aye i live on the west coast too. (Washington state)
something to be aware ofā¦ the first hit of feiās jab rekka (the one that recovers the fastest) is -4 on block. āwhy do I care?ā you askā¦ hondaās cr. lp has a 4 frame startup. if the rekka isnāt from max range, you can punish the first hit with cr. lp xx hhs. You wont get all of the hits, therefore, you wont be able to get the roundhouse, but its a meter-less punish that will make fei think twice about trying to abuse you with rekkas. If youāre arenāt that adept at hhs, at least practice punishing with the jab. Its more dmg than the chip you eat, although the dmg maybe small its a step in the right direction.
I will practice timing the jab after the first hit of rekka, i am about 70% consistent with jabxxHHS.I still have a long way to go. I was wondering, if he chooses to get the second rekka out, can he time to where we will trade hits or force a counter hit on me if I spam jabs? What are my options blocking a chicken wing? Should I chance using a meter for ex HB? Will lk. buttslam work after i block the chicken wing? Obviously Iāll be in more block stun because i am blocking low.
You should bear in mind that if you go for the punish the fei player can go for a second rekka and if u mis time the punish you are eating counter hit last two rekkas. Not really a risk I would be willing to take if Iām not confident in punishing that. Also properly spaced lp rekkas are safe, and most good fei longs know this range.
I play a footsie based match against fei long rarely nj.hp unless Iām lp rekka range. Any closer and fei can hit you with c.hp. Also I try to build meter as much as possible and whiff normals to bait the fei into trying to punish my whiffed oichos. Then EX headbutt and heās out and just lost 20%. EX headbutting through blockstrings is huge in this match because feiās like to keep pressure on using those lp rekkas, c.mp (has sick range and can lead to CH opportunities->full rekka), and df.mk (overhead). Anytime you feel pressured from fei go for an EX headbutt and if you donāt have the meter and expect him to press buttons go for a hp headbutt trade (if you miss youāre eating rekka combo though). Also, EX headbutt is always worth doing if you feel the need to, most times it will put you out of range to be punished by lp rekka, unless you have your back to the corner.
Basically donāt leave the ground, build meter by walking forward and doing hands, once you have the meter hold down back and EX headbutt anything he tries. I have played this match a surprisingly good amount of times and feel honda can really dominate fei.
Everything here has some warrant. Every match you ever play at a higher level is going to be footsie based. Everyone knows that if you jump at honda, youāre eating 160. so you need to be able/ comfortable winning matches when players donāt give you free aa hbās. St. HK is a godsend for honda on the ground. Donāt abuse it against fei though, its a free rekka punish on block if not max range. Its good to space yourself just outside of his cr. hp range, and if he whiffs any realistically punishable normal (st. hp, mp, mk, hk ; cr. hp, mp, mk, hk; overhead etc.) wack that shit with a st. hk. Be careful on predictability of your st. hk tho, because most of feiās buttons will stuff it, so just wait for him to press some shit then hit him.
Chicken wing is the issue in this match imo. You CANNOT block them, at least not more than 1 or 2 in a match. Regardless of what the frame advantage/disadvantage is after it. It puts him right in front of you, and this is where fei gets a lot of his bs dmg. The RPS of block, throw, dp, etc. is something that you should avoid. If you have a charge and he chicken wings at you, fierce hb. More than likely its going to trade in the air but heās still eating 160, and youāre building meter instead of burning it (at this point, if you have ultra 1 charged up hit him with that instead). If you dont have a charge, jump away from that shit and if heās in range smack him with a fierce, roundhouse, or strong depending on specific spacing.
Inevitably youāre going to end up at a point against fei where you have the life lead, and you should really turtle up. He can rack up a lot of dmg really quick, so be more judicious about the buttons you press. Now I guarantee if he doesnāt have the lead, heās going to try to overhead at some point. Look for that U1/ex hb reaction punish. Donāt splash unless youāre extremely confident in your own personal reactions with it, because the overhead has some deceptively late active frames that I always get hit with (most likely from reacting too early with splash) and get reset right in his face.
Moral of the story: PUNISH EVERYTHING FEI DOES. Do not let any of that cute shit slideā¦ NONE of it!
