How to Stop Worrying and Love the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth - The Ultimate Doctor Strange Thread

I think no one’s given him a superserious answer yet…trollface. I may be a new, crappy Strange, BUT I’ve done my research and my share of matches, so I’m not completely inept at answering this. Ranged game is his neutral game, that and catching jumpers (cr.M and his surprisingly decent air-to-airs). Once you have an avocado out they have to sit still and enjoy it for a while. If they get too eager and go for some cheeky buttons (or perhaps high-durability projectiles), throw a pillar on them, and i you’re feeling randy, XFC and get a kill from it.

He has damage like crazy, but tiny little T-Rex arms, so you better have a kickass confirm. Otherwise, chip them until they’re reckless, then when they expect to block, teleport M, and catch them walking into you, then combos. Combos are rare, but once they happen, you’ve got them. I actually cannot do FoF loops, don’t know how or why, but even I can get mid 700ks on them once I get a hit in. That, and Strange was some of the best wakeup mixups I’ve seen (I got a few from youtubing early match vids of Ryan Hunter, people don’t know how to block them, fun stuff).

strange should in theory carry you to the corner and get enough meter for a level 3 almost every time. any combo with level 3 is easily over 1mil. most strange teams should be doing 1mil with 1-2 meters anyways.

learn fof loop. its worth it, plus it looks really cool

I know, I got distracted (Devil May Cry HD collection = <3)

What’s a good sequence for practicing the timing? I remember someone posted it around here before, but I can’t seem to find the post.

important part to me is just learning spacing and height restrictions. once you learn that then you can kinda adjust on the fly to how many flames you can get and recorrect it.

basically all i did was impact palm loop in corner then sH , fH xx fof , fH , S etc

strange’s pre-super damage is comparable to zero/spencer

literally every combo, almost every confirm, should do 1,000,000+

it helps greatly if you have an assist that sets up easy FoF loops. Hidden missiles for instance allows you to traverse 1 full screen and as well sets up FoF loops rather easily.

Lolwut. If you’re talking about combo damage, then that’s crazy because he can do 1 mil with FoF and 1 assist and still be at meter advantage. You’re job is to find a way to get a clean hit with or without assist and everything will follow after. Granted it’s not easy but the team he listed Joe/Strange/Task will certainly help. Task arrows and Joe bombs to activate counter super could be very very deadly.

After playing Combofiend, and my brazilian fgc friends too, I settled down, guys.

I was doing better with Strange on point than anywhere else.

I got 17th place. Lost to Comboman70 twice in our pool, 3-2 each set. Dropped pivotal stuff on each set’s decisive game (the tournament ran late, and I didnt sleep the previous day helping my friend SuperChampz with the stream, so I was awake for 30 hours by then) and lost the match.

howeeeever, people got hype for Strange when I killed Hulk with ToDs, and also when I fought a Dark Phoenix and won the set by xfactoring from blockstring into seven rings of raggadorr :333

too bad nothing went on stream

Noooooooo!!

yeah, there were sick matches, but nothing on stream…

only me as a commentator for the top16 and a part of pool-play

Gonna do the long-awaited Dr. Strange tutorial whenever I have the time. Everyone, feel free to give me a shout via PM or whatever if you would like to see something in particular. Think of this as a community project done by the Strange forums on SRK to educated the masses with the following message: Our character is NOT ass. Then we proceed to show how best to play him and whatnot, and why he is dabes.

Stuff I’m gonna include for sure:

  • basic to advanced BnBs (including the FoF loop and its harder variations)
  • movement (or lack thereof)
  • zoning
  • assist choice
  • team order
  • mixups (might need a little help with this one, as I’m sure you guys are doing your own thing with your teams and I would like your ideas on this one-- especially if it applies to a certain assist type in general so it has wide coverage)
  • Spell of Vishanti DHC and XF kill combos
  • Flames of the Faltine properties and application (can go under the ‘mixups’ section)
  • other stuff I can’t name off the top of my head at the moment.

Don’t go too crazy on the combo section (as some tends to do) Basic FoF loop and how to transition to it from his other B&B should be enough.

For assist synergy show how they help convert to more FoF from B&B

I think the only thing we need to develop is to use graces during neutral game…

at least I never use nor have seen anyone using graces mid-match

I used to use orbs but now they just mess up my combo when I land a random hit.

Is my strange the worst defensive strange in this forum? I just end up mashing so much when people get close to me (although I tend to mash with everyone). I have absolutely no idea what to do besides fH xx swords but that doesn’t work against a few characters and s those characters I’m just praying for a random hit.

When in doubt, block. Don’t try and open them up with Strange. Play his meta, and let them open themselves up. Ive been playing a couple Stranges online recently and the number one thing I see wrong is they are all wayyyyy too aggressive with the teles and think he’s some gimpy Magneto. If they can’t confirm from where they are on the screen, I play keep away the entire time and wait until they eat an EoA or Hidden Missiles on the ground, then confirm into whatever, typically a dead character after all the chip and whatnot. Patience is seriously a virtue with this character.

Blocking is not an option for a lot of players in this game. As in it takes too much skill to do that. In a game where mix ups are pretty much unseeable it is best to put yourself in a position where you don’t have to block. And that part is just too hard for strange when they actually get inside of his defensive bubble.

Fair enough. That being said, I personally feel better blocking than pressing buttons.

Thanks guys, Im learning the FoF loop.

I’m constantly blocking with Strange.

Also, I try to have a yellow grace on screen in-case I am heavily getting rushed down.

Just superjump, FoF it, teleport.

It’ll get the pressure off you for a little while.

Another thing: Frank’s pie goes through Strange’s EoA and hits him making it completely useless against pie.

I noticed that Tenboss uses raw FoF’s a bit in his neutral. I’m trying to get into doing that.

Also, a lot of people tend to not use DoD L; but it’s really good for Strange’s neutral.

Eye, raw FoF, IP xx any projectile or Grace is a very good basic zoning pattern. Try to get used to using Bolts (on point) as well vs tridash characters; it makes their approach even more difficult especially if you have the aforementioned projectiles already out.

I wish to state the random experiences of a new Strange player, and ask for thoughts. Mostly matchups, but there is no real matchup thread it seems, so they’re going here.

I am playing often against a Chris main, just wanted to mention how WEIRD that matchup is. Eye is nearly worthless, his magnum goes straight through it, Chris’s own control tool also becomes kinda derp against strange, grenades don’t do shit unless Chris’s already in there. Magnum pierces Mystic Sword M, but the slow startup of magnum lets mystic sword win if I start spamming it a few frames before he can magnum. It seems the way to fight him is either play this game of extremely silly ranged rock/paper/scissors, or just superjump up and yellow grace like crazy, which is really scrubby-feeling, but overall very rewarding against him.

Other odd one, Ghost Rider, his whip goes through eye at times. And the coverage of his whip (nothing great point blank or below him, but decent normal-jump AAs and good range) makes teleporting aggro seem a lot more effective on that particular matchup, that and superjumping randomly. I feel…well, wrong playing against GR, everything I do against other characters doesn’t quite work.

And other matchups I’ve learned, Felicia is annoying as hell, and Chun and Tron seem to be Strange’s bitch. I’m finding Doom a joy to fight with Strange as well.

And is it just me, or do Strange combos work way differently on Sentinel?
