Did you really expect anything else? I mean why even try it, it seems you were predetermined to hate it months ago…
Do you really believe that? Like…seriously? Even if just the MK players adopt it, its still going to have like, the 3rd or 4th biggest community out there (behind Capcom and maybe tekken…) Nevermind new players that will come in and players from other games. And its in no way seeming to be not a competitive game. What makes Injustice not competitive?
Like…really? Because its flashy at times? Okay. I guess your big issues are with stage transitions, and yeah, I agree they animations are pretty over the top, and on some stages can be pretty long…but the single inclusion of that doesn’t make it a casual fighter. Thats just…not smart. to be nice.
I also think you missed the point, when you say they’re trying to attract Street Fighter players. Sure that point can be made (and they might just be doing it) but it comes down to two things really. A. They don’t want a game identical to MK, because its not an MK game, and B. and I believe Hector pretty much said this at PAX without fully saying it, they know a block button in a 2D fighter is not the most ideal way of creating a game, but taking it away from MK would cause internet riots from a lot of people. So, simply, they believe back to block is better for 2D, but tradition keeps it in Mk. Because Injustice is not MK, they made it back to block. A good way to differentiate from Injustice, and the better option for most people.
Ahh, I didn’t even realize that. Maybe she can do something more with meter.
So, my iPhone can’t play the app cuz it doesn’t have a gyroscope, and my gf with an iPhone 4 refuses to download it because she’s stubborn. So, 2 things:
1: Time for a new romantic partner, and
2: anyone have a solution to my iphone issue? Got a spare ipod touch 4th gen kicking around?
Heey man, I’m just saying, if I don’t like anything about a fighter, like, at all before it comes out, I typically don’t even play it. See DOA5. Had no interest in it, hated the last games, didn’t try 5. Its not like…a crazy thing to say. I’m sure your opinion of Injustice didn’t surprise you.
iOS version shows/spoils some of the extra costumes in the game. Not sure whats preorder/payfor/free unlocked in the game through playing but…
Arkham Harley
Batman Beyond
Knightfall Bane (the super Jacked one with no shirt)
A few others but they are already known (New 52 Flash and Green Lantern)
Killer Frost has a background that can be unlocked but no in game stuff yet sadly. maybe after her official reveal they will patch or something.
Its a fun little distraction game that leads up to the full release. If you can its nice to see the base comboes and character models up close as well as their supers. Sinestro ftw.
btw you need to log in to a WBID account to see the list of unlockables and how to get them/what version they unlock stuff for. They have no said how the confirmation for unlocks will go yet i dont think… Maybe like a code for each or something.
Any reason to use WW’s air dash other than to showoff?
I’ve found that to air dash as close to the ground as possible you have to roll uf>f>neutral>f other than a uf>f
Perhaps you can use it to avoid AAs and attack from behind? I mean, people are gonna say cross ups, but its kinda slow, I feel like it’d be blocked easy because you can’t cancel the air dash with an attack.
Not being able to cancel air dashes is a bummer, since WW can air dash pretty low. As someone else said connecting air attacks into ground combos is super awkward as well.
Not saying it won’t be, my blog even made the point that anything could be competitive - but what’s more important than that is demand for it on a grand competitive stage. Me and my boys have some of the most hype Bomberman and UNO Rush matches anywhere, not even kidding. But even multiplying us my thousands won’t mean streaming it will gather numbers. Nobody would sit down and watch that, or even respect it, and that’s fine. NetherRealm is out and out saying here’s something to stand with Street Fighter, Marvel, Tekken, etc - and I think that’s a bad way to sell your game.
My arguments come from largely aesthetic standpoints with the main point being what this game aspires to be. I’m sure this game can and will be played super hardcore and the best players will abolish less skilled ones. But that happens in a lot games, like Smash for instance.
But why is it Smash being at EVO causes so much controversy? Think about it, I’m not out trying to crap on the game as a hater or anything.
They totally are.
There is no clear superior guarding mechanic, it depends on how the game works around it. Injustice is in fact a modified MK game, square with that, and MK is built around a block mechanic. If it was absolutely better than surely MK would flourish with it and there would be no fear from fans. Surely they would have done it a long time ago. Mortal Kombat worked perfectly fine with a block button. Splitting hairs by saying back-to-block ‘works for 2D fighters’ is a baseless statement. Where’s the evidence that it doesn’t work?
Having a block button would not make it identical to MK. Marvel having a back-to-block mechanic doesn’t make it Street Fighter. Injustice has more than enough gimmicks and exclusive mechanics to let us know it is not a Mortal Kombat game. My blog doesn’t even make the case that it should be like MK. The point is it doesn’t know what it wants to be in the end.
