I didn’t spin anything. The quote I cited was on point I’d love to see the strengths of the classic game play mixed with a new direction for the series to give us something that still feels like Halo somewhat but is fresh and new The powers introduced in Reach is a step in the right direction but I’d like to see an even more dramatic mechanics change and change in atmosphere.
I’m sure it’s aided by a healthy doe of nostalgia but I still remember playing Halo1 single player for the first time I was blown away by the pacing of it and how each level introduced a new element and how the last few levels combined everything so perfectly. I just hope Halo4 and every game in the franchise gives me a hint of that greatness they had instead of the dog shit campaigns of 2 and 3.
Yeah I know what you said. You said “shitty”. Shitty is RE:ORC. Shitty is Enter The Matrix. Ninja Gaiden 3 is shitty. Playing close to the previous games and not venturing out too much isn’t “shitty”. That’s all I’m trying to get at. A better word choice would be “middling” or “average for Halo.” It paints the picture that at least the campaign is serviciable. Shitty just conjures up images of the game being only about the flood for ten levels over the plains of the Serengeti at night. That’s shitty.
The impression I got was he wanted a COD clone. Narrow corridors so everything devlolves into a campfest, iron sights, scripted events? In a time where we are begging developers to express their own originality instead of playing on tired troupes(See RE 6).
I’ve always been a UT fan at heart and nothing has come close to that experience. Promethenon weapons are like flank cannons btw…
I really only played Halo(1) cuz its fun. The first one was really fun to run through and the silly shit like throwing frags, plasma, rockets and watching the warthog go flying was entertaining.
This game has to touch focus on the previous games as it has been a long ass time since the original one. Sucks.
What direction would you like them to go? Spartan ops is pretty new, lol. I would have liked some suggestions about where to go with that franchise. @GT. I just think they like games and unless the game is total ass, they give it the benefit of the doubt. I’m in that type of mind frame and wish I could rent/buy everything.
@ IGN… I dnt trust those fools, lol.
I like Halo’s pace and speed. I would really not be for Iron Sighting in Halo, nor do i really feel like having them saturate it with pre scripted oh shit moments. Halo makes it’s own Oh Shit moments each time you play that’s a lot of why it’s fun.
Whenever I hear people say they want infinite sprint I think of those kids in cod that die and respwan and run to the exact same spot 2 secs and continue to do that in like spans of 3 secs with a stat line of 8ks-20ds
yeah, sprint in a feature that I do not like in modern games and feel it is in so many games as a ***conspiracy ***to fuck over the lifespan of controllers.
I play better when i don’t sprint, lol. It just that the pace of the game doesn’t change that much with a press of a button. The game still has you checking around corners and such. The only benefit is when you have to trek in team maps.
P.S… any1 replay halo3, fucking multi-player is insane, jump so damn high. Chief should just be able to double jump.
What I’m really interested in is if strafing has made a comeback.
Many modern games (maybe not pc) have take strafing out in favor of holding the stick to one side.
-Auto-aim/magnetic bullets dont help.
Few things from watching the movie.
-At start, any1 else think MC would be shooting aimlessly in circles?
-thank goodness warthogs got an improvement
-“We’re being hunted” yeeeeaaa, my dick got hard too
-I did some research as to when it takes place and got information of their age… no wonder they appeal to frat boys.
Halo 2 and 3 campaigns were shitty, especially when compared to 1.
What specifically did Gerstmann say that made you think that? Everyone on the bombcast have said they like COD games but are sick of it being the exact same formula over and over again with little to no change throughout the iterations, a valid complaint many gamers I think have of the franchise.
I guess you’ve never heard of UT04, Q3, TF2, Tribes, KZ3. Those are some of the best multiplayer fps experiences ever, whoever worked on those games thought really long and hard about what kind of multiplayer experience they wanted gamers to have and you can see that in the design of the games themselves which focus on speed. There was a time when speed=forced yomi, Halo needs to get on that. COD is the polar opposite of what I’m talking about.
Flak cannon is my favorite weapon in any FPS so that’s great news:tup:
I’m glad you asked lol there 4. major changes I want to the tired Halo formula:
In Halo1’s campaign there was a sense of awe. It wasn’t just the halo universe being introduced but more importantly the way each level revealed something new and how the pacing of it all really made sense for the first game in an ongoing series. Beyond the well structured levels that forced players to try somethign different then they did in previous levels there was a creepy and foreign alien like atmosphere to the visuals and design. Halo needs to recreate that initial alienation and sense of xenophobia with a completely new visuals, in short when MC goes to a new planet or galaxy or whatever it should look and feel nothing like the covenant race and planet. Halo 2 and 3 completely destroyed all the mystery and atmospheric tension of the first game. Worse yet, the lazy writing and lazier pacing of the campaigns were as generic and boring as can be so indicative of the fact that Bungie knew they could make a shitty campaign and no one would care.
As far as narrative goes I dig the “one man army” theme I really do, but unlike Halo1 where the covenant felt like a credible threat, 2 and 3’s campaign were boring shooting galleries that not only squander the epic stage set by 1 but run it into the ground by introducing dozens of unnecessary plot devices that served only to obfuscate and and cheapen the franchise as a whole. Halo4 and all other games in the franchise need to not be lazy and at least make an attempt to create plausible context for shooting countless aliens as Halo1 did. There is potential for great story telling, I think 1 did a fantastic job but 2 and 3 pissed it away. I defy any of you to tell me the significance of any campaign’s ending if MC just ends up shooting the same aliens in the next game. Endings are meaningless in a franchise that will continue no matter what.