Holy shit Desto, you put what I think all of the time into words!
lol Whatās the sayingā¦ āgreat minds thinkā¦ before they press buttons?ā Iāve got some other matchup stuff that I wouldnāt mind writing out for specific demand. School is just kicking my ass so I canāt spend a week writing out everything
dbl post =/
āgreat minds thinkā¦ before they press buttons?ā
Excellent line.
Thanks for all the tips guys. I will try to keep all that in mind. I tried reading the guides that the supreme Mr. SNK posted, but all it said it was 6-4 honda against fei long. The info you guys explained to me to makes this match up seem like 5-5 at the least. I guess i gotta plan to trade more and have him whiff the normals. I guess the old problem I had was that when I lost the life lead I was too eager to get in. Now I know I just have to be a little more patient and walk in
i completely agreeā¦ that match is closer to 5-5, but ultimately honda has more life and does more dmg so the numbers boil down in his favor. That patience thing youāre talking aboutā¦ you might be onto something!
My avatar and Quote says it all. Iāve been working on getting more times outs as of late. Donāt know if itās a good thing or not but its sure as hell fun.
Since this is a double post Iāll take the time to say I like good Pasta.
Ibuki writeup next please:)
Short and Sweet Ibuki write up incoming.

personally Iām not too experienced with the matchup but it doesnāt seem like its very hard, lots of people donāt seem to know that thereās A LOT of recovery on kunai (15 frames I think, 7 or 8 for EX?) so if you can, sneak a headbutt (or ultra )underneath or time it so you hit the knife with your head and send her flying, obviously no good ibuki is going to play stupid runaway games with you, but it is good to know if it comes to that.
also if she does a close kunai, you can literally jump over that shit and smash her with your favorite combo.
overall my gameplan is usually keep her out, if she gets in just block and wait for the throw or the overhead, her overhead is pretty slow so its not really that hard to react to if you pay attention, but she can combo after it if she sneaks one in. donāt jump because her b+mp is a pretty good anti air and I believe she can juggle a dp afterwards if she only gets 1 of the hits. not sure what to do about her stupid vortex, but I usually go with āif she throws her knife low, block same side, throws it after the highest point of her jump, prepare to be crossed up.ā not sure if this is 100% , sometimes I still get hit if she throws it at a certain part.
I hope this helped, but Iāll leave the rest to people who are actually good at this game like SNK, Sid, or Destructive
Carl, thatās really good man. And please feel free to keep adding information. I didnāt know about that video but am now going to add in for a better explanation.
Thanks
I have an okay-ish write-up on blanka if you havenāt seen it, thatās actually a matchup I feel very confident in since I play against my blanka-friend almost daily.
further notes on ibuki, she can punish ALL headbutts on block with ultra 2(fucking bullshit) I believe the timing with EX is 1-frame punish so your opponent will have to be pretty sharp to get that, but its really not worth the risk unless youāre chipping her out or she doesnāt have U2 stocked (I believe she can still punish headbutts before she blocks them with one of her normals, not sure which one, the one where she jumps and spreads he legs out, f+hk I believe)
besides all the bad things in this matchup it still feels very win-able due to hondaās great damage output and her low health aswell as the fact that she canāt do much besides get her throws teched and her overheads blocked if youāre not on your back. 5.5honda/4.5ibuki in my opinion, 5/5 at worst if you donāt pay attention or your opponent is a master of kunai crossups and safejumps, 6/4 at best, you really have to pay attention in this one because she has a lot of braindead vortex tricks and dial-a-combos into an untechable or ultra if he can execute combos well.
edit: I hate dhalsim, does that stretchy bastard really need like 10 amazing anti-airs? you gotta have daigo-level yomi to take this guy down sometimes, also, thanks to SNK for the meaty-ultra tip, most satisfying ultra ever actually since most dhalsims always do SOMETHING after a knockdown (throw, teleport) how am I supposed to get in on a good dhalsim? he doesnāt seem to need fireballs to keep me out so the magical headbutt through fireball is out. Something I need to work on, after getting popped in the knees for the 50th time I tend to start jumping like a retard hoping I can get the one opening I need.
So Iāve just made a quick video last night detailing the different ways you can punish any of ibukiās moves that involves a kunai followup (except the tsuijigoe). The video quality isnāt the best, but it does the job.

Just some quick notes about the video:
- U1 through the kunai must either hit hondaās head or completely miss for the ultra to land
- The kunai has more lenience against the super. I think . In the video you can see at 0:10 the kunai sort of lands around his ass
