Introducing ~JAPANESE MUSIC!

EDIT: ADDED TSUBAKIYA SHIJUUSOU TO ROCK (1/28/2011)

INTRODUCTION
Welcome to one of the most comprehensive introductory guides to Japanese music on the internet!

Here I’ve compiled an easily digestible list of, whom I believe to be, the most important (mostly modern) artists of Japan in their respective genres. This thread is dedicated to my love for music, and the perpetual discovery of its ever broadening and exciting horizons. I want to share the labors of over a decades worth of personal research, with the hopes that you will find enjoyment in something amazing you never knew existed. Some artists of personal importance may have been neglected, though the list is readily capable of being adapted to the tastes of the community. No traditional Japanese music (taiko, folk, gagaku, etc.) will be featured, as that is not my focus, but you may hear some influence in the following works.

With regards to the highly subjective nature of music, I’ve attempted to provide a diverse array of sounds, while still adhering to a personal standard of quality: dynamism, creativity, technical ability, pacing, and spirit (energy/sincerity/x-factor).

WHY FEATURE JAPAN?
Whilst any other country is obviously capable of producing excellent music, Japan’s dramatic history allowed its own to develop differently than most. Their music was aided in developement by an adaptive reaction to inhereted Western culture. This reaction helped to create a unique, still rapidly evolving, melding of world sounds. Exhibiting diversity well beyond the current generation of America’s most popular muscians, the works of Japan often feature “genre-fusion”. This is where several types of music are combined in a single song to create a new sound. Genre-fusion can be found anywhere in the world, but Japan’s music possesses an unusual concentration of, competency in, and creativity with such. Japan’s take on Jazz is the most noticably different upon observation, integrating more: pop, rock, hip-hop and electronic elements. This eclecticism is what makes Japanese music so exciting.

I promote Japanese music purely because of my own invested interest, no disrespect to other nationalities. I urge you to form your own opinions and enjoy music in how you see fit! That said, head below to uncover the unique sounds of Japan! I have divided them into specific genres and sub-genres, knowing most of you will not have the patience to dabble in it all. For example, you may find house to be the worst music you’ve ever heard! It’s better to skip than endure, but even sub-genres contain a lot of diversity. Please, don’t be too hasty to shun them! Not all of the genre assigments are entirely resolute, as some of the artists are simply too diverse to be confined to just one. ‘Shiina Ringo’ was particularily difficult to place in an appropriate category. Discovery what genres you enjoy and branch out from there!

PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT GROUPS YOU LIKE AND DON’T LIKE! IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING NEGATIVE TO SAY, PRESENT IT IN AN INTELLIGENT WAY TO PROMOTE DISCUSSION!

I hope to update this in the future, subscribe if you wish!

*** PROGRESSIVE POP**
Kirinji
Kirinji is composed of two brothers, Takaki and Yasuyuki Horigome. While not demonstrating oustanding technical skill, they stand tall as one of the most musical groups of Japan. Within the confines of a few notes, Yasuyuki (lead vocals) displays an uncanny ability to develop tremendous and moving melodies. Complimented by subtly dynamic and diverse instrumentals, their work can range from progressive rock to synth-pop. Either contrast, they are unlikely to disappoint. Their ability to compose, produce, and play their own work is phenominal. The breadth of their knowledge, and astute ear for harmony, allow them create compositions of unparalled beauty.

*** EXPERIMENTAL JAZZ**
Shiina Ringo
Known for her eccentricity and rolling her "r"s, she is one of the most creatively diverse musicians in Japan. Her original albums are definitively rock oriented, soon advancing into experimental electronica, and finally resting upon a still eclectic jazz style. She typically writes her own songs and plays the rhythm guitar, sometimes the bass or piano. These abilities solidify her image as a truly talented musician. She has recently devoted a lot of attention to her band Tokyo Jihen, an elite group of artists who display unrivaled creativity.

*** FUSION JAZZ**
Casiopea
Their lead guitarist, Issei Noro, stands out as one of Japan’s premium talents. Throughout Casiopea’s long running collection, he helped define the prototypical sound of Japanese Fusion Jazz. The group also home to one of the best, if not the best, bassists in Japan, Tetsuo Sakurai. Sadly, Casiopea eventually dispersed due to creative differences. Tetsuo Sakurai and Akira Jimbo (drummer) left to form their own group, “Jimsaku”.

Jazztronik
One of Japan’s greatest surprises. Jazztronik, is the psuedonym for the perpetually changing group headed by producer and pianist, Ryota Nozaki. Quickly rising to fame, he has established his position as one of the greatest producers in Japan and as a key member of the Nu-Jazz movement. His demonstrative global knowledge of music is unparalled, featuring: samba, bossa nova, house, straight jazz, Hawaiian folk music, R&B, hip hop, pop, disco, neo-classical, etc. Jazztronik’s unique sound continues to innovate and expand upon the outlying realms of modern jazz.
*** **"Samurai"
The song that escalated Jazztronik’s career starward. Its tremendous melody, and combination of asian and tropical flavors, allow it to remain one of Ryota Nozaki’s finest works.

