So I was watching the PowerUp 2011 stream gettin’ hype for SSF4, and the first match was to be Jwong vs PR Rog. Out of nowhere, someone was talking to Sp00ky about how Jwong didn’t want to play PR Rog and wanted to play Wolfkrone. After a confusing exchange and outrage from the chat, they decided that they would flip a coin to determine whether Jwong would play Inthul or Wolfkrone.
Uhhh. What? What kind of tournament lets you pick your opponent?
Is this okay? Does this happen a lot?
If I were Inthul right now I’d be incredibly pissed. The bracket had Jwong set to play PR Rog. Sure, what the tournament organizer says is what goes, but it really discourages me from attending any tournaments in the future if this stuff is commonplace.
You don’t realize how shady these people are by now
Another incident that happened with PR Balrog was at FR he was playing gilty and during the match to determine who would make it in the top 16 in Marvel 3, some mysteriously “tripped over the cord” and rather than play the match again from the start, noel brown, ricky, and the rest of the Illuminati tried to recreate the match as it was right before the power got cut out on the station, which is impossible.
Stuff like this does happen a lot at big events… not sure why but it’s fucking ridiculous yet no one seems to want to call people on it when it happens and just go with the flow.
Maybe there’s more to being a top player than just being good at games…
Any other good stories about shady things happening at tournaments? This might be a good thread to share them.
Worst part about all this is that seeding for Evo is on the line at PowerUp. Credibility is going out the window very very fast. So much for new players having a chance when the top players get favors like this. Shady things have always happened, but when shady things happen ON STREAM for everyone to see, it makes us all look bad.
I guess for now I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume it’s a weird as hell misunderstanding, but my trust is waning.
Justin said he “didn’t want to play Eduardo [PR Rog, right?]”, so they flipped a coin to figure out which of the other two people in winners he would play, pretty much exactly like the OP says. I don’t think anyone thinks it’s okay.
I heard the same thing as well, but I still want to find out the entire story. If it did go down like that, then it’s fucked up.
Does this happen alot? No. Should this discourage you from attending a tournament? No. Should Inthul be mad? No because at the end of the day, he played the match and should know what’s going down better than anyone watching from home.
We’ll see what happens when the aftermath gets posted.