Game play wise I like the skeleton of Halo. However the sluggish pace and controls are just flawed game design. A player shouldn’t have to fuck with the options and controls at all let alone a lot just to get a game to feel responsive. The sluggishness I’m talking about is how slow MC is which is a flaw only magnified by gargantuan environments which compound the already simplistic game play. What’s the point of a run n gun FPS like Halo if you can’t run? I’m glad there is infinite sprint now that will not only elevate the excitement of multiplayer but also adds a fresh extra layer of depth while still retaining the simple fun of Halo.
Also make all or at least most of the weapons viable! What’s the point of having 235723642837 weapons when all of them suck and no one uses any of them besides BR, rockets, and sniper? That unfortunately has always been more of a gaping flaw limiting multiplayer as a whole. Really hope 343 opens it up more and makes all the others weapons just as GDLK.
Don’t be lazy with multi player level design. Halo 3 levels weren’t terrible but reeked of laziness and gimmickry. What happened to well thought out maps like lockout, blood gulch, midship, warlock, and hang’em high?
Don’t be afraid to change the feel and flow of game play through new mechanics. Like I said the class powers were a great step in the right direction but I’d like it seen taken a few steps further. Give classes multiple powers, take out aim assist, bullet magnetism, and bloom. Create new mechanics or change game play features that somehow subvert gamers expectations on how they think multiplayer should be played, randomized elements are always one way of accomplishing this.
I just wish Bungie/343 put 10% of the creativity and care into there campaigns and multiplayer experiences that id did with Doom2. I’m still getting Halo4 though I haven’t played it in 2 years lol. I’m hyped for the prometheans I really hope they make the game feel really different so I’m not just shooting assloads of covenant in generic locations all over again so I was disappointed when Gerstmann said most of Halo4 is spent doing that not on prometheans.
Yeah only on any Halo 4 discussion right now. Everyone is talking about this one review right now. This isn’t SRK exclusive.
Orochizoo actually man I didn’t think I’d agree with you so much but yeah. Halo, especially taking place in the future, could use some more creative ideas all around. Like I’m still excited for 4 but I’m waiting for that breakthrough. Like Crysis 2 is so hype because of all these cool moves you can do. Unreal Tourny is so hype for the speed and how every weapon is viable. Halo needs more of that. It’s nice that you can sprint but you are super soldier! You should be sliding and at least hoping off walls once. And yeah I also feel like the weapon balance is off. I can’t say too much more till after I’ve played 4 but I’m looking for that real future combat.
Also having replayed Halo 1 in Anniversary duds it is still a pretty spectacular game up until The Library. And you are so right about it being slow but there was always a great deal of scenery and wide space to take in. It’s a FUCKING SHAME how after all these years most and I mean the vast majority of post Halo FPS have still focused on tight corridors and small open battle fields. It’s sad that playing Halo 1 is a breath of fresh air.
I replayed 2+3. At first, I hated the arbiture but now its a pretty cool story. The cov has a lot of politics as they are use to running through shit while the humans ONLY have chief, lol. Friend ruined three for me and I don’t remember it much.
Halo:CE:AE (capcom?) was really fun. look awesome and feels the same. plus those terminals are crazy, give life, and emotion to the Guilty spark. I felt bad for the dude.
Only, yeah, i agree, but I never played those games cuz I didn’t have a ps3 or good pc.
I’ve only been advocating the campaign , online wasn’t my thing.
not a fan of BRs, Pistols, DMRs> anything.
racing toward weapons wasn’t fun… people bitch about this on Gears.
@Orochizoo Did you ever get to play Reach, IMO despite some anticlimactic deaths the campaign lived up to Halo 1’s. A lot of time went into making Halo 3’s MP and it showed, they started using a lot of MP design decision in the campaign maybe that’s why it turned into a shooting gallery. I remember really enjoying Halo 2’s campaign, first time getting to fight in a city, using a tank, dual wielding weapons.
I can’t recall Bungie releasing a weapons patch once lol butI expect 343 too.
Eh I like all the Halo campaigns. They are varied and give you lots of different shit to do. Good fun. Can’t think of very many FPS’s that mix vehicles, and wide open terrain, and lots of guns an shit together quite as well as Halo does. Not saying they aren’t out there or anything.
Yeh, I’ve said it before, Halo is the only campaign I really care to follow, the whole universe is rich with story. It’s a real shame no studio would take the risk of making a movie, because there is so much they could do.
Well halo 2 to date is the only halo I truly enjoyed, especially the campaign so all the comparisons make me excited. Plus I haven’t bought a halo since 3 so hopefully the time apart will make me enjoy the franchise more. I was wondering though, is there anywhere I can go to see a compilation of all the vehicles in the game? I know 343 released a trailer with all the weapons but I’ve searched the net and haven’t seen anything similar for the vehicles.
I had heard the guy that directed District 9 was supposed to direct a Halo movie, but the logistics fell through. I heard Microsoft wanted a lot of control over their IP. Probably to avoid too much Hollywood bastardization.
WHAT IS THIS, VANQUISH!?
I call enforcer, lol and we all go mark VI when we beat it
Raider looks like and elite/samurai
shit looks tight.
Review around 30 minutes.
A lot of the same things mentioned, good and bad.
Not a diverse break in objectives, mentions “others” cod/bf as having diverse mission objectives.
I feel like there is a “step-daddy” complex where 343 is the new dude and many kids(people) wont like it because its not bungie.
Halo 1 and 2 pretty much burned me out as far as play any FPS in multiplayer mode. I still enjoy FPS campaign/story modes. I’ll probably pick it up when it’s $20 at gamestop.