T-cophony
A fantastic guitarist of amazing technical fortitude. He heavily employs the usage of a tapping technique in his all of his songs, allowing for increasingly complex and rich sounds. His works often feature dual-layered guitar. Because of that, it can be difficult to discern how tremendously complex each line by itself actually is. I’ve included some solo play videos as well to elaborate.

Sambomaster
A rock group of charming intensity. Their songs typically follow a progression that inevitably leads into the frontman singing like he’s pleading for his life, followed by a rending solo. Though often predictable, their instrumentals are extremely competent and they bear a spirit of unshakeable vivacity. Their song, “Seishun Kyousoukyoku,” was also used for the 5th opening credits of Naruto.

*** AVANT-ROCK**
ACIDMAN
In their beginnings, ACIDMAN was no more than another punk group. Surprisingly, after only a couple of albums, they went through a massive period of growth where they transitioned from a generic punk style, to more unsual jazz influenced rock. Sometimes, ACIDMAN deviates into math-rock, post-rock and even bossa-nova. They have a fantastic ability to create interesting, rich soundscapes with their instrumentals. Though, their most outstanding characteristic is how they play with volume. Their attention to something so simple, delivers stark contrasts in the dynamics of the song, enabling them to achieve a powerful emotional effect.

Ling Tosite Sigure
Music so dynamic, it could be defined as schizophrenic. They’ll jump tempos and whole genres unexpectedly. The vocals will go back and forth between the lead guitarist and female bassist, as they compete for who can sound more insane. Following that, they’ll shift from unapologetically vicious drumming and grinding bass, to serene and ambient, almost shoegaze like guitar work. Ling Tosite Sigure creates a wildly unpredictable and exciting experience. One of the most original groups you’re likely to hear.

Tokyo Jihen (featuring Shiina Ringo)
Evolving into one of the most threateningly great bands of all time, Tokyo Jihen continues to impress with consistently incredible music in nearly every respect: composition, accessibility, innovation, technical refinement, and spirit. Shiina Ringo covers the later aspect with her gushingly emotive vocals and style. Every member of this band displays a near faultless domination of their roll. The guitarist is great. The drums are great. The keyboards are great. The bass is great. It’s all great, all the time. When they all come together, they create music of trend-setting creativity, dripping with an unheard of flavor so cool, you may find yourself comparing all other current muscians worth to them.

band apart, the
One of the greatest bands of our current generation. The band apart also evolved from a punk background like DOPING PANDA and ACIDMAN. However, this band’s talent has vastly superseded them both. Since their more stereotypical roots, they’ve developed an outstanding style that combines punk, jazz, rock, funk and even bossa nova. With their abilities and symbiotic cohesion as a group, they are able to form truly mind-warping syncopation in their work. Each member of the band apart is given equal presence in their songs, allowing for an absurd amount of interplay between the instruments as a whole. The band apart does not consist of individual members. They are a well tuned machine, churning out complex rhythms to a devastating level of cool.

susquatch
Featuring some of the most accelerated and beautiful instrumentals around, susquatch is one of Japan’s premium groups. Their note progressions are often surprising and evoke a mood of a hard earned victory. Though their instrumentals are veritably complex, with their stumbling rhythms, they are easy to absorb with their sweet and crisp tones. Another group that demonstrates extreme control over syncopation.

cool thread or something

Wow! Thanks for taking the time to do all this. I saw a lot of good stuff in this list that I listen to. Shiina Ringo, Tokyo Jihen, Utada, Zazen Boys,9MM Parabellum Bullet,Sparta Locals.

Did you put Numbergirl? You should have if you didn’t. Also, Kimonos is another band created by the lead member of Zazen Boys and Numbegirl with Leo Imai on vocals.

Kimonos “Soundtrack To Murder”

Boris should be on this list. Very popular stoner rock/drone/doom band.

Boris “Pink”

Awesome stuff! I’ll be coming back here in the future to find new music.

Mass of the Fermenting Dregs is a relatively new band that’s been getting a lot of attention recently. They have a very spacey rock kind of sound.

Wienners is another band I’ve discovered recently. I would say their sound is very…spastic? with a pop punkish sound. Most songs don’t go over the 2 minute mark and can contain a ton of ideas in that short span.

Ha, awesome yo! I was really wanting to put in HALCALI, but I wanted to get the thread going. I’ll post some more of those you recommended later.

Great taste yo! Nah, no Numbergirl, but they def need to be on there. Thx, for sharing Kimonos. They are kind of insanely sick. Boris, I’ve heard before, but forgot. I’ll put 'em up later since I don’t have anything else like 'em on there.

List has Polysics, list has validity.

Although, you really can’t demo Polysics without mentioning Black Out Fall Out:

Honestly one of my favorite bands period. Pretty much wore out my copy of Neu easily.

Signed,
Everybody

I want to hate. But I’m having trouble.

Yeh man, I’ve recently gotten back into POLYSICS. They are in a league of their own.

Believe it or not, Ayumi Hamasaki does not make all of Japan’s music, ha! Glad you are at least having trouble.

some of the acid jazz would be better without the engrish.
