Installing an MC Cthulhu and Imp in an Xbox 360 SF4 SE stick

Yo Toodles, don’t want to butt in, but since you’re on here. You wouldn’t happen to ever have heard of the joystick turning a console back on after it being shut off right? (360 in this case, will be playing, will shut off the system… through the interface or pushing the button, doesn’t matter…) System will just boot right back on. Once I shut it off a second time it stays off, but it’s really weird.

Also, even if I manage to have it off for good, the guide lights stay on. I worry I’m going to cause problems, but the stick never gets hot or anything. Is it anything to worry about?

360 is on D1, PS3 on D2 on an imp + Regular Cthulhu chip (preassembled).

So I am here to save you homies on a few dollars. I was doing a bit of searching, and I decided to go with this solution to high quality plugs: http://www.alliedelec.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?SKU=7421154&MPN=SV+80
What is nice about the 8 pin din style is that it has only a third of the depth that the Neutrik ports have, like only 11mm.

However, for all the people that are still rocking the Neutrik Ethernet plug, check this out and save a lot of money (only $2.68!), and get free shipping! http://store.daleproaudio.com/store/category.aspx?&Page=9&Sort=1&catid=14065
Save a few cents and don’t get it in black anodized metal:
http://store.daleproaudio.com/Items/neut-ne8mc1?&caSKU=neut-ne8mc1&caTitle=Neutrik%20NE8MC-1%20Ethercon%20Series%20RJ45%20Connector%20with%20X-Series%20Boot

Edit:Lol, a few more quick searches and a I got the spelling wrong, but if the dalproaudio store runs out of stock, check these guys out ($3.35): http://www.newark.com/neutrik/me8mc-1/connector/dp/19P7143

I wish I had spent a little bit more time searching, because if I had found this deal, or their MC-8 solution, I would have totally have stayed the Ethernet route, instead of going with those Lumberg connectors that are just as expensive. The only downfall to the ones that I picked out, they are the style that you need crimp your own cord for. Still a hell of a deal though, save yourself the money, go out, and buy a RJ-45 crimper for the same price of the others! Hell of a deal in my opinion. Enjoy!

That is very weird. The best recommendation I can make is the two troubleshooting posts I’ve put up for the Imp and Cthulhu. Start with the Imp:
http://forums.shoryuken.com/showpost.php?p=6789488&postcount=233

If that all tests well, then test the cthulhu: http://forums.shoryuken.com/showpost.php?p=6789666&postcount=1975

If we aren’t getting messages or anything from the PC, then we have to fall back to troubleshooting with a multimeter. Hopefully one of these will pinpoint the error. Just make sure it is acting up before testing. These wont do anything if the stick is working.

Umm, I have to admit, I’ve never heard of anything like that happening before. Can you post up what kind of 360 board (and which if any mods on it were done; trigger inversion, LEDs rerouted, whatever) and whether or not you’re using the start+select=guide function of the Imp?

Hrm nothing extra other than the Imp+Cthulhu. No special mods, no LED’s or anything. Just point to point soldering. All the buttoms work, switch works so the imp is ok. So as far as function goes it’s all tip top. Using the LS/DP/RS as a switch. With RS being the PS3 switcher.

This issue doesn’t seem to happen to my PS3. Though I may not have been paying much attention as I use the 360 more. Just when I shut off the Xbox, it turns everything back on and even if I shut the system off for good, stick stays on (strangely, with all 4 Guide lights on)

Also a new symptom, noticed it today. If I turn on the system while it’s still plugged in. Even if it’s on 360 mode, all the guide lights stay on (the 4 player leds on the Xbox button) and nothing works until I unplug, replug it in.

Basically at this time, there is no reason for me to shut off the Xbox or turn it on with it plugged in, because both cause some kind of issue. It won’t shut off, or won’t turn on properly. (I think since I shut it off, and it stays on, when I boot it, it doesn’t even notice.)

This may sould silly, and I’ll probably realize 2 minutes from now why it isn’t the case, but I’d like to test something if you dont mind. On the 360 in 360 mode, I’d like for you to turn on turbo on all of the buttons and verify the LEDs lighting up match the proper buttons. (oddball shot in the dark Im looking for is the possibility that one or more of the 3 ribbons going to the LED board got swapped.)

Sorry it took me so long, but yeah Turbo lights work fine. I never unplugged any of the ribbons. I just flipped it upside down and rebolted it and soldered in place like Bomberman did. :frowning:

Cool tutorial, if I had some soldering skills I might have tried it. I’m gonna bookmark this just in case.

Shew, Big thread ^^… So, im getting my TE stick today, FINALLY. And im all excited about it, its the 360 which i will use for my PC… A friend of mine has a PS3, and id like a mod for it to be able for PS3 play.

