Introducing ~JAPANESE MUSIC!

Thread already dying out?

I was thinking of Yasushi Yoshida. His style is far less electronic though.

I only like their Highvision album, though I haven’t heard A yet. The songs I posted below are from Highvision. If you’re only going to listen to one, I recommend Silent Yaritori.

Modern Classical/Post Rock:

Electronic Pop Rock Stuff (Which I like to call Rocktronica):

Gonna post mostly electronic music next time. IDM/Nujazz kinda stuff.

OK, FINALLY something good. Ha, Audio Safari has a relatively unique sound. I’ll def post them under post-rock, though it is slightly deviant of that. Yasushi Yoshida is cool too!

I also may put up Boris later for variety.

EDIT: Listened to more Boris, they are pretty damn good! Def. posting.

I’m going to have to start greatly filtering the sort of post-rock music that is going to be featured. Post-rock is filled with stagnant genre conventions and any one artist sounds just as good as another aside from a select few. For those posting post-rock please take into consideration any UNIQUE qualities (or technical ability, expression) that the artist you are posting has.

Supercar for example will not be posted because they are damningly 3rd rate in every genre they’ve ever attempted. They are extremely outdated and have nothing but bland, repetitive instrumentals devoid of any technical craft and have a uniform tone of ambient noises and sleepy vocals. Supercar to me is a group that reached popularity during a time of Japanese music being a novelty along with Quruli, who is also mediocre. While either group has a couple of decent songs, their absurdly long discographies are filled with evidence of their unremarkable natural ability.

massive amounts of hate fro supercar. their first album was very very good.

Now I can be a far bigger music nazi than 95% of the pop I literally have listened to hundreds/thousands of gigs of music ranging from every genre cept prolly noise and country. And you can’t tell me that first album was exceptional shoegaze, dream pop. There other albums I’m not a big fan but you can’t dismiss everything they did.

on another note I don’t really know what she falls under perhaps dream pop but Salyu is very nice

Yeh, I’m not dismissing everything they have done, just most of it. They do have some good songs, but as a group of legitimate talent, at least HALF of their discography needs to not be lame, IMO. I nearly didn’t put Fujifabric on the list because of their last album (that probably lead to the singer’s suicide) being one of the most terrible pieces of shit I’ve heard in a long time. However, Fujifabric’s early-mid work is extremely impressive.

That Salyu song is very cool BTW. I’m looking into their other stuff now.

I actually just started listening to Te’ the other day, sooooo good. Thanks for the links.

In other news I am eagerly awaiting new toe material. They have contributed material for a Nike commercial lately and from what I can tell, they have been hard at work making some amazing music.

Can’t wait.

Oh wow really? That’s incredible, glad to hear they are making money. Do you have a link to the commercial?

Man its been a good while since i’ve listened to japanese music. I only know about a handful (maybe two…three handfuls) of the artists that was named in the OP.

How about some Round Table

Added REDRUM and NUMBER GIRL to experimental rock. They’re pretty great! Check 'em out!

Some of these might have been mentioned but I haven’t seen them on the main list yet. I can not stress enough how much people need to “acquire” the whole discography for Clazziquai Project and M-flo they have done so much amazing work.

Rock Surprised these haven’t been mentioned. Maybe they’re to mainstream for you underground Japanese fans!

<3 NUMBER GIRL

@g a m m o n: I don’t have the toe Nike commericial, but Ill ask the guy who let me know about it on Facebook for a link to it. He also ripped the song from the commercial too. Links incoming.

Yes! More people need to know about Number Girl. You should also feature KIMONOS on the front page, under…I’m not sure. The album is a like throw back to 80’s pop, but it’s still awesome.

I’m glad you checked out Boris some more. They’re a great band.I got to see them over the summer when they toured in the US and man they put on a great show.

OK thanks a lot man! Super rare sounding!

Heh, I’ll look at the other ones but Clazziquai is definitely, definitely Korean. One of their few groups of excellent quality.

I put KIMONOS under Avant-Rock earlier, great recommend!

I can’t believe I forgot about Ken Ishii!

Hey guys, I need some help. A friend of mine just gave me a massive list of J-pop artists (generalizing) that she recommended/ listens to, but I really don’t know where to start… imma just copy the list she posted.

TM revolution, An Cafe, Lar cen cial
Hyde, ai otsuka, amuro namie, koda kumi
arashi, kat-tun, double, BoA, crystal kay
Leah Slutty dizon, remioromen, HALICALI, hello project (including morning musume, mini moni)
Hinoi team, Yuna ito, utada hikaru, Ayaka
NEWS, Yui, SMAP, puffy ami yumi, WaT, Yamapi, ayumi hamasaki

the only artists I know are utada hikaru and ayumi hamasaki, what other artists could I start with to take a hack at this list?
thanks guys. Also, this thread rocks.

Yea they are from Korea but a lot of their stuff is sang in Japanese, they also do a lot of collaboration with Japanese artists.

larc en ciel, BoA and crystal Kay look familiar. I would choose larc en ciel first, they’re pretty good. The main singer for larc en ciel is in a new band called “Vamps” which is pretty sweet.

Sadly I’m going to have to bring the hate.

Most of those artists are typical garbage. Though, as pop artists go, they each DO have some cool songs. Good luck trudging through all that mess though. You may really like some of it. Utada Hikaru is actually good so you may want to start with that. HALCALI has a unique lazy, but cool style, but it can be hard to get into.

Amuro Namie, DOUBLE, and Koda Kuma are all sister-hop artists. They pretty much just slut around and sing pretty well to standard JP hip-hop production. No REAL complaints, but they don’t bring anything to the table. BoA is pretty decent I GUESS.

Puffy Ami Yumi is garbage. Ayumi Hamasaki is cool, but after you’ve heard a handful of songs you can write her off for the next 5 years till she decides to do something with her life and make new music.

Remioromen is the only REMOTELY unique group on there, and that is still not something I’d recommend.

Those artists are pretty much the reason Japan has such a bad rap amongst people who actually enjoy and care to understand music. If you’ve never heard Japanese music before, then all of that stuff will be pretty unique sounding to you. Though its just a different form of generics. Those artists get a lot of play and a lot of Americans actually know about them. Those artists are the equivalent to the Creed, Linkin Park, Breaking Benjamin, Nickelback, 3 Days Grace, Rhianna, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga you’d hear on the radio here. Different sounds, but the same appeal, derived from different cultural preference. I don’t dislike them because they are popular. Popular music is POPULAR because they really don’t offer anything to music artistically and present near parody to music that has already existed by regurgitating them with modern FX and production. SOMEHOW this urges people to buy their work through familiarity and whatever extremely subtle shift in sound or style they may have. I barely even want to get into some of those people.

Hope I didn’t speak my mind too much and that you continue to enjoy the thread, ha. I mean I’m not trying to convince you, you may love them all. I’m just saying I wouldn’t waste my time. You could walk into a “Hello Cutie” japan import store in a US mall and tip over a shelf. You’d find nearly all those artists on the ground.

I say put em in your car and listen to the as you drive. You’ll be through with them eventually. Once you’re done you’ll be pretty well informed as to what generic Japanese music sounds like.
