Hori Hayabusa unboxing + mods!

Yeah, I still want to try out an LS-40 also. I feel silly in that I’ve been enjoying messing with sticks more than I’ve been actually using them lately. Just another hobby to waste time/money on, I suppose.

Really, I’m almost afraid to like it too much, as I’ll end up wanting to buy at least 1 more. I currently have a 360 Brawlstick, a Wii TE dual modded with a MC Cthulhu, a MAME cabinet I’m working on, and a project stick built from what started as Brawlstick leftovers and a PS1 padhack- all with modded JLF sticks.

I’ve replaced all of my joysticks with Hayabusa already.

I could see replacing the Hayabusa actuator with a jlf actuator if you are doing a lever mod to give you some more room if you didn’t like your shit so sensitive but you still wanted to reap the benefits of the levers… I may actually try this when I get home.

Okay, the front page review combined with my frustration at recent totally-the-stick-and-not-just-me execution errors convinced me to finally take the plunge on this. I’m still not sure if it’ll fit in a Cerberus-modded SCV TE, but here’s hoping! ( ´∀`)

@slawbrah - It will but you will need to do this…

Oh yeah, I guess I didn’t look at that image closely enough while skimming the thread earlier. Seems simple enough. I was mostly worried about the Cerberus’s PCB taking up too much room (most guides already tell you to remove a screw from the mount), but if that’s not an issue, I guess I’ve got nothing to worry about.

I used to have this issue. I have spent a decent amount of time working with every in production Japanese sticks except for the LS-33, LS-64 and JLW. If I go back to playing on stick I’ll probably pick up a Hayabusa based on the current recommendations.

I would like to try a JLW someday but I’m really happy with the Hayabusa so that may be a way’s off.

The JLW, according to most reviews, is most like the older American joysticks. It’s been recommended as a replacement for Happ/iL joysticks partly because of feel, partly because it fits into older American-style cabinets easier than most Japanese joysticks without all the modding needed to fit the control lever in comfortably.j

It is a pain-and-a-butt-and-a-half, however, to install the JLW in most modern joystick cases. You definitely need the Paradise Arcade universal mounting plate. I don’t know about clearance issues, though. The fact that the JLW was used in the SNES era Capcom CPS Fighter joystick makes me think clearance might not be an issue in an HRAP or TE joystick case. I can’t confirm that 100%, though. Somebody else needs to make the measurements there!

I got a JLW to install in a Hrap just fine with its default mount plate. i need to take the time and see how it mounts in a TE.

That’s good to hear!

Maybe it’s just the arcade cabinet issue then.
There’s no reason to reinvent something like joystick mounts again and again!
That’s one of the big things about the Hayabusa that makes me like the stick better and better… Yeah, they modelled it to a large point after the JLF but what’s the harm in keeping it compatible with standard equipment (balltops, dustwashers, springs, etc.) so long as they improve the actual stick performance!

That’s something I don’t like about the Seimitsu joysticks very much. If you get too far out of the orbit of the LS-32 or LS-56 you begin to encounter incompatibilities (springs, mounting plates, dustwashers, shaft covers) within the same manufacturer’s line! They may have standardized some things between the LS-32 and LS-40 (mounting plates, spring) but the shaftcovers don’t fit the LS-32… The LS-56 and LS-58 are virtually the same joystick but the LS-58 has a different spring and incompatible mounting plates… The LS-33 has its own unique parts; about the only thing that fits the LS-33 from the rest of the line is the LS-55/LS-56 PCB assembly… The entire line is like that and you have to be carefully educated in Seimitsu-ese before you order spare parts so that you don’t get incompatible pieces!

Nice to hear I was wrong about the JLW. A happy ending doesn’t always happen with older parts. I don’t think Hori had JLW’s in mind when the HRAP came along over 10 years after the CPS Fighting Stick. The JLW-series is carried by a shortening list of parts vendors as it is. akihabarashop.jp hasn’t bothered to list this joystick line for quite a while now. Paradise Arcade Shop still lists both but generally only has the bat top JLW model in-stock…

I bought a JLW (from Paradise Arcade, IIRC) and I really didn’t like it.

Not every Joystick is for everyone. To me the JLW is superior to the JLF but it has a slight retro feel.

@iNENDOi ah I haven’t had a day off from work in 20 days as of today, tomorrow will be 21 and I’m not sure when the next I’ll have off. I missed this post and the error, and yeah, I meant engage for sure.

Too tired lately :frowning:

Slapped a hayabusa on my Q4 and I’m in love with it. Now I’m tempted to replace all of my sticks with the Hayabusa

Go for it! That’s what I did

@Moonchilde - I feel your pain. Between work and trying to move I’ve barely had time for TT let alone to get some actual stick modding done and definitely no time for video games. Real life sucks sometimes.

Finally got my Hayabusa in and installed in my TE. The Hori joystick actually Feels nice.

@iNENDOi thanks for that tip about removing that extra plastic post.

I already did one minor mod to mine, I installed a hallow titanium JLF shaft in my Hayabusa.
I want to later do a LED install and there isn’t any LS-56 hallow shafts available.

I do notice that the black finish on the Hayabusa shaft can scrape off if you tried.

I did notice the nice packaging Hori does for the Hayabusa, the stickers and everything.
I just wish UPS was not so slow.

@Darksakul - How long did shipping take? It has only been taking about 3-4 days to me in Houston.

Spoiler

RGB LED Hayabusa incoming…
