Installing an MC Cthulhu and Imp in an Xbox 360 SF4 SE stick

Thanks to ezpoint and Bomberman for the help, my stick is finally working!

I appreciate it guys! Keep up the good work, and thanks Toodles for making such great products!

So i’m looking at doing some more mods for some friends, is the main difference between the PS3 only and MC cthulhu the following:

  • The PS3 only cthulhu is wired to the V on the 3rd row
  • The PS3 only cthulhu is wired to the 2 slot on the IMP as oppose to the number 1 slot

As far as i can tell, that’s the only difference.

Bomberman, i also noticed that there’s two guide button section on the Mad catz pcb in your diagram, this is fine to do it that way? I previously connected both wires to the guide section on the top right hand side of the MC PCB (in your diagram connecting the home on the cthulhu to the solder point on the MC PCB). I’m guessing it will be fine otherwise you wouldn’t have drawn it like that on your diagram.

Btw… thanks so much for these digrams, makes my life easier

Yes, that’s the only difference. See, the MC Cthulhu has diodes protecting the # 1 and 2 V spots, but the PS3-only Cthulhu lacks those diodes so the # 1 & 2 spots don’t work unless you add an extra wire. Thus using # 3 is easiest on the PS3-only Cthulhu.

As to your second question… Basically, it’s become apparent that using the LS-DP-RS switch on the SE & TE sticks is an easier way to select which console mode the stick is in rather than having to hold the Guide button. So in my diagrams, I have a wire going from the Right Stick solder point on the SE/TE PCB to the Guide point on the Imp. This keeps you from having to solder 2 wires to one spot, and like I said it’s just easier to use the switch than to hold a button. I’ll change the text of the guide to match the diagrams in the coming weeks.

Please let me know if that answers your questions well enough.

Sweet!! That’s all i needed to know, i’ll try it out over the next couple of days.

Answers my question perfectly!!

I quite like having to press the guide button, i think this is more convienient then switching back and forth… I dunno i guess it’s personal preference.

I’m guessing if i want to go the original method, i’d just do what i did previously, ie. put both wires in the home solder point and have one going to the home point of the cthulhu and the other going to the guide section of the imp.

Can’t give out rep points unfortunately but thanks again for making this guide much much easier :tup:

Glad to help. Yeah, just run a second wire from the Cthulhu’s Home or 360 stick’s Guide points to the Imp if you prefer holding the button.

I have a question regarding the cord that connects the SE PCB to the 360. The red, green, white, and black wires in it … I’ve messed with it a lot and they’re pretty short now. I was having trouble getting it into the imp and soldered out the contacts in it. So while I await another, I tried getting it back to work on 360 itself. It wasn’t registering. Does it need the shieldled ground black wire that I cut off?

No, it doesn’t need the Shielded ground wire. If you need to, peel back some of the black rubber to expose more of the 4 main USB wires.

Sooo close to having this stick done…

Here is the deal:

360 SE Stick with PS3 only Cthulhu and Imp…

Here is the wiring diagram when everything was working:

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e90/KiyokiX/3446190974_c0e07b3cff_o.png

(Even with the “usb only” spot jumpered, wasnt getting power thru the V1 column, came on after moving the 5V wire to the same VCC spot the 360 was in)

Everything was working fine and dandy for about 20 minutes…Guide button was switching the data lines correctly, all buttons working…

Friend went to hot glue down all the solder work…just gently laid a strip of glue along the the wires to keep them still.

Came back to play…start and select wouldnt work in ps3 mode…opened back up to check connections, resoldered them just in case…no luck…then the ps3 mode wouldnt work at all.

Everything still worked on the xbox side. I got an multimeter and checked all the connections for continuity, everything was ok. I’m no electrician, but when I checked the 5V when in xbox mode, it stayed consistently at .005 or .004 at the least. But when checking the 5v while in ps3 mode, it fluctuated wildly from .001 to .009.

Now in order for the xbox pad to get power, the 5v would travel through the IMP>Cth>Xbox pcbs in that order. So i would assume that the cthulu is getting power (the guide button just flashes every few seconds when plugged in the ps3) Now is it possible that something may be burned out on the cthulhu?

Btw, i also tried moving the 5v on the cthulhu from the vcc spot to the 5v spot on the usb section (by D+ and D- in the picture) Still no luck…same result.

