H. P. Lovecraft would be proud - The Shuma-Gorath thread!

He is pretty much the same in that department. I really don’t notice a speed increase. Just putting this out there… strider assist is gdlk for shuma. It’s frustrating to try to make your way through mystic ray spam with that ridic assist. I miss my jump s otg, but I’ll live. He has a pretty insanely hard time getting in on some of the really new good zoning characters and buffed vanilla chars. Call it coincidental, I call conspiracy, but doctor strange really shits on shuma.

As for Mystic stare…who knows, it might be easier to use now due to the new physics. Needs more testing, ya.

Unless the Devitilization parry got something crazy good, I have a bad feeling that Shuma is still on the weak side of the cast. He feels mostly the same, which is not a good thing to say.

I’m a big comic reader and I actually read that issue.

Back in February before Shuma was released, I was pumped, so I went on a big scavenger hunt for all the issues he’s been in. I checked a bunch of lists online and as it turns out, a lot the comics on those (bogus) lists had a lot of issues listed where he doesn’t appear at all and is only mentioned or shown briefly (As in some guy is saying a magic spell and invokes Shuma’s name or something like “Abracadabra wigglydywhoop Shuma Gorath kazam!”).

The complete list once I trimmed it down was pathetic, but for anyone interested, here it is:

The Complete Shuma Gorath Anthology!!! (Seriously…)
1. Marvel Premiere #10 (1973): *First appearance. Battles Dr. Strange in someone’s brain (70’s Dr. Strange comics are trippy) Previous issues are about him but he doesn’t appear. *
2. Marvel Premiere #14 (1974): Dr. Strange meets an all powerful time traveling wizard from the future (Did I mention Dr. Strange is trippy?). They travel back to prehistoric times and find Shuma killing dinosaurs. The wizard beats him and throws him into space. Shuma doesn’t return for a few million years.
3. Strange Tales #13 and #14 (1988): These stories share their comics with another story so together they’re like one issue long. Dr. Strange goes to another dimension and fights Shuma. He wins by merging with Shuma Gorath or something, and he goes back to normal in issue #15. Also, someone in this issue claims that Shuma is a lot more powerful than Dormammu.
**4. **Conan the Barbarian #259 and #260: Shuma is unleashed when some wizards read his “iron bound books” (Which were first mentioned by Robert E. Howard in a Conan book and were the source of inspiration for the character.) Shuma kills the wizards, fights Conan, and eventually gets banished by someone destroying the books or something. Shuma looks way different than he usually does and has claws, spider legs, and a mouth. I’m not sure if this appearance is meant to be canon to the Marvel universe or a tribute to Robert E. Howard. Either way, in the late 90’s one of the wizards who was killed briefly comes back to fight the Avengers. He mentions that he fought Shuma, so it’s canon now, whether or not it was intended to be.
**5. Marvel Knights #26 and #27 (2006): The Fantastic Four fight against some people who release Shuma. Shuma fights a bit and then Dr. Strange teleports him away to Stonehenge. At the end of the comic, Dr. Strange comes back all beaten up and exhausted and says he beat Shuma off panel and sent him back to his dimension. I always thought that this seemed suspicious and that the writer intended Dr. Strange to turn out to be possessed by Shuma or something, but nothing ever came of it.
6. Invaders Now #4 and #5 (2010): The Invaders (A WW2 team including Captain America and Namor) reassemble in modern times to finish up old business in some European town. Someone invokes Shuma and they fight/defeat him uneventfully, sending him back to his dimension again.

That’s it! All Shuma’s notable appearances. If you see any other comic as having him listed as appearing, don’t believe it. It just means he showed up for one panel (Like Wolverine First Class #12) or was merely mentioned. Also, despite being in Capcom games about the Infinity Gems, Shuma never actually had anything to do with them in the comics. Apparently Capcom was just given a guidebook of Marvel characters to choose villains from and they thought Shuma looked cool.

PS - anyone claiming to have become a fan of the character from the comics and not the games is a LIAR.

yeah his latest appearance in Invaders is paltry at best.

ok so I’ve been messing around with shuma and I have a question since I didn’t buy vanilla.

