Take your time Ian. I know you want it done as much as the rest of us fans. But I’d rather wait for a great film than you rush out an unfinished one.
See you at EVO!!

No rushes here Ian, I just rewatch Dogface’s EVo commentary ( plus the one with OHT) and the shortcut. Take your time.
Ian-
Thanks for taking the time to respond. I was just giving my honest opinion even though most of it is probably just my own disappointment of having to wait longer coming through… I totally think you deserve to get everything you can from your movie, including the advantages that come from having your movie appear in film festivals. I guess I also didn’t think about how you did release the short cut early as opposed to making everyone wait till the end, which you didn’t have to do, and that is appreciated. Well…could we at least get some more kickstarter updates??
There was one thing I do want to clarify again with respect to this and a few of the comments afterward (funny, I was actually listening to an old dogface show on the bus when I read that, haha)-
I was never suggesting that Ian FINISH the movie faster, rush the completion or anything like that. I completely agree that waiting for it to be done right is always better than getting it faster. My only disappointment came from reading that the movie would be /already/ finished, but it would still take almost another year to come out because of the film festival rules.
Hello and thank you Ian for your efforts. Good luck and hope things work out well at the festivals. Looking forward to seeing this film
I apologize in advance for the following off topic question, but I remember reading a thread about another fighting game documentary that had a fairly long delay, right here in the forums. I forgot the name of it and was wondering if anyone here can refresh my memory as to which film I may be thinking off? I am not sure whether it is already out or not. It MAY have been about Justin Wong, but I honestly can’t remember
Indeed I think that is it. Thanks Peter.
+1 except that I won’t make it to EVO (sadface).
Hey guys,
Thanks again for the continued support of the film, I know it’s taking longer than originally expected. If anyone is interested I’ve set up the I Got Next shop:
http://www.igotnextmovie.com/shop.html
Currently I’m only doing a pre-sale on the I Got Next Logo shirts, which you can get at Evo this year, the sale is running from June 11th to June 30th. After that the shop will reopen on the 13th (with new merchandise to come in the future), for regular shipping services. So if you guys are interested in some IGN merch or helping out the film, check out the link.
I’ve also created a facebook page to compliment the twitter updates:
The short cut was awesome, but I have to say, Gootecks seems to be a little disillusioned, not sure if that’s just me. Keeps talking about how he can provide for himself through SF, but I don’t know what he thinks he’s gonna do for a living after he hits the point where his reflexes have declined so much that he won’t be able to compete at a high tier any more. Work at McDick’s for life?
Alex Valle is in his 30’s, Daigo is 29, and there are top ST players who are 40. As long as Gootecks keeps racking up 1st place finishes at major after major, I believe he’ll be just fine. That is not even to mention how much money he is likely making off big bet money matches with other top CA players.
i’m confused
i don’t think you know who gootecks is
or he could just
start
Cmon guys winning isn’t everything. Someone even took the time to create a website named after him.
Yea… that doesn’t happen.
I mean shit, even Daigo has a real job and he’s far more succesful than Gootecks.
updates?
Not sure if I missed this in the short cut (rewatched recently), but I didn’t notice any direct reference to this site in the movie, which I figured would have been a cool thing to work in if possible. I think it was mentioned as “SRK” once, but that’s not really “giving the community more exposure” as you stated Ian. The thing is as it is right now, it’ll give competitive gaming more exposure, which is of course a GREAT thing, but not this community directly. I’m sure it’ll inspire some people to pick up the game, but they won’t know where to go for tips.
Just a suggestion though, as I fully understand that it could be hard to work in a way to “pimp” this community in the film, but if possible I don’t think it could hurt.
Of course if I DID somehow miss it and it’s already in there, ignore this post.
So are you going to work in Evo2k10 footage or is it too late?
Any word on those online screenings?
Sorry! I’ve been pretty swamped lately. The movie is still moving forward. Lots of exciting things are happening that I can’t say too much about yet. Either way I’ll be submitting to festivals in the coming months, I’ll let you guys know how that turns out.
You’re right, SRK wasn’t a feature of the short cut of the film. I did ask players about it in interviews in the hopes that I could work it into the film. Realistically, working something in to the film that’s abstract, like a forum where players go to share knowledge, is difficult, but definitely possible. I can’t claim that the film is still as “community” centered as I originally intended. The film, as you guys may have been able to tell from my comments, the teaser trailer back in December, or the short cut, has shifted it’s focus.
Originally I planned on doing something that gave a broad overview of the community, but now the film has grown to something that I think has much more mainstream and lasting appeal. I Got Next focuses on Ryan, Mike, Justin and Joe and their struggles and obstacles, so it becomes more of a personal story, although it paints a picture of the community (in broad strokes).
To bring people who are outside the community in, to get them interested, in my mind, you have to start simply by connecting them with people they can empathize or associate with. So in a way, this is a different approach to the same idea of exposing people to SRK directly. For instance, if people enjoyed I Got Next and want to learn more, the first thing they would do is start to research the players they’re interested, or find out more about the community and tournaments that surrounds them and inevitably they would be led here, since this is THE hub for fighting games on the internet.
Also, the feature-length cut has a long segment on EVO2K9, which brings in the Cannons and Seth Killian, so even though SRK is not directly talked about, people will find their way here if they want to get more involved.
Yes, I was at EVO2010 this year, it was great seeing everyone. Big thanks to anyone who came up and said hello or discussed the movie! I shot some footage at EVO this year that will sneak its way in to the end. Still trying to work things out with the screenings.
I know everyone have been waiting patiently, it’s been over a year (!) since the first trailer came out, thanks again for keeping with me so long. Things are moving along steadily, here is a deleted segment I just posted that unfortunately didn’t fit into the film.