I am most confused that the xbox pcb is still working correctly even if there is possibly something going wrong at the cthulhu before it.

I will be working on it again tomorrow, I’m gonna try to rearrange my power and ground wires according to bomberman’s new diagram.

Question: Why is this thread not a sticky? I think this information is pretty important for it not to be buried.

Just a suggestion.

Thank you for suggesting it!
I guess MarkMan would be the person to ask, if you wanna.

BTW I changed my SE to use the LS-DP-RS switch to toggle between the 2 PCBs (as in the new diagrams I posted) today, and I am finding it very convenient.

It’s funny that someone just said that cuz I was looking at this thread (since i’m on a pc without my bookmarks right now), and thinking “what?! How is that thread not stickied??”, haha.

Seriously, this thread answers or links to everything you could want to know about multi console modding for the madcatz sticks. Those new diagrams posted make it even simpler for those that didn’t want to do any pesky reading, haha. Great job Bomberman

Oh- and Toodles, thanks for the cthulhu and imp kits, they got here quick, and assembly was a lot quicker than I thought

Bomberman, I think those diagrams kick ass, and and that one for the whole TE+MC Cthulhu+Imp+RJ-45 would be very handy. Would you be willing to share the .psd so I can draw it up the same way, or make one if you dont want to share?

Well i’ve hit a snag :frowning:

Been at it for the past 6 or so hours… i’ve followed the installation as per PS3 cthulhu only diagram, and for whatever reason, nothing happens when i plug her into the computer :frowning:

No 360, no ps3…

Weird thing is there’s definitely continuity within all points, each and every single point on the imp has continuity to its corresponding point on the cthulhu and mc pcb, i tested both pcbs by plugging in both pcbs to a usb cable and they worked individually…

what are the chances i have a dud imp?

Any other tests you guys think i can try?

Super strange…

the moment i used KiyokiX connection everything works!!

i moved the 5v connection from the cthulhu from the 3rd row v to the vcc (same point where the mc pc connects to…) and voila!!!

The whole thing now works properly… both the Street Fighter Fightstick and PS3 cthulhu is recognised under game controllers…

Just a quick question. (Anyone can answer it if they know)

The new diagrams you posted Bomberman, they make it so that the PS3 is the default and the 360 is the one you have to switch to RS to for it to work.

I want this to be the other way around, as the PS3 is going to be a rarely used system (only doing this for Evo really.)

Do I simply change up where the 2 D+ 2 D-, and 1 D+ 1 D- go? Basically just follow the diagram but simply flip those two positions? I really don’t want to have to flick the switch everytime I play at home. The PS3 is basically my movie machine, games are played on the box.

This has possibly been answered before somewhere and is probably why I even had the thought of switching the D positions because I’m really not that smart lol. But before I start soldering tomorrow I want to confirm.

Inverse, it makes me sad that you never rep me back. Anyway, the PS3-only Cthulhu diagrams put the Xbox 360 in the default position and the PS3 as the second system.

The MC Cthulhu diagrams put the PS3 in the default position because apparently that works better when using GC/PS1/Xbox 1 modes.

Indeed you can just reverse the 2 systems’ D+ and D- wire positions on the Imp if you want to change them.

Toodles, I just made them with Paint Shop Pro, but I can go ahead and make some including the RJ-45 jack soon.

Congrats, Casesar!

I still have you on rep cooldown. ;-; I don’t rep enough ppl these days. I should go on a neg spree. The wrath of Inverse is upon thee summer 09’ers!

Thanks for the info, I thought I knew what was up, just had to confirm it. You and Toodles get major rep from me as soon as I am able.

an 09’er raging on newer 09’ers! Now I’ve seen it all lol. Feb still counts as winter, so hopefully I’m spared from your wrath. Crap, you’ve been busy though- look at all that + rep.

Bomberman,

I sent a PM to MarkMan asking for the thread to be a sticky. Let’s hope it gets done!

And as always, keep up the good work!

I have not read all 17 pages of this thread yet, but I would like to know is this thread just all about using the IMP board? I want to dual mod with a DPDT switch. Nothing against Toodles, but if I plan to do other things like this, I want to actually learn out to do it and not take “shortcuts”.
