isn’t OP the guy who was just arrested for breaking things at a tourney in Columbus?
Spooky didn’t really explain it, more like he said “I don’t really know the whole story about what happened.” To his credit, all he said in approval of it was (to the TO) “It’s your tournament, do what you want.” It wasn’t his call, and he shouldn’t get blamed for it.
Justin didn’t pick who he played against, but he did get to decide that he wasn’t going to play PR Rog because they’re friends, even though PR Rog was his match according to the bracket.
Sits down by the campfire and eagerly waits for story time
I think it’s pretty clear that if the fighting game community wants their scene legitimized and acknowledged by corporate backers, this kind of shit can’t fly. The TOs clearly dropped the ball on this one, and if I were EVO, I would think twice about having PowerUp in their line-up of qualifiers next year.
Stories pl0x
I’ve seen this happen tons of times. One that stands out is Final Round XII, when JWong was not in town the first day. He arrived at midnight and played his match. But basically he should have been long disqualified, and anyone else would have been.
Yipes was in my pool at this past Final Round. They waited nearly 3 hours for him to play his first match. To be fair, it was up to the person running the bracket to disqualify him. And also the guy who was opponent was willing to wait for him.
Still, anyone else would have been disqualified.
Story time?! Yes! sits
A judge tripped over the extension cord. What made matters worse was that it was the last match of the pool (1-1) and there was absolutely no way in hell they could have recreated a match that even 100%. It’s impossible. What was crazy was that all parties in question agreed to start the match from where it left off. I think the way they had it was that Rog had all 3 characters (health down some) with no X while gilty had 2 characters (Sent’s dead) with X. Crazy shit.
things like this have been happening in the SF community since SF2. Who are you to judge an entire community for something you bring no examples of while everyone knows the SF community does it all the time?
…yeah that didn’t happen…
The TO fucked up and unplugged the ps3 with his foot while pacing back and forth They then restarted the match killing off the characters that were dead for both players, WHICH both players agreed was fair. Stop talking out your ass.
A goddamn shame…
Yeah, signing on to this being nothing new.
Hell, I drove Arturo to a Break tourney once, and he was kept in the winners bracket while I got put in losers right off the bat. Ended up getting 2nd anyway, but you know…
West Coast Warzone is infamous for rigging brackets, and at the last one Kai even had to straight up say on the stream that they “rearrange things to give you the most entertaining matches” or something approximate.
There are tons of other examples all around. Evo seeding in the early years was hilarious - #capcom heads with a piece of paper writing the names of people they knew, regardless of how good they were at the game. Then again, I’m not so sure that’s worse than the current system where you have Justin letting his friends get more points…
The FGC has always had a very lax attitude toward corruption, and it’s going to bite them in the ass sooner or later. This is something I’ve wanted to make an effort thread about for awhile now…reminder that a gambling scandal came the closest anything ever has to killing major-league baseball.
They rigged the MVC3 bracket too. Floe didn’t want to play Jwong during top 8 so they swap things around to make them meet in winners final.
this is pretty upsetting… all Evo points obtained at this tourney should be discarded
lol more sad that people think shit like this doesnt go down more often. Hell mr wizard sent me PMs before talking about banning me from EVO etc when I was talking about the shady shit they have done there as well. Just like whatever dude I dont go to tournaments anymore anyway so whats banning me from EVO gonna do?
Anyway yea there are politics even in video games. And if you are friends with people who run tournaments your chance of placing will always be better.
I’m personally not surprised. What sucks is that I am not, and that is sad part.
I watched a bit of Power-up and it was straight up said that they set the brackets up so the top players don’t play each other early on. You CAN argue that if a player was really good it wouldn’t matter, but that gives the better players easier rides in the beginning. In other words, lesser known players have to go through more mental stress than the “Big Timers”. Yea it sounds like a silly notion, but after 8 hours of that you get worn out.
I remember Midwest Championship/Classic in '09. My friend had to wait 15-20 minutes for his opponent to show up (Knives I think). Meanwhile is “posse” kept insisting he was coming. My friend didn’t mind, but that’s cause he’s a stand up person and just wanted to play some SF4. However, the situation was bull. There are rules in place and the tourney runners need the guts to actually DQ their buddies. They also shouldn’t be IN the tournament. That is a huge conflict of interest. Any small tourney I’ve run I always am not in. My only stipulation is that I want to play the winner after, and that is it.
I guess because these tournaments aren’t really businesses, but labors of passion that the rules are more likely bound to be broken. IT does not make it ok though, nor does it paint a good image of the scene. If I ran that ship I’d be a strict ass-hole. You gotta be in those events. Once you start bending the whole situation goes to hell.
Wow have the majority of people on SRK really become this stupid that they think this kinda thing is “shady”? Grow the fuck up. This is called floating and has been going on as long as there have been tourneys. No one wants to travel to a tourney and just play people they play all the time when they could easily be switched to play someone they don’t regularly play against.
If it’s the very first round of brackets and you both traveled to the tournament I see no problem with it.
In top 8 and just because you don’t want to?
Seeding<>Changing the brackets at the top 8 phase.
When the brackets are created, that kind of thing is fine, like trying to divide zipcodes up as much as possible, but once the brackets are set, those are the brackets. Switching your opponent because you don’t want to face them in top 8 is complete bullshit, obviously.
