Anyone have advice on the chun matchup? I’m finding her pokes fast and difficult to deal with. Actually struggling quite a bit against her.
I agree chun li is a nightmare to deal with definatly need help here
Probably should put it in the character specific and set-ups thread but I’ll leave it here too in case you want to put anything in.[details=Spoiler]Some OS stuff I was testing, I could be really off on all these but they’re ideas.
Note these could vary because a lot of them I tested with Cr.Mk dash Meaty Clap which changes depending on where/when the Cr.mk hits I believe.
Rufus: Meaty Hp Clap OS Ex BB
-Beats Wake up Messiah/Snake strike (because some do it because damage)
-OS doesn’t activate against EX snake strike but you can block it
Lariat, Empty Jump DD+Mk OS Ex BB
-Beats Ex Messiah, Snake strike/Ex SS
-Regular SS gets hit out of the Air. Ex Gets BB
-Safe meaty
Rose: Meaty Clap OS Ex SPD
-Beats Ex Spirals (you can also just do meaty claps and block if you don’t want to try and risk a backdash)
-ONE time I had Ex Spd punish backdash but that was a fluke
Sakura: Meaty Clap OS Ex BB
-Beats Ex Srk (one time had him fly over her)
-Safe meaty
Deejay: Meaty Clap OS U2
-only putting this in because it beats EX rolling sobat lol
Bison: Meaty Clap OS Ex BB
-This one is really weird because depending on when you input the OS or the spacing you can beat/trade/whiff BB against EX Psycho Crusher
-Beats Ex Devils Reverse
-Can lose or trade with Ex Head Press
-Might not be worth it with all of Bison’s reversal options and just Meaty, block and react.
Lariat, Empty Jump DD+Mk
-Safe meaty
-If you don’t block Ex PC then you should beat it.
Balrog: Meaty Clap OS Ex BB
-Beats Ex Headbutt
-Safe Meaty
-Ex Armor moves will beat any meaty attempt
Honda: Meaty Clap OS Ex BB
-Beats Ex Headbutt, Ex Ochio, Ex Buttslam
-Safe Meaty
Cody: Lariat, Empty Jump DD+Mk
-Trades with Ex Criminal
-Passes through Zonk to give free punish and if it doesn’t it’s safe
-Gets hit by U2 but falls out for a punish
Experimental and needs tons of testing for this set-up because I got WAY too many different outcomes; Abel- Meaty Hp Clap OS UT (had VARYING degrees of catching or not catching rolls/backdashes)
[/details]
Thanks Shadow I’ll update the characters with these. I don’t think the set up thread is doing so well cause it not sticky
In the lab vs some more set-ups on Abel
Did the Lariat Knee set-up.
I got varying results based on when you do the knee
-Consistently traded vs ex Air throw Unless knee was done asap then it whiffed
-Doing this lost to Ex Tornado Throw
-Slightly delayed can beat Ex CoD but more often than not got hit
-Traded with Ex Air throw
-Made Ex Tornado whiff
-Armor cancel TT lost as well
-U1 beat it
All these set-ups pretty much could punish ex roll as well. I figured I would post about this since the meaty knee set-ups can be tricky and aren’t always perfect either.
I have no idea how to fight Juri. Getting in seems impossible and the only way iv been able to win is if the Juri got impatient.
What we really need is to figure out the gouken and sagat Match ups, its beyond frustrating
I need help figuring out these punishes cause I work at night and I can’t keep the testing going. We really need to figure out these. Juri, Poison, and Blanka seem to be the worst match up for hugo at the moment.
Blanka can hop around all day and Moonsalt Press won’t catch him on block
Juri can hold up to 2 fireballs so you have no idea when you can focus and even if u do focus threw them she can throw another one right after. it pisses me off. I try to get in tho before they can get a perfect position for zoning Hugo out. Then I just keep doing safe jumps and option selects after that.
Blanka seems really good for me.
- Trade every ball attempt with cr.MP
- SPD the slides
- After Ultra2 is filled, use it after defending/getting hit with a ball

half the cast is done with punishes I just got to go through threads and find the correct set ups for people. tho I need dhalsim ,cody, poison, zangief , akuma and a few more. I played Dan so I will be posting some things.
if it wasn’t for a few ppl in this forum and alucard vids I have a tough time feeling things out. cause I may have miss something if I don’t dbl check my notes.
so like what if the blanka doesn’t play like an idiot?
Blanka match is not that hard, stand lp, cr. lp stuffs horizontal balls, spd slides. And of blankas stuff is unsafe in hugos face. Just be lame and block.
I find POison to be difficult but no where near as difficult as Sagat or Chun Li or Guile… hell or even Deejay
My advice for poison is stay out of rang of her lows especially when using focus, also try to find that range where u can trade st mp with her fireball startup. I do fairly well although this match up is not one I’d like to see lol.
For Juri, I’d recommend getting away full screen and whiffing lariat for meter. Then jsut approach slowly. duck under the high fireballs, and just take your time with your approach.
A competent Deejay, idk. matchup seems difficult. similar with guile. ucan’t even empty jump sometimes. Making it very hard to space and react in this matchup.
