Guy Ultra SF4 Changes

How is Guy flawed when he’s just fine, it’s Poison that they fucked up on, that isn’t a flaw towards Guy, her wonky juggle state benefits very little to the whole cast. This literally is the best version of Guy and the most well rounded, several Guy players have been putting in work so it’s not like he’s bad at any means whatsoever. Capcom made errors with new characters, that isn’t a fault on Guy… at all…

Ultra Guy is amazing…

Play Ultra for couple days, then try AE again, you will feel the difference, 2012 Guy is garbage in comparison.

Fresco has a pointand Guy is not fine at all. When you add a new character to the game, you gotta do some testing here and there. For Guy’s super not to connect properly (something which was a problem in previous versions) or standing chain combo (still an issue on Abel for example) is ridiculous. I mean really, it would take about 5 to 10 mins of testing per character to see if the combos actually fucking connect.

Sure this is the best version of Guy but it doesn’t mean anyones going anywhere with him. It’s taken so many years and really…it’s the best version for many characters anyway so it doesn’t matter that much.

I mean you can land counterhit cr.HP on crouch techers, like against Cody, and not be able to follow up with st.MP. In a tournament, that’s game-breaking.

People used to say, Guy has a lot of character-specific stuff to remember. That was just a gentler way of saying, Guy is fucking broken and you gotta do different combos for different characters cos he’s the whiffmaster.

They give him a 1 frame Ultra 2, and they give most characters enough pushback on their attacks so that shit will whiff.
I’m glad I more or less quit the tournmanet scene cos it’s just not worth it. There’s a certain level you can reach with Guy, and you can’t go beyond that - unless of course you’re playing scrubs who dunno the match-up and make Guy look “top tier.”

This game has characters that are way more fun and well-rounded. I regret not spending some time with them - than hopin

Yet, Redman has made notice with Guy in AE2012, Top 8 and Top 16, RLBS (Streak) placed top 8 at the final NA Capcom Pro Tour tournament and has made a killing at Next Level, I’ve given numerous top players a run for their money with Guy online and offline… I even beat Snake Eyez and brought Dieminion to 2-1 last game last round for each match against his Guile. Can’t say he doesn’t know the matchup since his brother mains the character and Dieminion even plays him. None of us have had an easy road so the “you’re fighting scrubs” isn’t an excuse here.

Guy’s super missing on Poison isn’t fault on Guy, that’s a fault on the character’s design specifically her juggle state. Fei can’t even get 3 hits of this chicken wing on her. Most characters have to alter the timing of their juggles to work on her consistently. Abel’s hurtbox is the reason for Guy’s 2nd hit of chain to whiff. The hitbox of it is the same as standing MP. Abel’s hurtbox isn’t very wide and that same instance can happen surprisingly on every character depending on where you are when st.lp hits. This also happened in past games, Alpha 2 the final hit would whiff due to the 3rd knocking the opponent too far away for it to connect consistently, Alpha 3, sometimes the 3rd or 4th hit would whiff only if you were near the max range of the chain. It’s common gripes dude, at least the move isn’t completely unusable like Viper vs a crouching Elena. Hell Yang still can’t use st.lp consistently on crouching characters as it will whiff. Doesn’t immediately mean… oh my character is broken because this doesn’t work at this range because this character’s hurtbox doesn’t collide with it. Hugo has probably the most deceiving hurtbox only to benefit the character so he doesn’t get murdered on an even harder account. You think this all goes on Guy only, you’re wrong… Man look at Deejay then look back at Guy and tell me who got the short end of the stick? Or who is honestly a broken character. Because Guy is fine and capable of making a run at a tournament. The problem is as everyone in the community has stated. Ultra is a game where you legitimately need a second character to pull you through sometimes. But against Poison and Dan is where Double Ultra is viable. You shut down offense and able to still create damage off of their defense. Unless it’s EX you can punish her flip kick with U2, and if she doesn’t do a meaty elbow either, unless it’s max range you can grab her out of her first rekka (didn’t do any testing with Kara Ultra.

