Installing an MC Cthulhu and Imp in an Xbox 360 SF4 SE stick

well i dont necessarily mean avoid EVERY ounce of soldering, but from the looks of your mod, you soldered each button on the cthulhu to a button on the TE pcb… if i could just avoid all of that, soldering the few other small points that i know im going to have to solder (i think its the 5v thing and ground or something?), then it wouldnt be so big a deal.

basically what im curious about is if i can take TE pcb button A, and cthulhu button X, and just have them join at the quick connection portion, or at some other terminal.

Most of the wires connecting the Cthulhu to the TE pcb can be connected to screw terminals. You’ll have to solder the wire on the TE side, but the other end can be stripped and put into screw terminals. All of the stick directions, all of the buttons (including Home/Guide, Start, and Back/Select), the power line (VCC screw terminal on the Cthulhu, labelled USBVCC on the TE), and the ground line, can all be connected to cthulhu screw terminals safely.

Might sound like a dumb question… oh well.

I’m ok w/ soldering a wire from my SE pcb but I’m not sure on how I’m supposed to connect the other end of the wire to the screw terminal on my MC Cthulhu

Am I supposed to just shove the wire into the side of the terminal?

Would soldering the end of the wire to the bottom of the terminal work? (I know it would defeat the purpose of having the terminals there in the first place.)

The screw terminals should have a large opening on the outside. You strip off about 1/4" of insulation off of the end of the wire, stick it in the hole, and screw the screw clockwise so it tightens down on the wire.

Yes, that’ll work.

Quick question before i’m going to fight through this thread:

is it possible to use the standard cord for both, the 360 and PS3?

You could just read the first two posts of the thread… :stuck_out_tongue:

The PS3 and 360 works with the standard usb-cord and the rj-45 jack is just for the other consoles (PS2, GC,…).

Am I getting this right?

yes.

hey guys, I didn’t really read the whole thread but if anyone could give me a qucik answer i’d appricate it.

so am I to understand this modification is to make your 360 se stick compatiable with most if not all systems… cause I have an SE stick and ive been looking at the cthulu board “pre assembled” for awhile and all I really wanna do with my 360 se stick is make it ps3 compatiable as well(just that not compatiable with like GC and etc…), but from the pics it doesn’t look like theres a usb 2.0 socket for it but im just gonna assume you plug in the usb cord etc.

my question is; can I acheive what I want making the 360 se stick, ps3 compatiable with this method minus the dremel tool and all that other extra stuff with perhaps the pre assembled Cthulu board and If so is there a tutorial for it …?or would it be easier using this method with an unassembled board and skipping the other parts of the tutorial?

UH

This thread IS the tutorial.

People who don’t read the guide and then ask questions that the guide answers make baby Jesus cry.

I’m gonna cosign on this one. I’m generally in favor of people helping each other on forums if they can, but the fact is people like bomberman and toodles put a lot of time and effort into making these tutorials and guides for people. It’s one thing to read all the info, and maybe miss something or ask to clarify details, but just skimming or skipping the tutorials outright and then expecting people to take the time out to answer is kind of rude. I would hazard a guess that if you can’t take the time to read/understand the tutorial, this is probably not a mod you’re up to doing- either due to lack of knowledge or the habit of cutting corners and not being thorough. I’m not saying I’m smarter than anyone else, or trying to come off as a jerk, I just think that bomberman’s tutorial has all the core info needed to understand the mod.

my bad; I didn’t mean to get all your undies in a twist, I did skim somewhat through it before I posted and will probly read it more in depth this time around cause of a simple answer wich was all I was looking for.

much appreciation and didn’t mean to offend some people :x

you’re best to read the first couple of posts, really thats all you ever need, jus read it over and over and make sure you understand whats being said in the posts before you even attempt the mod.

Preparation is the key

Just wanted to say thanks to Bomberman for putting up such a good tutorial and Toodles for creating the cthulhu and imp. I just finished installing my cthulhu and imp into a 360 TE and everything works great.

hi! I’m a scrub at electronics! lol. I read thru the first few posts, I hope u guys can be kind and let me as sum noobie questions.

http://i27.tinypic.com/rmmxs7.jpg <-- I picked these up. My goal is to dual mod my xbox TE stick for use on my PS3 as well with only one USB cord (the stock one currently on the TE)

I understand absolutely nothing about electronics… what I do understand is how to solder and follow a diagram.

that said, say I assemble my IMP and wire perfectly following this diagram…

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/eastx/arcade%20sticks/ps3cthulhuandimptotestickdiagram.jpg

then… am I done?? or are there further steps to take?? Of course I will place and secure all wires and boards to try to make it look clean…

a few more noobie questions:

  1. the guide says

“The Imp will switch to whichever console’s data wires are connected to the 1-data points by default. You must hold the Guide/Home button when inserting the stick’s USB cable into the console in order to switch to the system that is wired to the Imp’s 2-data points.”

according to the diagram I posted above, it says “Switch the Madcatz stick to ‘RS’ before…etc”, so say my cthulu is wired to data-2, do I now need two conditions checked to make sure the stick will work on PS3 upon wanting to use it?

