I don’t want to keep arguing with you, but I think you’re really off base by comparing it to Naruto or DBZ games…those games weren’t made at all with a competitive standpoint in mind, Injustice was. And its clear when playing the games. Obviously any game can be played competitively, (I actually went to a Budokai 3 tournament at PAX and was so surprised at how seriously those players took that game…) but if you don’t build with a competitive focus, it’ll probably be a mess of a competitive game. I doubt Injustice will be that. They’ve clearly taken a competitive focus with the game.
I say its not MK because its not…Mortal Kombat. In name, and NRS tried a couple of big new changes to differentiate. (see back to block…) but it has its fair share of similarities obviously. And the MK community is backing it. And a lot of players from other games will try it, some will probably like it, and I have no doubt in my mind this game will have a community comparable with at least what MK had for the last few years.
And with the back to block vs block button thing, I’m not really trying to argue which is better, though I understand that’s what its seeming like. Just back to block is primarily the standard when making 2D fighters for the most part, its highly favored over block button. if you say just by using back to block on a new series of games is only to appeal to SF players, then couldn’t you say that about every game that has done that since SF2? and if thats the case…I guess thats kind of true.
Either way I’ll end with this. Want to clear up points, and statements I made. Be more clear.
That’s cool, I got ya. And I’m glad you’re being optimistic, I’m sorry if I come off like that kind of cynical gamer. The salt really started with SoulCalibur V’s changes and ever since then anything that looks like a shameless appeal to a certain player base rubs me the wrong way, either for something more complicated or less.
And maybe I need more time with the game, I’d certainly get it for $40. It’s a cool DC product overall.
I really hope there’s a way to turn off that wager/QTE shit in the final game. Its reminding of Budokai 3 all over again. Not a fan of QTE’s is serious, competitive fighting games
Let’s just say I had the same feeling with Battlefield having indoor maps and deathmatch modes for the CoD crowd. I’m just against that sort of thing when it doesn’t add anything for me.
NRS’s gameplay design focus has always been more about creating flashy cinematic moments first, solid mechanics second. They might want to make a carefully crafted game designed for high-level competitive play nowadays, but they don’t seem to have such a good grasp on how to do that, given that Wager exists and they failed Airdashing 101.
Protip: If you’re going to try to be witty, at least get your chronology right.
DICE also knew that short of a disaster, the normal Battlefield heads would buy their game regardless. Thus they branch out and try to get extra buyers.
The loyal heads may not be 100% behind but they still got all the shit that made Battlefield the game they play in the first place. You can’t just continue to sell games for one dedicated player base anymore. It’s just not cost-effective.
Games by committee lead to the most homogenized era of gaming. If companies don’t wanna eat from dollar menu’s I’d advise they scale back on the Super Bowl ads.
First of all NRS =/= Midway Chicago. Sooo, by always you mean just MK9. got it. And calling MK9 anything less than competitive is just…wrong. 3rd year at EVO and despite a few bugs, its clearly one of the best built competitive games of this console generation as its kept a solid community going for a while. and NRS has taken so much of the criticism from MK fans and fixed or improved upon it for Injustice.
Your opinion on how they make a fighting game is whatever it is, saying they don’t know how to make a competitive game because they do things differently than games you typically enjoy is not a way to make an argument.
Unfortunately it’s too late for that shit now, especially with a new generation of consoles looming.
It’s now on producers to try and gain maximum revenue from as many different sources as possible. There’s really nothing to be done about it at this point. As the prices and costs to produce games go up, the sales remain the same if not drop slightly. Eventually things will just…collapse.
ehhhh I don’t like the a game is competitive because it is played competitively logic or it’s more competitive because it’s at EVO. Anything and everything could be competitive regardless of design. Case in point, DMC (a single player game) had a competitive scene.
Not at all agreeing with Ges on NRS/MK9 not being a competitive game. If people are playing it and trying to be better than everyone else, it’s competitive.
Funny thing is, it isn’t. I carefully word my blogs/posts so that any and all commentaries are understood to be my own and under no circumstance do I claim ultimate knowledge on any sort of thing. If you get that from my posts than I’m sorry. Do I assert my views confidently, yes - but not from some high ground, everything I say comes from observations, perspective, personal tastes yadda yadda. The blog itself is even tagged with my ‘Opinion Time’ category.
So to be clear, I don’t aim to speak in absolutes. However, I won’t back down from explaining myself where warranted since I believe in my stance. It’s really all you can ask for as far as online interaction goes. I don’t flame, I don’t troll, I argue in good faith, and I respect well made counter-arguments.