Could you always get a launcher after mystic ray? I was messing around with him in training mode doing devitilzation -> :h: mystic ray -> :s: which worked anywhere on the screen, and I was getting mystic ray into :m:, :h:, forward :h:, :s: in the corner

Edit: did some testing and this works on normal size characters but will not work on rocket raccoon midscreen. Will work on RR in the corner.

it worked on some characters in vanilla, though the range of connecting the S prevented much of a combo without the corner. Btw my old vanilla combo is actually easier to do now, though i think you’ll still have to revert to mystic stare combos for high damage.

Nice job compiling that list, dude!
So it turns out that more than half of the comic book issues that are listed as having Shuma-Gorath in them don’t actually have him? Wow. That’s definitely interesting to know.

You know, I do share your theory about how Shuma-Gorath originally got into Marvel Super Heroes back in the day! I’ve always thought that that’s probably how Capcom decided to include him in the game. They were probably checking out a list of existing Marvel villains, looking for a character with an unusual style, and they found him. And since Capcom don’t give a crap about relevance or popularity and love bringing obscure characters into the spotlight, they greenlighted our beloved Elder God. And the rest is history.
Yes, that’s probably how it happened.

And the world was better for it. Thank you based Capcom!

LOL Hyper Mystic Smash beats out Wright’s level 3. Bwahahaha!. Some guy online used it on me,
And Wright was like “The guilty person is…”"

3 seconds later.

“How can someone like *you *defeat the infinite?”

Shuma certainly feels so much better.
Right now, I’m rocking a BFF team of him and Ghost Rider, with pretty much whoever tagging along.

Lvl 3 shuma is bad now. I literally couldn’t catch a dorm who just jump back teleport behind over and over.

but you can MASH it now! for like 30k more… lol
I love his post Devilitization/Taunt pose.
Still need to work on dem combos though. my main combo doesnt work on small chars and women.

I think he means lv 3 Xfactor Shuma, not chaos dimension. Chaos dimension is still good.

from the video thread. Some very legit shuma play here.

Oh yes. So very much better.

Is this the standard Shuma combo? (He used to be my goto guy in MVC2, but I truly thought he was garbage in Vanilla. I am giving him another shot on Team Strange)

:d: :m:, :d: :h:, j. :m:, j. :h:, j. :h:, j. :m:, j. :h:, j. :h:, j. :m:, :l: Mystic Smash, :d: :m:, :d: :h:, :l: Mystic Stare, :s:, :m:, :m:, :h:, :s:, (Eyes Explode), :s:, :m:, :h: ???

Can you Mystic Ray -> Eye of Agamatto or Dark Hole here? Then maybe you could throw in another stare, relaunch, and finish it with a ton of meterless damage. I really do not want to use meter unless it gets me over 800K. (Basically kill the really dangerous characters in the game)

I plan on using Shuma in 2nd position on Strange/Shuma/Dorm, but I am willing to be flexible and move him to point if it’s a better fit.

So guess what guys?
Shuma has a legit wavedash

Its a bit tricky but it involves pressing X and Y and -> on the xbox.
It takes practice but Shuma’s hitbox become’s rocket raccoon sized because he spider crawls

I wish I could upload a video but I dont have the equipment, You’ll know if your doing it right because Shuma will zoom across the screen in spider form. He’ll cover enough distance to actually close in on the opponent after a launcher for a 50/50 mix up. Shuma moves about the same speed as Arthur’s daggers

Hell synge I’m pretty sure you can’t fit all those mediums at the end tbh. For instance I know after eyeballs explode you want to do :s: j.:h: :s: Mystic Ray super.

My go to combo has been c.:l: c.:m: c.:h: :s: j.:m: :qcf: :H: land s.:m: c.:h: j.:m: j.:h: j.:u::h: land :s: j.:m: j.:m: :h: :s: mystic ray super, I think I can squeeze in a mystic ray after that secodn c.:h: to try and get a better ending but i’ve not really labbed shuma tbh.
