SC4 isn’t shitty at all. Most of the people that say it seems to say it for superficial reasons (online, non-vs mode related peevs, dislike of starwars) and didn’t actually play the game that much.
I’v kept up with the scene since released, and the game is great. No super turting, good pace of combos and damage scaling (damage is almost just right for everything), NO major bugs (aka step-guard in SC2, VC in SC3) good pacing for both defensive and offensive phases (not one dominates general play over the other at all).
The only “hiccups” the game has is hilde and her ringout combo, but once you learned when she can and can’t pull out charges, and which way to step, it doesn’t seem as bad anymore (atlease equal to, or less than the top tier stuff that other games have, 3s yun, marvel mags, sf4 sagat, t5.0 steve, etc)
SC3 console was trash. SC3:AE however was actually a very decent game with a lot of strategy involved. (albeit still with balance issues) But most never got to play that so I can’t blame people for hating on it.
As for SC4, I’ve described it before as the game they meant to make with SC3. It’s everything SC3 tried to do, but better. It’s balanced enough that any character can win and the sheer variety of playstyles from character to character and (as the game has developed) from player to player is pretty astounding. CFs, which everyone thought would put the game in the scrub category now add another very potent layer of depth. They help prevent excessive turtling and allow characters who lack effective mid/low mixups to still apply pressure and remain competitive. Voldo and Hilde should probably be nerfed but other than that the game is plenty competitive.
The only other complaint I think is valid is that SC4 moves the slowest out of all the games.
about 4, hilde & algol made SC community emo, that’s the main thing. they can’t handle the idea of SC being anything besides in your face mixups for 20-30% damage. game itself is definitely not as bad as they make it out to be.
that said, it does have some legitimate issues with random wonky hitboxes and tech crouches not being as good as before (i’ve seen people thrown out of 2As ffs). and the matchups are more like ST, with lots of counter-picking and some legitimate 7-3s and even 8-2s, which is either a good or bad thing depending on your preference.
but i actually got to watch quite a bit of high level stuff
and i got the impression that at the highest level it became another cvs2, but only a few players were capable of this. but when they were there, MAN was that game fuckin boring
1 is the most fun SC. dunno about best, but most fun easily.
I so wish that Heihachi had been included in later Soulcalibur games. I played the fuck out of him in Soulcalibur II(though Talim was my main) and I’ve always thought he was the baddest motherfucker in history. Link was a joke(as he always has been), and I had a rather unpopular opinion of Spawn…because I really, really liked Spawn’s move set and thought that for a gimmick guest character, his story was reasonably well-done.
Soul Calibur, IMO is my favorite 3D fighting franchise. I find 4 a balanced game where anyone has a solid chance of winning and has a diverse playstyle…even in the NorCal regionals earlier this year, somebody placed top 8 using Rock, a character people thought was absolute trash.
I don’t really think any game in the Soul series is really bad, like how Tekken 4 stands out etc. Soul Calibur 3 had it’s share of issues but was still solid overall.
They keep making unpleasant changes to my characters…
In 3 Ivy was changed and I didn’t like it, so I switched to Tira.
Then in 4, Tira was given an element of randomness and that’s just not fun dealing with, so I switched to Hilde.
Prediction: In 5, Hilde will play differently :annoy:
Soul Blade -> awesome. Played the ever living hell out of everything, unlocked the all the weapons for everybody.
Soul Cal 1 -> Game is magic. All about rocking that transluscent Mitsurugi.
Soul Cal 2 -> Did not like it at all. Saw the game and got excited and suddenly half the moves were not the same anymore. Movement felt weird from the first one. Graphics were great but it just didn’t feel the same. Purely subjective opinion on all of these because this series is just fun for me, not a tournament game. Love it to death as something to play with friends and enjoy at home.
Soul Cal 3 -> Borrowed it for a thanksgiving weekend and played the shit out of it for the time off. Think I unlocked the shit having to do with playing 1500 fights and all sorts of other nonsense that shouldn’t be unlocked that way. Had a lot of fun with it, game also gave us Shaqalamel. Shaq owns hard. Anybody ever find and explanation for the nauseating customs in this one? A good deal of them were just ugly. But it did have X in a little black dress.
Soul cal 4 -> Wet noodles, nobody gives a fuck about Algol. Star Wars characters need to thrown. Bring back Edge Master or Olcadan with the owl head. Got a PS3 for SF4 and a friend bought me the game for my b-day. Game is still in the case.
Problem with the story is that they ruined it by keeping nightmare a continuing character past Soul Cal 1. Had the sword kept passing hands from character to character, it would have turned into one pile of awesome as far as the story went. They just dropped the ball in that aspect.
For no reason other than I wasn’t having fun playing the game. I had fun playing SC1/2/3, but SC4 wasn’t fun to me. I don’t have exact reasons why, I just didn’t enjoy it, hence why it’s at the bottom for me. Win or lose, I found it boring.
SC2 is probably still my most favorite fighting game to date.
1 was excellent, 3 was absolute trash, and as much as I tried so hard to like 4, I just couldn’t do it. (It’s better than 3, I’ll give it that)
My biggest beef with 4 is that movement seems to be overall nerfed from 2. Stepping is not instant. Getting up off the ground is so much slower.
Among other things, throws can’t be GI’ed anymore AND the GI window is smaller. Critical finishers are ridiculous, and of course the extremely balanced game that SC once was is now a total mess.
soul calibur IV has to be the most broken fighting game of all time, not even whining im just sayin the first 3 were great games, but there are alot of glitches or broken moves in 4 that people abuse, you get punished for blocking with guard break I thought throwing was punishment for alot of blocking. I havent played mine in months so i dont kno if they fixed all of it but i stick to tekken more which is the best 3d fighter and prolly one of the most balanced fighters out there. Soul caliber is great but they need to make a 5th one to make up for IV.
When was turtling ever a problem in the Soul series? With throws, mid-low mix-ups at the speed of light, quick unblockables, quick movement, and ring outs, Soul Calibur was a series where turtling was tough to do.
The new critical finish stuff is unnecessary in my opinion, overemphasizing offense…when offense was already overemphasized.
Anyways, I really enjoyed Yun Sung in SC3. He was was more fun than in SC2 and SC4.
Believe it or not, SC3 might be my favorite of the series, even if it was damaged…
