Has the Soul Calibur series fallen from grace?

The game was broke, then they fixed it. It’s Namco’s way.

Look, T6 was broke, then they fixed it (BR).

Now SC4 is broke, they’re about to fix it (SC: BD).

Namco = superglue.

Lord forbid a developer supports their game.

I hope you’re being facetious.

And maybe you should read the thread from the start since many people who played through the series like myself explain why we think about SC4 the way we do.

Oh, they all have swords and weaponry in them, that must mean they all play same.

Iirc they removed most of the VCs that the game had, but not the memory card glitch. Yep, they managed totally miss that.

loved SCIV for a hot minute but the general community is what turned me off. the cheapness of some of the ring out tactics (its part of the game blah blah blah whatever whatever i know), the lag, Star Wars :lame:, and of course with Sieg/Mare, Kilik, Maxi, Astaroth, Mitsu basically being the only characters online i just couldnt get rid of it fast enough.

but i will dl Broken Destiny to check out Kratos for sure

I love sciv but scIII was my favorite & what I hated about sciv is that they made Setsuka white lol I prefer her scIII azn look but wateva its still a good game

Amen brother! It just sounds to me like people just cant let go of the past and they want the same stuff over and over again. I’m hoping people will get over themselves and give the game another chance and the game will get popular again kinda like what happened with 3s.

But like Cern said, its still Soul Calibur at the core.

Finally got SCIV recently, it’s nice to finally play SC with stick. I wish SCIV had individual voice options like SFIV. I don’t wanna have to leave Vader in Japanese…

As an SC player who plays SF, I got to say this…

You people know nothing about a game and are trash talking it so much. Even I at least spent a long time on SF4 before I came with my opinions.

If it weren’t for balance issues, namely 2 characters, SC4 is the best of them all. I could say the same thing about SF4.

There’s a huge difference between the tiers in SC4 compared to Sf4.

I’m surprised we haven’t heard anything about a SC5 yet, especially given how well SC4 sold.

SC2 is my favorite, followed by SC1, then 3 and then 4, although i don’t think the last two are bad games, just not as good as the first or second games.

What worries me is that Namco is – if they haven’t already – in dangerous of creating a game that will have to rely primarily on guest characters just to sell reasonably well, instead of allowing its characters to develop and become well known like the ones in Tekken and Street Fighter are.

It’s true they have a problem with character recognization(is that a word?). There’s pretty much no Jin or Heihachi, a well known character for the brand. Even though Siegfried is the main character(I assume, his endings always seem like the correct ones), I never think of him as the main. I’d think of Mitsu as the main character because… I don’t know, he’s just one of those “main character” type of guys. And yet, his plot is just “get something that beats guns” (I could be wrong here, havn’t cared about Mitsu and his story since SB).

If you look at the boxarts, you’ll notice that SC keeps having different characters + bonus characters on the covers, while Tekken has a much more strict line, featuring mostly Jin.

he’s a ripoff of another main character - Haohmaru
Go there and look for yourself

and how come he has both Haohmaru’s kogetsuzan AND his overhead slam?

Even though SCIII was kinda dumbed down, it was still pretty good. SCIII did have the best newcomer characters though. I love Tira, Zasalamel, and Setsuka.

I’ll let you know which Soul Calibur is the best once I’ve decided whether Assassin or Hwang is the better character.

Isabella Valentine ftw.

Why did we have to Necro this thread. :frowning:

While there’s no ‘main’ character, I would think that SC has some pretty iconic characters. Nightmare, Cervantes, Siegfried, Voldo, Mitsurugi are all pretty memorable. At the very least, everyone knows Ivy and Taki. :looney:

I could never get into Soul Calibur. I kind of enjoyed 2 but I didn’t get the hype behind it. I dropped it quite quickly if I remember right. The recent Soul Caliburs especially seem like gimmick fests rather than deep, serious fighters.

I’m probably going to sound really dumb here but a large part of my dislike for the series is the fact that the fighters use weapons. There’s something primal and alot more satisfying about kicking and punching your opponent into submission. Tekken and Street Fighter both give me this feeling very well.

Alot of the enjoyment of fighting games is in the skill and progression. But alot of it also comes from just beating the fuck out of the other guy. Soul Calibur wasn’t giving me that satisfaction with its’ swirly twirly acrobatics.

tell that to a kendo prcticioner :looney:

I enjoy all of the games in the series for different reasons. I liked Soul Cal and Soul Cal 2 about equally with a slight edge to SC2. SC3 was OK, but forgettable due to its most glaring flaw: poor balance. I guess I’m in the minority, 'cuz I like SC4 a lot, though my Nightmare has never been the same since SC2. I’m sticking with the series, anyways. I loves me some Tekken, too. On a side note, Mitsu and Haohmaru were brought up and it got me thinking about the new Shodown title in the works. Anyone else here looking forward to that one? Oh and on the topic of the similarities between Mitsu and Haoh, I wouldn’t go touting Haoh’s originality too much, considering he’s basically SNK’s impression of Ryu with a sword…just sayin…XD
