Has the Soul Calibur series fallen from grace?

Fuck Namco for taking out the main man HWANG SUNG KYUNG for that piece of low tier dog shit Yunseong.

Hwang was too fucking nasty (seriously, he was a contender for the number 1 spot along with Cervantes)

And FUCK Namco for nerfing Ivy in 4.

But anyway SC was amazing. SC 2 was good but very defensive. SC3 was glitch haven. and just had alot of silliness. SC4 is good. About as good as SC2 but it feels a little slower and it takes getting used to.

I sadly lost interest in the series after SC2… SC1 remains one of my all time favorite fighting games, along with VF2 and MVC2.

Pardon, but I always thought the idea to GI throws was retarded

I gave up on SC4 mostly because of netcode. It felt like there was a good game under there, but I don’t really have the time or inclination to find and commute to arcades in my old age, and my friends don’t like fighters, so online was basically all I had.

And it was atrocious. Took ages to find a match, and the lag was consistently so bad as to make it unplayable (despite that SF4 and other online-capable games that I’ve got work just fine on my setup), so… yeah, that was it for SC4. I’m not going to waste my time sparring with the dumbass AI.

Maybe I’ll boot it up some time soon and see if they’ve improved the internet side of things.

SC1 was the best thing ever. If it were re-released with GOOD ONLINE PLAY I’d be all over it. I’m always tempted to plug my Dreamcast back into the TV and just fight the CPU.

SC4 was just horrible. It was like they spent more time on designing tits than actually trying to make a game.

You can still JI throws.

Uh, did you play 3?

Anyway, guard break doesn’t really mean dick in 4; it’s just a visual effect. There are “guard break” moves that leave the attacker at neutral or disadvantage.

I played the hell out of SC on the Dreamcast, played through number II all right, but I’ve barely played SCIII by comparison, and I’ve had my PS3 for a few months now and still don’t feel like getting SCIV (it was on my wish list at one point…). Perhaps it’s because I’m busy with SFIV, but still, maybe I kinda do feel like the game is just repeating itself by now.

I could’ve sworn I had an action figure of him some years ago.

He’s basically a Dural on steroids with shape-shifting lightsaber(s) and diarrhea in the mouth. What’s wrong with that design?

SCIV is very much on par with DOA now. And that’s ignoring the titz. No homo.

Long story short, Olcadan pwns.

The series has just became dumber with each new release. I could only stomach SC4 for like 2 months, until I saw all of Hilde’s bullshit. She’s got to be one of the most broken tourney legal characters in the series’ history. It’s fucking retarded and the primary reason why I didn’t consider taking the game seriously. I also hate how they changed everything about Ivy for no fucking reason. They chanaged her SS/CS motions and took away the buffers. They completely revamped her movesets and stances. I honestly dont like the idea of having to completely relearn the same character for a new game. The guardbreak shit is dumb as well. Kilik has a guard break that gives him a free attack or throw attempt afterwards. Wtf? Xiang has something like that as well. They may as well have made the attacks unblockables. Also WHAT THE FUCK is Namco’s obsession with adding so many fucking just frames?!!? Keep it simple. SC1 was a great game and we didn’t have characters lie Setsuka who heavily relied on JFs. And you want us to play this online?

I played SC1 pretty hardcore, and I was a little hardcore into SC2 during its early days. SC1 for the DC is still one of the most balanced fighting games ever IMHO. Shit SC1 even had the best storyline, for those who are interested in that stuff. I would LOVE to see it re-released with updated graphics and net play. I dont remember people finding any truley broken stuff in SC1 either. The only stuff I can think of off the top of my head is Cervy iGDR and Sofie’s instant ground pound, where she got the full benefit of the attack without having to charge it.

The cloning really wasnt that bad in SC1 either. True the characters were fleshed out more in latter games, but which two “clones” really played the same? All I can think of is Siggy and Nightmare.

SCIV is much better than SCIII that’s for sure.
Dunno how it compares to the others in the series, never played it competitively, but i enjoyed SCIV much more than III.
I also enjoyed it more than 2, my favorite in the series is SC but real close is soul edge.

*SCII was actually my first real fighting game, so I have fond memories of it. I kick myself for not getting into Street Fighter as a child. However, my favorite is SCIV. Had so much fun, but it dropped in the local scene here so it is lost fun I could have had (new game haters…). Online play while fun just will not compare, even if it was lagless.

Do I think Soul Calibur has fallen from grace? Yes, but not completely. I think it’s just become a game that targets US/EUR audiences. I think that the SC fanbase should start petitioning NBGi now to put Soul Calibur 5 in arcades first. Get the JPN back onboard to give the feedback that’s needed for the series. As much as I would hate to wait “10 years” while JPN gets full play out of SC5 it’d be worth it when it finally comes out.*

I find that the SC series hasn’t changed much since SCII. Sure, they adjusted parry timing in SCIII, but other than that, the game hasn’t evolved much. I pretty much apply this to Tekken as well (since Tekken 3/Tag).

