple of months. Thats right, cause buttholes like you amassed your “theories and situations” in which the game was played before a stick was ever picked up. Its fine to point counter-point here because it breeds ideas. But your just being a know it all and kind of a penis. Take your views to the akuma thread. Bless them with your wisdom. And dont bother to write back at me. I wont post back to whatever smarmy retort you post. Also… your gay.

Agreed, he’s been gifted with way more good shit than a large percentage of the cast, his short comings are way over exaggerated imo.

Every character has a ‘this character sucks’ thread atm, it’s just what happens when a new game is released.

Shut the fuck up and check out the sticky I have in this exact same forum…

I’ve put my time into this character and these are the conclusions I’ve reached. Nobody is doing a very good job of disagreeing with me, or explaining how I’m wrong except to retort with the same scrub garbage every character’s matchup thread is overflowing with. A lot of it is coming down to “you don’t even know enough to know you don’t know.” If HunterSFL or yeb got involved, then we could have a real back and forth because they know how to actually play Street Fighter and I’d gladly have that discussion with them, because then everyone including myself could learn from it. Buuuut they know how SRK works, so they don’t get involved. I think I’ll stop trying to help, too.

Nice troll job though. although… I wish I had seen this before I got all salty http://shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=217510&p=7946160&highlight=#post7946160 Wow man, just wow

People don’t seem to get it… Cody can win, just like anyone can in SSF4. He just has to work hard. He doesn’t have the cheese necessary to be a high tier character… he has too many losing matchups, I still believe his weaknesses outweigh his strengths, and whatever else. He’s mad fun to play but I really don’t see him lighting the world on fire.

I agree: Cody is mad fun to play.

sakeido’s views aren’t the end all opinion either you jags.
he’s stating and delivering the information to you on what he’s found. if you don’t believe him I don’t think he’s gonna go cry in a corner, go figure the shit out on your own if you don’t want to listen to him.

cody’s fun factor (to me) outweighs all his shortcomings. I’m willing to stick it out with this character regardless of what people say because I ENJOY PLAYING HIM. yes, he has shit matchups. yes, his wakeup game is garbage. but you know what, he’s fun. more fun then I have with anyone else in the roster, regardless of what my w/l ratio is. so you know what that means?

I don’t give a shit where he falls on tier lists. top, bottom or mixed somewhere in between, I’m still playing him.

100% this ^^^^

He’s so damn fun we’ll make him good by learning from our massive experience in losing, as the community of Cody players.

cody has the tools to win ANY matchup, u just need to learn how block and tech properly

That goes for every character, really.

D-d-d-double post.

Cody has a harder time getting in on patient players with good keepaway and counter options, though. A shoto, Guile or Deejay (or a Gief who gets the life lead) forces you to play it really risky and unpredictable, as both Cody’s throw game and overhead are easy to react to. And it’s not like you can chip them to death anyway, as Cody won’t win any fireball wars anytime soon.

Damn, though, if it’s not satisfying when you DO break their defense. Cody has one of the easiest, most satisfying and most hurty no-meter light-DP punishes in the game, too.

yea his damage potential will keep him up there…we just need to figure out some of his tricks

In my eyes, he is strong enough…he is a REAL street fighter after all…

(yes, i’m bias…been using the criminal ever since a3 so i have a reason to be lol)

Being?

Ryu- Cr FP, Hp CU
Ken- cr lk, mk Ruffian

Why do you say to use different things for Ken and Ryu? Does cr.HP xx HP CU not work on Ken?

Ken’s DP has less recovery than Ryu’s, so you have to time your punish much more tightly for Ken in order to not fall to a second, mashed-out DP. Cody’s cr.HP is great, but it has some startup.