Can i just install an already assembled Only PS3 Cthulhu board into it? Or do i need something else? Id like to make the install as easy as possible, so i dont have a chance to fuck up with it

Read the whole thread. If you really don’t want to mess it up, take 30m of your time. You’ve probably spent more time than that watching Friends. This is a sensitive mod, requires a lot of knowledge, and a lot of troubleshooting steps have been done from Page 1 to here. Almost every problem you can run into has occured. I highly recommend it.

Thnx for the Guide & the neat shots taken for it.
I hav 1 question, since im building a stick from scratch, and im inteding to make it PS3/Xbox360 compatiple, & so I’ll have to start with hacking a common-ground 360 controller, but:

  • How can I tell if the 360 controller is common grounded PCB or not?

I hope it doesn’t require opening the device (by model no. or sumthin), cuz i need to confirm b4 buying one.

I finally got around to dual modding my TE stick. Thank you Toodles for creating these awesome boards and for your ultra fast shipping and of course Bomberman for your guides.
I spent a little under 4 hours from begging to finish and below are the results. I followed Bombermans guide here and found that its missing only one little tiny detail. I needed to solder a jumper between the “USB Only” points before it worked. Nothing a nice big glob of solder couldn’t fix in a second. After that it was working perfectly.

This is where I decided on placing the Cthulhu. The white squares are tie down blocks.

Here’s the Imps location

The shielded ground cable was wrapped in shrink wrap.

Wiring of the main board and Cthulhu.

All done

That’s really a cthulhu assembly step, so it belongs in the assembly instructions (which it already is), and not really in bomberman’s guide. You must be using the PS3 only cthulhu right? If you look at Toodle’s Cthulhu assembly instructions it says “If you are using an original Cthulhu, for Playstation 3 or PC USB only … you need to solder together the two points labelled ‘USB Only’, pictured in the first image.”

Nice work though, looks clean

for those of u who know how many questions i have posted here regarding the dual mod :

i finally finished it !

lol, thx to my buddy’s fine soldering, everything seems to be working fine at first glance!

big thx to Toodles, Bomberman, and Manman!

two question tho

  1. i cannot seem to start the PS3 with the dual modded stick. (home button and any button dont seem to start it). once i start the PS3 with a dualshock, all the buttons responds.
    is that normal?

  2. when are those 2 rows of LEDs right beside the Turbo button supposed to be flashing? i have never seen them light up, in either PS3 or Xbox mode.

nice, congrats. Not sure about your first question cuz I’ve never tried turning it on with the stick before… for your second, I think to turn on turbo you hold the turbo tutton and then tap the button you want turbo to come on for. Once for light, again for medium, and a third time for the fastest turbo. The light only comes on while you’re holding the button down (once turbo is activated) iirc.

I wanted to put one of these in my Hori EX-SE, but someone told me I couldn’t since the EX-SE has a non-common ground stick on it. Anyone one have a solution to this? The only thing I could think of is having a big “28pdt switch” of sorts or a couple of relays that will let me select which pcb the buttons and stick are connected to. This would keep both pcbs on completely separate circuits and would take a whole lot less soldering. Although a lot more wiring. Anyone got ideas please?

Wired controllers can’t turn on PS3’s

“A USB hub is currently drawing too much power”

how do i fix this message?

So I’ve had mine dual modded using Bombermans Guide for a month now, and just recently I have experienced weird lines running down the game screen. I figured, “okay, a restart of the xbox will fix it.” So I restarted with the controller plugged in on the DP option (the option normally used for when ya stick it into the PS3), and boom, red ring + E74 error.

Has anyone else had a problem after doing a dual mod with xbox hardware errors? I’ve never had a problem with it before until after I dual modded my stick. I realize that this is a common error for many xbox360 users, but I just wanted to see if it is a possibility that a dual modded stick could have caused it. It just may be a coincidence (which I really hope that it was) that my xbox360 decided to overheated after I completed my dual mod.

I just did a Cthulhu dual mod on my TE. I decided to go with a switch instead of the imp (colored wires down the middle), and switch the D+/D- like on my HRAP3 dual mod.

Anyway, it works great. The only strange thing is when I’m in PS3 mode, one of the turbo LEDs is lit up, as is the entire 360 ring of light. I guess due to the fact that I’m passing power into the TE PCB, but seems strange just to have the one lit up.

I’m having an issue with my TE dual mod…
Cthulhu->RJ-45->PS2, I have to unplug and reconnect my cable in order for it to be detected on my PS2. Not the case with my gamecube RJ-45 cable. I’ve not had this problem until today

My TE
MadcatzTE pcb
MC Cthulhu…I rolled my own
Neutrik NE8FDP D-Series Mount RJ45 Jack
Neutrik NAUSB
DPDT switch

I have another custom dual mod stick that doesn’t have this issue. However the difference is this stick uses an IMP board and a standard RJ-45 coupler. The MC Cthulhu in this stick was preassembled by toodles.

I have 2 different PS2 RJ-45 cables. Both have the issue with the TE and both work fine on the custom.

I thought I saw someone else with this issue on the boards, but can’t find it.