The cloning was not just bad from an aesthetic point, but from gameplay as well. The case can be made that few of the clone pairs played exactly alike, but so many of them shared bread-n-butter moves that was a large facet of both of their games i.e.:

Lizzy/Sophie AA, WS KK, 1A, 11A, 2BB, Stomp, etc.
Rock/Asta AB, 6B, Bullrush, command throw->88B, etc.
Mitsu/Yoshi AA, BB, 88B, 77BA, 77A+B, etc.
(too lazy to list others)

You’d still end up seeing these BnB moves/animations used a lot, despite the character-specific moves. It just made the game look kinda half-assed. I remember the numerous complaints back on the super old official SC1 bulletin board because of this. That’s why it wasn’t a surprise at all when, in arcade SC2, the clones were completely done away with. It was the biggest blemish on SC1’s otherwise near-perfection.

Sc4’s system is by far the worst. Everything is so situational. The system ends up making a mockery of itself with all the gray areas bypassing fundamentals of the games. For instance:

**
You can be THROWN out of a crouching 2A.** Thats bullshit. Basically for the 2d players, its the equivalent to being hit with s.LP while youre doing a low. If the rules say MIDS GO UNDER HIGHS, and a 2A (which is a universal poke for every character) is a special MID, why in the FUCK are their frames where you can be thrown if you are still crouching? It makes no fucking sense.

Punishers are ridiculous. The purpose of a PUNISHER is to PUNISH the mistake of your opponent. You block something unsafe? PUNISH. Your opponent whiffs an attack? PUNISH. But the moves themselves are so fucking great that you dont necessarily have to punish, just spam the move because the priority beats out every fucking thing else. For instance:

Cassandra 236:** =
-ridiculously safe
-ridiculously fast
-tech crouch (goes under highs)
-tracks
-sets up mixup/combo oppourtunities

WHY IS THERE SO MUCH REWARD FOR ONE MOVE? Its a PUNISHER. IMO, if a move gives so much REWARD, it hsould have SOME kind of remorse for YOU using it too much. But its not. Just spam it. Spammy spam spam spam and you have a good chance of winning, some moves give so much reward for little to absolutely no effort that its almost a crying shame that people play bottom tiers (like me) who have nothing to use against these tactics. Sophitias 236:B, Setsukas JF’s and Voldos horizontal A can be a bit of bullshit as well.

Some characters have PURE foolishness. No other way to describe it. Almost all of Ivys stuns into high damage comboes are unshakable, that equates to spamming the move until you fish a counter hit, then proceed to finish the rest of the combo until you win the match. Rinse, repeat. Its starting to feel like tekken. Some characters have 123 mixups that are so effective, it just moots the skill of someone whos been playing for years.

But theres lots of other pieces of nonsense filled in that game. I just cant stop playing it. Ugh. Sc4 is just MUCH TOO NOOB FRIENDLY. Bottom line.

SC for the dreamcast was religion.

SC3 on PS2 was godly, Tira all day…

SC4 is amazing, fuck all the BS in here. Music, gameplay & visuals/design are out of this world. Bit WTF to Star wars chars but hey, they are cool (even if Yoda is broken).

Yeah, she was lots of fun to play.

SC is nostalgia, but still decent for what it was

SC2 is the holy grail

SC3 was ruined by variable cancel

SC4 is looks amazing, and has a horrible system thats too situational and gives no reward for patience. Online is by far the absolute WORST out of all the online fighters and theres no plans by Namco to even fucking fix whats wrong but continues to offer unnecessarily holiday themed custom creation parts.

Youre right, its just one of the several instances that I think make no sense in the game. The thing is Zasalamels 2A for example, is a special mid, and it does tech high, but there are several frames during the startup of WHILE CROUCHING 2A that he can be throw with a high out of, and thats just unacceptable. I could see if you were being grabbed as the crouching frames activated, but if you are already below the high, youre trying to tell me there are technically frames in a while crouching move where you are actually standing, even though you cant see them? Absurd.

Like Voldos 1A at the EDGE of the ring doesnt cause ring out. But Astaroths 1A from damn near 6 characters spaces tosses them over the edge. Its a sweeping low, not a high launcher for christs sakes.

Some characters have unsafe guard crushes. Which means its better to just stand there and do nothing instead of attacking because you think you have advantage.

There are also horrendous tracking issues with some moves. Specifically verticals tracking step better than horizontals. Im just not very pleased with SC4 overall. Hopefull this “Broken Destiny” thing on PSP is a precursor for the port to consoles, with the much needed fixes.

Step IS non existent. I guess all these factors work in unison to just make it a really un-fun experience.

The other day I was playing Xianghua and counter hit 66Ked someone off axis, how come they recovered in back turned fast enough to BT 2K me? Its like every time I play SC4 some bullshit happens.

The only good thing about SC4 is that is more polished than SC3. Which is not that good at all.

SC2 is good/okay depending on how I look it, but besides eliminating and fleshing out the clones a little more (which isn’t that big a deal in anycase), it overall degrades the title. I understand people have found memories of it and it was their first foray into the series, but SC1 just trumps in so many ways.

They had near perfection in SC1. I guess the only way to go was down.
