I can't believe what I just saw. (Shady Tournament Stuff)

So I was watching the PowerUp 2011 stream gettin’ hype for SSF4, and the first match was to be Jwong vs PR Rog. Out of nowhere, someone was talking to Sp00ky about how Jwong didn’t want to play PR Rog and wanted to play Wolfkrone. After a confusing exchange and outrage from the chat, they decided that they would flip a coin to determine whether Jwong would play Inthul or Wolfkrone.

Uhhh. What? What kind of tournament lets you pick your opponent?

Is this okay? Does this happen a lot?

If I were Inthul right now I’d be incredibly pissed. The bracket had Jwong set to play PR Rog. Sure, what the tournament organizer says is what goes, but it really discourages me from attending any tournaments in the future if this stuff is commonplace.

You don’t realize how shady these people are by now

Another incident that happened with PR Balrog was at FR he was playing gilty and during the match to determine who would make it in the top 16 in Marvel 3, some mysteriously “tripped over the cord” and rather than play the match again from the start, noel brown, ricky, and the rest of the Illuminati tried to recreate the match as it was right before the power got cut out on the station, which is impossible.

Stuff like this does happen a lot at big events… not sure why but it’s fucking ridiculous yet no one seems to want to call people on it when it happens and just go with the flow.

Maybe there’s more to being a top player than just being good at games…

Any other good stories about shady things happening at tournaments? This might be a good thread to share them.

Worst part about all this is that seeding for Evo is on the line at PowerUp. Credibility is going out the window very very fast. So much for new players having a chance when the top players get favors like this. Shady things have always happened, but when shady things happen ON STREAM for everyone to see, it makes us all look bad.

I guess for now I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume it’s a weird as hell misunderstanding, but my trust is waning.

wtf!?

no wonder why the usa is still shit against the japanese

damn, I missed the part about the coin flip/it just seems wrong.

I wouldn’t assume that every tournament is as poorly run as PowerUP.

Also, how was the mental hospital?

Justin said he “didn’t want to play Eduardo [PR Rog, right?]”, so they flipped a coin to figure out which of the other two people in winners he would play, pretty much exactly like the OP says. I don’t think anyone thinks it’s okay.

Didn’t smash get pulled from mlg due to m2k pulling similar?

Great look, guys.

Yeah, that is shady as hell and not a good look.

UNACCEPTABLE! /Wolverine

WTF…that really happened?
On an evo qualifier tourney?

Blasphemy.

scrubtastic :coffee:

It’s a good thing PowerUp isn’t run by Shang Tsung.

I heard the same thing as well, but I still want to find out the entire story. If it did go down like that, then it’s fucked up.

Does this happen alot? No. Should this discourage you from attending a tournament? No. Should Inthul be mad? No because at the end of the day, he played the match and should know what’s going down better than anyone watching from home.

We’ll see what happens when the aftermath gets posted.

I remember Sabin getting on Daigo for getting preferential treatment due to his superstar status, but apparently that shit works for Americans too.

Stay classy, fighting game tournament runners.

Next match will be…Sleazoid! Versus…Filipino Champ and Ricky Ortiz! Yeah, we got 1v2 to work in MvC3 just for you.

Dont forget on Friday when they switched loser’s finals in team MvC3 from 2/3 to 3/5.

If it is how it seems to be:

  1. Evo should erase Justin’s current seeding points, or automatically put him in the lowest seed possible.

  2. EG should issue some form of reprimand, because this looks bad on them too.

  3. PowerUp should not be an Evo qualifier next year.

If Evo wants the FGC to be legitimized, this should be taken seriously.

yeah i was wondering about that and finally got a straight answer

winners finals was 3/5

but i guess they agreed that losers would be 2/3

and then after the other team won justin complained and his good friend noel brown who was running the tournament changed it to 3/5

noel brown runs power up? that explains alot…

That explains shit soooo much now…