  1. my current setup keeps the TE stick plugged into my xbox, and when I play games I jus grab the stick and press guide to turn the system on. Since Guide button now initiates PS3 mode, does that mean nothing will happen is I try turning on my xbox using this usual method?? Do I need to start turning my xbox on with the button on the console?? Likewise, will holding down the guide button now turn my PS3 on if the stick is plugged in??

  2. I noticed a discrepancy between the TE-Imp-cthulu diagram I posted above and this:

on the cthulu, do you wire the 1V or the 3V point to the VCC on the Imp?

  1. Thanks!!

You can basically just follow everything said in the first diagram you posted as far as wiring goes. For your ?s:

  1. The part about holding the guide button down was written before the idea to use the RS point was suggested. You can do it either way, some people just feel that using RS is easier because you don’t have to hold something down while you’re plugging the stick in. If you follow the diagram you linked, that will use the RS method. It’s just one or the other though, not both.

  2. I think that whichever method you use, once the stick is recognized, you don’t have to worry about what guide mode/RS stick do anymore. That’s just for when you plug it in. Once it’s recognized, guide/home should be recognized fine on both systems until you unplog/replug. (i’m like 99.9% on that, if i’m missing something someone please correct me)

  3. I think all the rows are the same. I know 1 and 2 are at least, I thought someone said row 3 was different once, but I’m pretty sure you can use the V point on any row.

ok so out of curiosity, what is the difference between the TE-cthulu-imp diagram and Bomberman’s walkthru that causes one to use a guide button method for selecting the secondary PCB versus the RS switch?

also what difference does it make to wire the Imp’s VCC point to either the TE PCB or the cthulu PCB? In the diagram, imp VCC is connected to cthulu which is supposed to be secondary PCB, but in the walkthru it looks as if a wire is soldered onto the SE’s PCB (which I understand is the secondary PCB on that project as well)

see: http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/eastx/Bomberman%20SE%20stick/impandsepcbwired.jpg

is the imp’s VCC point meant to connect to the secondary PCB?

(btw I have no idea what vcc is lol)

-EDIT-

1 more question! sorry!!

can I leave the USB cord attached to the TE PCB?

or do I need to cut it off and resolder it onto the IMP?? coz I think that’s what the diagram is telling me to do…

  1. difference is where the guide point on the IMP is hooked up.

  2. i’m not sure if I get what you’re asking here, but if you look at the diagram there is a vcc (and ground) connection from imp->cthulhu and cthulhu->Stick PCB. Since you’re moving the USB cable to the imp (to answer your other ?) the power now gets routed through the imp->cthulhu->stick pcb (this is how I understand it, I’m not an EE genius either, but it seems to make sense based on the wiring).

To be frank, you said you have soldering experience, and I think that really the only 2 things needed to do the mod are that and the diagram. However if you see the diagrams and read the tutorial and you’re still asking those questions, you might be better off having someone do it for you. If you’re still determined to do it, I say read this whole thread, follow the diagram and if you succeed, awesome- if not, then post your more specific questions about what went wrong.

For the PS3 only cthulhu’s, i couldn’t for the life of me get the cthulhu to power on when i had the vcc on the imp connected to the v on the third row as per the diagram.

What i did was placed the wire on the vcc on the cthulhu to the vcc on the imp, basically 2 wires on the vcc section of the cthulhu, one going to the +5v of the mad catz pcb and another going to the imp.

The difference between the guide button holding and the rs switch is you can pretty much leave the stick in either PS3 or 360 at all times which make it much easier so there’s no button pressing or what not.

Regarding your question about the USB cable, as far as i know, it needs to be on the IMP, as the IMP is what acts as the switch, my understanding is the following:

  • power from teh usb goes to the IMP, then depending on whats been pressed, it’ll “switch” it to whatever is on the #1 section or the #2 section

Having the usb go to the mad catz pcb, will mean power is going straight to the mc pcb and there’d be no way of “switch” to the cthulhu (i’m only going from how these diagram’s are drawn, i’m sure bomberman and toodles will confirm sooner or later)
