I think Cody is a very well balanced character. Its just everyone else is over or underpowered.
a not-really-invincible move that is unsafe on block and loses to mash short is a mixup on its own?
Cody’s ability to build meter makes it easy to throw out a well-timed Bingo, which is one hell of an invincible move, of course unsafe on block. But again, if you’re really in a pinch and got 2 or 3 meters to burn just FADC out. I agree that Cody is a totally solid character, despite his bad wakeup options. His walk speed is somewhat made up for with his plethora of forward-moving normals which puts a lot of pressure on people at the same time.
You can’t FADC a non-EX bingo.
f. RH and c. MK is a plethora? f. MP is good, but that’s not a poke you’re using for footsies, and walk speed isn’t as much of an issue within mix-up range anyway.
Cody has way too much swagger to worry about rushdown. Cody is probably top tier…if you don’t ever, ever, ever get knocked down.
Just don’t get knocked down, and it’s a Bingo!
He seems alright in regards to hitconfirms;he can do cr.lp,cr.lk,and cr.mp into hp.CU or mk ruffian. If you are on point with your links you can force people into standing with cl.mp into cr.hp.And his overhead however slow is a godsend.
Without it people have no reason to block high outside of jumpins so i like to toss them out if i can at max range.Meaty overhead is nice to have around too, keeping them on their toes when they are waking up without meter.
I honestly stopped depending on counter hit combo openings though,if i get them i get them but the risk is too high.I like his potential with punishes and jumpins though.I think that’s where the big damage is at. Off a deep jf.hk with 3 ex stocks he can do 750+ stun pretty much ending a match against Seth and dealing some healthy damage overall.
Rocks can barely keep up with other fireballs and i don’t like burning the ex on them unless i absolutely need to and I think people are seeing that you can’t whiff against Cody at all so people play extra extra EXTRA safe overall against him.Going into fights with the opponent already scared is good but yeah…not a lot of big counter hit chances. Plus when he gets rushed he doesn’t have the best options (block,ex zonk, slide? I really wish his ex ruffian had his invuln start even a litlle earlier too)
Tl;dr:he’s strong but you really have to work…REALLY WORK.
QFT!
I totally agree.
I dont think Cody is low-tier, but He is definitely not top-sagat-tier either, he is good. but you have to work for it.
Definitely not as bad as some people think he is.
dudes, saying “he’s strong but really have to work… REALLY WORK” means that you are working against bad matchups, and tiers come from matchups, so if you have to really work hard all the time… then are the odds are pretty good you are dealing with a low tier character.
Ken goes even with basically everyone and has no seriously disadvantaged matchups, and he is almost exactly mid-tier in this game. Cody has to work harder than Ken; Cody must not have as favorable of matchups; Cody must be lower in tiers… which leaves low-mid and low tiers.
He’s strong enough to win for sure, but he is not strong enough to be high tier.
If anything i personally feel he’s low mid myself.I can’t deny his comeback ability though.Again you have to be on the defensive most of the match and people are going to play safer against you since you are Cody but i feel as though the punishes are worth it and justify being in block 3/4s of the time in most matchups
Playing lower tier characters is fine by me though. If it’s a character I like i’ll play them and try to work as best i can around it.Even if i don’t win matches with ease I feel better about playing as Cody than almost anyone in sf4 standard.
Why the hell are people so quick to bitch about a character on SRK, instead of asking for advice they make a new thread about how crap X is, i swear there are at least one or two of these threads for every character, even Sagat has one for fuck sake.
The character does not suck you do, or do people need a pad-cody before they start thinking “hey, this character is alright”.
His counter attack works wonders, but you will have to work hard with his back medium anti air punch to keep the pressure.
Not necessarily, bad matchups mean just that, going against that other character just puts you at a disadvantage, being strong but requiring work just means that the character might not be as successful at mid level play because of certain technical aspects of the character.
This imo
I just don’t think people understand the concept of match-ups. THEY ARE WHAT DEFINE TIERS. Cody is not completely handicapped – no one is saying that. But most of you are proving Sakeido’s argument by your very reasoning.
Yes, you’re working harder. Why do you think that is?
Sigh HondaUser is right, just stfu an play whoever character u like an come to the fact that he/she will HAVE faults some better than others some don’t.
Is he strong enough?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??! I heard this doooood can bench like 950lbs so hells yeah he is plenty strongs yo.
>.>
Tier lists matter for people not competing in major events against people who are very skilled at the game and the match ups they will face. No, really…
BTW comparing Cody to Akuma, or any other shoto for that matter, makes little sense. You’d find a big difference in play jumping to a lot of characters going from SF4 Akuma. Long story short play who you want because no matter who tells you what if you enjoy playing the character you can get pretty far with it if you become a good enough player. This game is very well balanced and there is not really a huge difference between A tier and C tier anyway.
Play which character you like, even if said character is low tier you can still dominate online if you’re good. Tournament play is a different story but its not like every online player will attend them. I’d settle for good online play.
My bad on the non-ex Bingo. But anyways, it might not be a ‘plethora’ but t. HP also slightly moves forward and makes people think twice, and his specials generally move him forward as well. Oh, and don’t tell -me- the walk speed isn’t an issue, I never said it was, I’m personally fine with it.
Possibly due to technical limitations or nuances in playing the character… A character can’t be “strong, but requires a lot of work” if the reason he requires work is because he has a lot of bad matchups… Then he isn’t strong, he’s just a bad character, which takes more effort to succeed with by nature.
You have to work harder with C. Viper or Ibuki due to a technical threshold. In terms of BnBs, basics, etc, Cody is one of the easiest characters to use in the game. So I would disagree with you strongly there if you’re claiming Cody’s “technical limitations or nuances” are creating the difficulty.
