I probably shouldnt be comparing online bullshit to what usually doesnt happen offline, tho.
Fighting games also could use a bit of beta testing. Thats just across the board. I dont know whats so hard about gathering a few guys who placed in tourneys and are well respected in their community and let them sit down with the game for a few days with a lil in-house testing.
The guys making these games arent digging deep enough. It seemed like a few days after SC4 was released we found Ivy’s guaranteed mid tracking unblockable, Hilde’s full screen ring out and Algos bubble infinite. And they only patched Ivys unblockable. :wasted:
Zasalamels unblockable used to have 100% tracking like in SC3. For some reason they take that away. Hes 2nd from the bottom in a cast of damn near 30, and then they take away his unblockable that has 100% tracking.
SC1 - I’m probably the least familiar with this one… it’s a really fun game, but from what I gather it having the reputation of COMPLETELY PERFECT AND BALANCED from old school SC players is undeserved, especially considering there were some serious glitches that weren’t discovered until AFTER SC2 came out.
SC2 - Not a perfect game, especially with how overpowered jumping attacks & guard step (well, anything with avoid in general) are in terms of defense, but it’s very balanced overall and, most importantly, it’s extremely fun to me.
SC3 console - Stupid, unbalanced, and broken in competetive play… but I actually have a lot of fun playing it casually. It’s so lulzy-broke it’s fun! :bgrin:
SC3:AE - I’ve barely had the opportunity to play it so I can’t form a real opinion, although I’ve heard good things.
SC4 - Just not fun to me. I got into the series with SC2 and they’ve pretty much raped everything I liked about that game in this one, like making most lows terrible and having this oki system where it takes forever to get off the ground and you’re at an obscene disadvantage. On top of that, among other things, increasingly broke shit is being discovered
that makes the game look less and less balanced. 'Course, regardless of balance this game just wasn’t made for me.
So, my personal preference (minus SC3:AE) is SC2 > SC3 console > SC1 > SC side games I’ve never played > SC4
Fairly true… but if you can find them, check out Mick’s Sophie/Cassie, Kayane’s X (which raped RTD’s turtley X at the World Tourney in France), any high-level Taki (although actual footage is prolly limited to 2k3 fLoE vids), and ViciousSuicide’s Yoshimitsu. If you can’t find Mick or ViciousSuicide I should still have some vids of them lying around that I could throw onto youtube.
Then I don’t understand why you are calling its praise “undeserved”. Its as if people supporting SC4 or whatever are assuming we dickride the game because its “old” or its “the first”.
That’s not it at all.
The game was truly good and was the peak of how to handle that system - character balance, GI timing, stage design, logical mix-up and mindgames, nearly all of the movelists was usable in someway or another, I can’t recall truly abusuable tricks in the game, the presentation was subtle and top-notch. Everything just flowed well and made sense.
People that picked up SC2 or what-have-you assume its god and that it automatically improved upon SC1 in every possible way because its SC2, or that the older SC players hate on the later titles just for the sake of hating. Its the same retarded Namco trend - people believe whenever the company releases the next installment its “better” (despite whatever flaws, crap it may contain or diverges from the original system).
If you don’t believe me, set up a dedicated scene for SC1 and explore/ play to your heart’s content. Its not perfect, but its truly the best in the series, hands down.
Funny thing, that.
I have friend in the European video game industry (goes by “Saur” on youtube) that told me about the beta testing that went on during SCIII and IV, in both cases respected members of the SC community were asked to test both titles and they brought a number of issues to Namco. Namco either said the problems had been fixed, or they were already working on them, etc.
They didn’t listen to them at all, just released the game the way it was being developed; he was also commissioned for work on the SCIV guide, but again Namco said fuck it and everyone got the Prima guide instead.
My thing is this: If the developers no longer care about quality control or making good work, why should we care about their products?
the biggest problem for newer sc’s imho was the toning down of 8 way run. once that happened, for me it was like playing tekken only without the guaranteed juggles.
They tried, but not enough IMO. That one patch was just like a band-aid on a gushing wound.
Im just not convinced with the shitty CAS parts. Its just rubbing me the wrong way. No tweaking to the online system or anything. Not really feeling like Namco really gives a crap.
lol i only played sc4 for about a month before i had had enough of the stupid 8wr system (that and the parry system of sc2 were what i loved about sc most) and i havent dusted it off since.
tracking b moves pissed me off, in sc2. you can imagine how pissed i was at sc4.
someone said that sc2 was the holy grail… i concur. someone said that 1 was that shit… i concur. everything else sc hasnt made one iota of sense to me and i cant stand games i dont understand.
Oh HELL YES. SC4 is IMO, sluggish. Just like SF4, even the character models feel “bulky.”
Often times I try and guard an attack then quickly 44G backwards to whiff and punish, a very viable strategy in SC3 days with retreating guard but its doesnt work because some moves just reach ridiculously far. The whole idea of spacing is really iffy because some moves reach a little too far. And THEN they track to make it so bad. :looney:
So so so so so many issues. Its really sad the direction SC is going.
Thats very character dependant. Some characters have weak pressure and shit tracking, so their ability to step and PUNISH is crap. And some characters step slower than other characters ON TOP of what I just said.
SO yes, step is very situational in SC4. If its in your favor chances are you play the better half of the cast.
If Namco gave us an SC1 HD Remix or whatever with good net play, I promise you I would dedicate myself to the game and spend some serious time playing it. And I doubt I’m the only one.
I agree with this. SC2 step was way too good. From early on all the way until the game’s waning popularity, people made note of it being too good. Being able to consistently step As was just dumb, and the avoid system made it worse.
I appreciate that SC4 made step/run a bit more like SC1 than the “uhh… step-G!” nature of SC2.
The only reason I’ll even play an SC game nowadays is just to play Voldo and he’s still a blast to play granted the series itself is a mess now.
With that in mind, SC1 will always be the best one to me. Not perfect by any means, but it was just right. No crap RPG-ish modes. No money grinding (IV especially). No corrupting memory cards. No “Your ad here” characters. No step-guard/VC/whatever.
I think beisdes casuals, Namco is appealing to RPG/animu-tards with SC and now, IMHO, is suffering an identity crisis trying to be both and failing at it.
I’d be down for this. That or the good character changes from the later games and put into SC1’s engine, while fixing hitbox issues and whatnot.
I play Mina and Talim. Now what? Granted step isn’t quite as important to them because they have strengths in other areas to cover. Shouldn’t that be considered a good thing?
I think the problem is most people expect the game to play like SC1/2. Guess what? It doesn’t. Maybe you should try treat it like it’s own game.
SC2 was ok,but I didn’t like how Namco changed my boy Mitsurugi from his bad-ass self from SC1.His f,f+B,B was a double uppercut that got changed to a hack-n-slash move that we see now.His SC3 self was almost on par with his SC1 self, but SC4 Mitsurugi is more of the same with the addition of some new moves in his Relic stances