And what makes you think exactly its not something that can stand right next to Street Fighter, Marvel, Tekken? MK9 has been a respected fighter since its release and has always gathered decent stream numbers. And will be at EVO for its 3rd year now. Mk players and fans for the most part are attaching themselves to this game. Barring like, a balance disaster or some kind of real broken shit that doesn’t get fixed soon enough, I can’t see this not living up to at least MK9 numbers. I honestly see it doing better than MK…
Because Smash is not a traditional fighter AT ALL. But in reality, once people saw past the “its a party game” thing with Smash, there hasn’t been a controversy with letting it at Evo. I have seen overwhelming acceptance growing at a steady pace of Smash melee in the last 2 years, where it was highly disregarded before that. This year it of course won the 8th spot at Evo, and I haven’t heard many people upset at that. Except those who may be upset their favorite game just barely lost.
Injustice is a traditional 2D fighter, with stage hazards. Its a totally baseless comparison.
I’m not saying block button doesn’t work, or isn’t a viable option, I’m saying from a design standpoint back to block is more intuitive, and I am an MK9 player. And they make block button work just fine in MK but honestly…if you’re making a new 2D fighter today that is not related to a franchise. Almost surely you are using back to block. And if any other company did it people wouldn’t be accusing them of trying to attract Street Fighter fans, it would just be how you make a fighting game today.
I just don’t see what’s wrong with adding cross ups in Injustice? What about that is a bad thing?
Having played the demo and played it at PAX more than a few times, I see no awkwardness in adding a crossup to a game based off of MK9s engine. Typically whenever I’d jump in in MK9 anyway it would be a “cross up” where I would jump over the opponent and hit them from behind. This isn’t just MK9 without a block button, all of the characters moves are built around having back to block. specifically the character specific jump in attacks in Injustice, the air mobility options, and not giving near half the cast a teleport.
The whole “It doesn’t know what it wants to be” argument makes no sense, to me. It wants to do what nearly every fighter released in the last 5 years wants to do. Look good/exciting enough and be simple to pick up and play to attract casual FG players, be in depth and have enough interesting mechanics for hardcore players to keep playing their game long after release. This was SF4s goal, this was MVC3s goal (see TACs, switch to L,M,H,Launcher controls, simple command option, flashy ass visuals) this was MK9s goal, this was SFxTs goal, this was even something like Persona’s goal.
And I agree with Kayla saying the block button isn’t for 2D is horeshit. It’s also horseshit that a block button in 2D fighters = plays like MK. 3D fighters have block buttons and hold back to block and they both work fine in popular titles (VF and Tekken respectively). If people feel like block button in 2D doesn’t work and the example is MK, why is the idea bad and not the execution?
It’s clear that NRS, much like Capcom when they had the Marvel license, is experimenting heavily on what they can add/remove and change. You can argue whether it’s designed by committee or not, I don’t care although I have my own opinion. When you get a license guaranteed to do well simply because of incredibly popular IP is attached, you really should try “new” things simply because the fanbase buying it will be more open to it. Look at the reception of experimenting in SF series and experimenting with XMCOTA, MSH and the Versus series.
So you make clear that this game is not MK and then cite MK’s acceptance for how this game would be received? And I already discussed why this game would not be received like those fighting games. Twice even. And I think you’ll understand if I don’t do the forum dance of phrasing something again a different way to make a point. If you don’t see my point on that still, I can live with that. Not trying to ‘win’ the internet with that one.
Our observations differ here.
The PS2 Naruto and DBZ games then? In fact that’s a much better match, thanks.
Or how you make fighting games forever, you mean. This isn’t some thing people figured out worked well, it’s just just a convention with so little examples to the contrary. How you can be so sure of its superiority when I can count on one hand how many franchises ran with block buttons in a 2D fighter. If you like it better, I get that, but don’t make it sound like it won some Blocking War Era that never happened.
Personal beef I rather not expound upon here. It’s funny because I adore Asuka’s cross-up in SFxT, but I think 2D fighters could stand to get more creative than an old glitch. A miracle of hitboxes is one thing, programming it into a game is pushing it.
What we need is not for me to say. I just wanna see other venues of opening somebody up in a 2D fighter. It doesn’t even have to be the new normal, I don’t care for how widespread something gets - until I feel it stifles creativity (which I feel is the case for Injustice). I think it would be interesting and lead to some surprising efforts. I believe in making burgers out of sacred cows, and I have little patience with the idea holding on to certain conventions ‘just cause’. That’s all really.