Sagat, I try to stay right outside teh s HK range. crouch hi tiger shot and try to punish with cr MP if possible. tough matchup. when u get the knockdown definitely take advantage of meaty/whiff clap setups.
I main Sagat, I posted a thread that helps with the match-up.
I can’t seem to find it now though :s
EDIT:
Ah here it is, first page of this thread, can the OP ad it to the Sagat spoiler section on the first page please?
I’ve added more revisions after playing the match more!
I consider myself a very competent Sagat player, thought I’d share my match-up knowledge and what Hugo can do for Success.
This is a match that Hugo will lose more times than he will win, it’s just a basic design of the game. Slow high tigershots will give hugo huge problems.
-Max range St.hk by sagat can be counter poked with back HP(the elbow)
-High tiger shots recover slightly faster than low tigershots, so if you plan on FADCing through a fb punish, you’ll get better results with the low ts.
-EX Tk is completely safe from any punish, stay on your toes in case the sagat tries to neutral jump to bait your spd/throw
-All of Sagat’s uppercuts are 5 frames, so remember those 5 or better Safe jumps.
-TK is only safe if perfectly spaced, if you block it standing up, you have better frame advantage and have a great chance at spd.
-St.mp can stuff a lot of TS on start up, and the trades are heavily in your favour.
-Sagat extends his limbs far with his tiger shots, max range jump hp connecting should always combo into sweep at the right spacing.
-Do not jump at sagat unless you have the read or you’re empty jumping, his Kara game can take out hugo from 3/4 screen.
-Fadc through FB kara Ultra Throw is excellent in this match up
-Fadc forward or backward Tiger uppercut is minus 5
-Sagat’s cr.lk cr.lk string is NOT a true block string
-Sagat’s blocked cr.mk is punished by SPD
-If sagat isn’t throwing Fireballs, do not jump, this is when you’re being baited to jump.
-Sweep can often beat ts on start up, but you have to be on point.
-Sagat’s forward step kick hits low and it’s SAFE ON BLOCK, so don’t try to spd it.
-DO NOT test Sagat with an ex bar, one EX Tiger Uppercut leads into Ultra with relative ease against Hugo, full Ultra.
-Well timed ex lariat in good footsie range will beat LOW ts.
-EX TK has ZERO invincibility, and perfectly spaced cr.mp ir st.lp with beat it.
-DO NOT use jump hard kick for a FB punish, it will trade with Shots on the screen, J.mp and J.hp are far better.
You can tell if you’re playing a good sagat or a bad sagat. Bad Sagat’s are Tiger shot happy, they don’t do feints to throw you off and they don’t use the right Fb’s in the right situations.
If you face off against a sagat that utilizes SLOW tiger shots, he knows what he’s doing in the match up, do no jump over ANY slow tiger shots far away, ever. Leap attack the low ones, crouch the high ones, by the time the TS gets to Hugo Sagat is already recovered and can kara you out of the sky.
Bad Sagat’s will do anything possible and reckless to get out of the corner or a jam situation.
Good Sagat’s will be comfortable in the corner against a Hugo because they likely made you take a ton of Damage to get them there. In those situations you have to have an understanding of the normals sagat will use(St.hk, cr.mk, st.hp, cr.mp) so it’s up to you to use the optimal spacing and punishing.
Bad Sagat’s will waste bar on full screen tiger shots
Good Sagat’s will save the bar for FaDC, EX.TK and EX.TU punishes that lead into full ultra
I would also add in to sweep pretty much every opportunity given. Throws a high tiger shot, sweep. Tries to hit you with his Far HK to beat any focus or control the space in front sweep him it’s really whiff punishable (like Hugo whiff punishable)
Also I REALLY REALLY REALLY hate the fuerte match-up.
thought i was the only one.
yeah it sucks. I don’t even think in that match anymore. I just try to get the knockdown and go to town. i hate that move that has armor and he can flip on wakeup and grab u… messes up my meaty setups
In all of my SF4 history I’ve only played 4 Fuertes. No bullshit
Not sure if I’m the only one, but I really think the Viper matchup is in Hugo’s favor.
Viper spends 90% of her time in the air and ST.HP beats direct jump ins and flamekicks while you can EX backbreaker or U2 everything as long as you are on your feet forcing her to stay back and quake all day. But I really think Hugo wins when it comes to turtling, you just have to be aggressive at the right level against him because despite what some people might think he DOES have all day to sit back and wait lol
Edit: Just discovered something very interesting when fighting Akuma; You can actually do HK Backbreaker to go OVER his air fireballs and grab him as he stops and descends with correct spacing for 200 damage
What do you do if she just zones with ground pound? I found focus works ok but she usually comes out better off in the end because of Hugo’s speed and start up jump frames.
Jumping is never a good idea against quakes/groundpound anyway and Hugo’s forward dash isn’t completely terrible . I just stand my ground and focus dash forward through quakes getting closer and making them nervous, if they’re dumb, they’ll jump.
Only problem I have is that I can’t clap the way I want because of quakes lol
