Another update, happystickperson who is putting on a street fighter inspired art show and tournament later this February called bloody knuckles (http://www.bloody-knuckles.com/), is screening the short cut of I Got Next at the event if anyone is interested in showing their support or checking it out. Bloody Knuckles is looking to be a really exciting event a la Gallery Nucleus: http://www.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=222889.
Thanks very much Ian.
I know I’m (selfishly) a bit disappointed about the delay of the release, but I completely understand. I’m sure I’d do the same if I was in your position.
I’m still really excited for this and I can’t wait. Even if the footage will be a bit old by the time I get a copy, you are immortalizing a very exciting time for the FGC (this is like a renaissance period imho with so many new titles coming out and so much hype).
Good luck ian. I hope you win sw by sw.
Lol at thinking documentaries happen in real time. This documentary is not just for the community. Documentaries at best are an explanation and a snapshot of one particular community at that point in time. That footage IS relevant because its going to show the progress that Evo made, the importance of a new game to the community and the results of thatrelease of the game into the community.
Maybe its just me, but I believe that Ian has essentially captured the rise of Street Fighter 4 in America with this documentary.
I know its about the FGC and good shit to Ian.
Can’t believe I missed that bloody knuckles event, i work right by there… FOOOOOK.
manman, come to the one on the 28th dawg!
Man, you guys are all a lot more patient than me. I feel like I threw money (however modest my donation was) at the ocean…oh well, by the time this comes out, let’s hope it’s still relevant and worth watching.
Yeah man, my name is up as the SECOND person to donate to Ian and this project. I threw it $25, which isn’t a lot, but you feel that a lot more than $5. $25 is a brand new JLF.
I don’t feel cheated at all, but I agree that I had my hopes up and the delay does feel disappointing.
But I also agree with Ian that I would probably have done the exact same thing if I was in his shoes.
Food for thought.
I Got Next still sounds like a street basketball or WNBA movie
To the guys who think it’s irrelevent because it’s ‘dated’–so was WWII. Guess what? Many WWII movies are considered classics.
This movie is about history. It’s about the Street Fighter renaissaince. Give it a chance.
just finished watching the shortcut version, cant wait for the full one. I think you have a solid film here, and I hope it brings you a lot of exposure and bigger and better things.
ok… let me start by saying that I really hate to be a voice of any negativity, because I really think Ian’s work is great- the short cut was amazing, and I’m really looking forward to the final cut. I know he’s put a lot of his own time and money toward this project, and he deserves to get as much out of it as he can.
That said, is it only me that thinks that maybe there should be a little more of an obligation to the fans who donated their own money, especially under the impression that it had to be funded by a certain date, and thinking that it would be released this spring? But instead we have to wait a year to honor a stipulation of some film festivals?.. I’m not saying that people (myself included) wouldn’t have still donated if we knew this, it just doesn’t seem right to me. I donated to support the project and that doesn’t really change, but it was also because I thought people donating would help everything move forward more quickly. Over a year delay, plus no kickstarter content updates since feb… Just a little disappointing I guess.
I still wish good luck for the project and am really looking forward to seeing it when we can.
since it was a donation there is absolutely no obligation to finish by a certain time. and besides do you really think he’s doing this for you are any one else? Hell no.
Well, I agree with your first statement, although If you read what I wrote I actually never said anything that contradicts that. For one thing when he finishes and when he releases are two different things, but even if you neglect that- I would completely agree with you. This is his project and he’s free to do what he wants with it, just like it was everyone’s money and they were free to donate or not. All I’m really saying is that, the fact that the project will be DONE already but not release until a year after it’s finished to honor some film festival rules is disappointing. I will admit that obligation was probably not the right word to use- what I meant was that, the fans didn’t have to give their own money to help but they did- probably for many reasons. Just to be nice, to support him, to support the community, whatever- and it would be cool if that same thought was shown back, and he said forget the film festival rules these guys supported me, and I want to return the favor by giving them what they contributed toward and have been waiting patiently for.
As you can see I didn’t rage out and make a big deal over it, I just find it disappointing. I can understand and appreciate the fact that he has been working on this project for a long time and probably does want to (and deserves) to get more out of it than just a release to the fans.
As for your second statement, I think even Ian would say you’re dead wrong on that, haha. I don’t think he’s doing it for me specifically- but yes, I do think part of the reason he’s doing it IS for the community as a whole. If he was only in it for himself the promotion, distribution, level of feedback asked for/incorporated from the community would be a lot different.
A few things to talk about. GAMME in Florida this June recently fell through. If anyone was looking forward to catching a screening of the film, I’m really sorry. I’m looking to set up other screenings for you guys.
If you read through this thread or any of the interviews that I’ve done in the past, I’m pretty transparent on my motivations. One of my main reasons for doing this documentary (sorry for sounding like a broken record) is because I really love this community and want to contribute something meaningful to it. Of course as I had listed on the last page, the documentary is a great way for me, having recently graduated from college, to move forward with my career and get some exposure as well, but that doesn’t mean it’s my only motivation.
Hey manman,
Sorry again for the delay of the film, I know it really sucks since you guys have helped me out monetarily and are so invested emotionally in the project. I’m working hard on creating the best product possible. I want to address two things though: expectations of delivery and why I’m bringing it to festivals, just so I’m completely transparent for you guys.
So first off, I’m super grateful for all the support that I received, I’m surprised though when I read things like
because I released the 45 minute short cut, for free (relatively on time) so I could take my time to complete the feature length cut of the film and make it the best possible film it can be. I hope that you guys see I’m coming from a genuine place and that I didn’t have to release anything until the feature length cut was ready to come out, but I wanted to give something to the community because I know your wait would be a long one.
Second thing is the festivals. I think three things will come from bringing this film to festivals. First, there will be more exposure for the film, rather than releasing it straight to DVD, which means more exposure for the community and for players looking to make something out of playing the game. Second that helps me personally because it allows me to get criticism on the film from professionals, develop contacts and get personal exposure. Once the film gets some critique at these festivals, I can tighten it up before a final release, so you guys get the best final product. So I just want to lay that out there so you guys know where I’m coming from.
