nd. Well it could also be that I straight suck. I’m going to try the 4 frame safe jump. Meaty FP clap isn’t as good as I think it is although it is pretty damned good.
This is why I wish we had individual threads for characters because not everyone wants to see a page of guile discussion and inevitably people eventually do want to learn the matchupk it may be hard to find.
Couple of pointers. Do not use focus attack to absorb fireballs unless 1/2 screen away or greater. His recovery is too quick and he can often fierce punch u out of your focus.
Also, when full screen away when the sonic boom comes out, if he walks forward to follow a light one, u are going to need to just hold that. Leap attack will trade with his normal and not in your favor and if u try to jump over u will eat a simple anti air. Even If u emoty jump.
Now from about half screen and slightly better, emoty jumping can be very effective. Hugo has a deceptive hurtbox on emoty jumps and u can punish whiffed anti airs with SPD and quite possibly other command grabs although I go for the simple punish (SPD) into clap shenanigans. (Whiff mp/meaty HP if I think I can get away with it.)
Let it be known that meaty fp clap straight loses to flash kick so if it doesn , it’d because your opponent just doesn’t known
Lastly always os your backbreaker out ultra 2 when utilizing your mixup on his wake up. Both catch guile backdashes from anywhere on screen
Meaty Fp clap usually loses to any reversal that’s why we use Mp clap to bait reversals. And if you don’t think they’ll reversal you just throw them or overhead etc.
Agreed. I just feel like when they catch on, they will start keeping their reversal safe with fadc backdash. (especially vs zoners since they build meter fairly well).
Also, is there a way to option select your mp clap to catch backdashes? I guess really it becomes this convoluted mix up game where u and your opponent are making really calculated guesses on wake up .
Against most online warriors or possibly players u only face once in a while, the whiff mp clap seems great. For me, I play in a scene where I challenge the same 12-15 guys in long sets. Most I feel I can outplay. But this particular guile and this one gouken player make me really work. The match ups are difficult, but I’m determined to make them as favorable as possible. I’d love to see some good Hugo vs guile/gouken work .
Only if the MP clap hits. If you intentionally make the MP clap whiff your sweep is going to come out and you’ll get punished. Good news is that sweep will catch Chun and Makoto’s back dash if you OS it.
Then again if you whiff MP clap, hold down back long enough to block a potential reversal, and then hit sweep, you might be able to both block a reversal and catch a back dash. The sweep will come out if you aren’t in block stun. If they reversal in time you’ll block it and the sweep won’t come out since you’ll be in block stun.
I’m sure the timing would be strict and it will be punished if they delay their reversal. And it probably won’t catch all back dashes if any since the sweep will be delayed by a few frames. Still worth exploiting.
Had more troubles today against a Vega that spammed Izuna drop. I could sometimes catch him on his way to the wall but when he was on top of me I didn’t know what to do. It doesn’t feel like ex BB would catch him.
Just tested it against Guile and Ryu and it works. You block if they wake up with delayed/reversal SRK or flash kick and will sweep them if they back dash. Mixed up with meaty HP clap will make shit real scary. I’ll try and record it.
After a SPD, MP clap, hold down back for a little bit and hit cr. MK. The timing isn’t specific so I can’t explain it.
yun, yang, hugo has been updated a bit.
I need some people to contribute to punishes n stuff if you like it a lot of work figuring this stuff out tho watching alucard helps me as well as testing for myself.
A slight delay. I had to record it with one hand and the other on the controller. But basically, after you whiff MP Clap, hold down back just long enough to block a potential reversal, and then hit cr.MK. If you hold down back and throw tech with cr.MK it’ll tech wake up throw if they want to be cheeky and catch a back dash.
It works if they use reversal timing or delayed reversal.
They can jump back out of it. If they mash jab you’ll block it.
But that’s just OS sweep. OS back breaker? OS SPD? OS Ultra Throw? Shit could get real ugly. If they stay still for a few frames you’ll still catch
HP Headbutt is punishable by Super and sometimes reversal LP Clap
Far EX Headbutt is punishable by light normals, cr.MP and Kara EX UT. Cancelling into L.Lariat as a punish only works from cr.LK.
Close EX Headbutt is punishable by light normals, cr.MP, Ultra 1, all spds and ultra throws if stand blocked.
Close EX Headbutt is punishable by light normals, cr.MP, Ultra 1, LP, MP, EX spd and EX Ultra throw if crouch blocked.
All buttslams are punishable by Ultra 1, LP, MP and HP SPD.
If you stand block buttslams while they’re descending, they can be -4 to -5, making it also punishable by cr.jab, EX SPD and EX UT.
Honda’s s.HK poke (-6 on block, -2 on hit) is punishable by cr.LP, st.LP and cr.LK on block and Ultra 1 on hit (spacing dependent).
I face a blanka who kept hopping around with that mix up hop and I couldn’t grab him. and his slide was unpunishable to on block. I tried moon salt press and that was unreachable all version. even ultra throw couldn’t catch him getting back up. I also had problems with Juri. they would just stay back constantly throwing fireballs and I couldn’t get in Hugo is a pain in the ass for me I truly thought about going back to hakan.
Honestly with Juri, what I usually do is stay fullscreen whiffing LK Lariat for insane meter building.
Juri’s fireballs don’t hit from fullscreen, so if they want to stop your meter building they have to try get closer, and you can just backdash and Lariat some more until you have as much meter as you want.
It’s not a perfect gameplan, since you still need to get in after you build however much meter you want, and have to contend with stuff like her Antiair Fireball still hitting you standing, but it doesn’t take very long at all to get like 3 bars, and then you can just EX Lariat FADC Backdash if you’re desperate or go for a Super punish.