The thing is you have to put in the work and you have to have secondary options to still get damage or to mix it up.Feel like you’re going to have the st.mp whiff after a cr.HP. Do St.HK/Dash Up grab/ (if its counter hit) Ultra or EX Hozanto. Take something for the road. You still get damage and stun and hold ground or a catch them sleeping.

I think Guys flaws are blown out of proportion here because of the notion of using ONLY Guy against the entire roster. You could bring up the same argument for any other character (few examples given by Blood above). Fighting game characters arent intended to play perfectly in every matchup and situation. Sure there are few who are close to this perfection, Guy definitely isnt up in the Yun/Cammy ranks, but one is delusional if he thinks Guy is among the worst. Bring Guy into a 5-5 matchup, and he will play better than in 2012, because his small buffs add up to superior space control and easier handling.

If one wants to play Guy competitively, the player himself has to play competitively, such as to prepare secondary (or a different main even) characters. I’m impressed at people who place top 10 in a tournament with Guy alone, because I honestly think it’s just as underprepared as bringing in a lone Dhalsim or Abel.

By the way, welcome back af0, I hope you’re well.

ABel getting Top 10 is easily possible, That mixup game is strong.

Lame+Guy is broken-ish vs a lot of characters.

Lame guy is a mix of TC shoulder chip/TC or far mp~Hp Flip escapes/Footsies/1-2Punishes/maintaining(20%-50%)health lead/Time Scam/Turtling.

The character counters are very low but (El Fuerte,Hugo,Guy). Other counters are auto correct supers and certain ultras(Vega/ROG/Chun/honda/Ryu/bison/U2gief/Decapre/U2t.hawk maybe).

Benefits:Lame/easy wins/could change your style to rushdown at any point/almost no tech grabing skills needed/Control/anyone can do it.

Cons:Lame/kicks from lobby/RQs(some in real life)/Hate mail/have to be active/knowing when to not play with your food/you get as much respect as winning a fight by kicking a dude in his balls.

So Blood, u mean to tell me just because guy was trash and his shit didnt work then in A1,2,3 that it should be the same in ultra? U know this is pathetic and sorry to say but ur pathetic for thinking that hes fine and accepting the bullshit that crapcom puts out… let me remind u what crapcom said when developing ultra… “every character will have a legit chance to win tournaments and be viable in tournament play”. remember that? Guy, Deejay, Dan ect… will “NEVER” win any tourneys or be viable characters among top players in the communitee. Guy is just a nice character to fool around with not to main. Guy cant really pressure anyone safely. He is minus on just about everything he does. Im just tired of the bullshit in this game and refuse to play it anymore. I dont even watch the tournaments anymore either cause all i have to do is read who’s attending and can determine pretty much who’s gonna be in the top 8 and who’s gonna win! And I know who’s def not gonna win… anyone playing GUY!!!

The point Blood is making is that as flawed as he was, Guy was still one of the best characters in A1 and 3 when played right. Every game is gonna have a V-Akuma or USF4 Yun, Guy just happens to not be that in this game or the next.

I get your point though fresco, why couldnt Capcom just make Guy absolutely flawless? Why not let him be able to BC Abel from every single range or specifically test him against the new characters hurtboxes? But the real question here is, do you even compete in tournaments? If not, is there a reason you need Guy to be a top dog contender? Have you yourself ever played Guy to the absolute best, better than Kreymore, Streak, Blood, Redman and every other pioneer of the character? Those guys have shown results, so what about you? What gives you the absolute certainty that Guy can never win?

Guy was never trash in Alpha 1 nor 3, He was subpar in 2 because of the nerfs he received and how well other characters utilized CCs over his own. Honestly you read one fucking sentence of mine and disregarded everything else I said, what kind of mockery of a player are the both of you? I specifically said at max range his final fight chain would whiff in 3 and he was still safe after it if it’s blocked and you could Proximity Cancel anyways for more damage output. If you watch the vids below you can clearly see the utility of the character. Newsflash Guy has ALWAYS been negative in his pressure outside of SFxT where his flip elbows were + to hell. By all means quit, someone with such negativity wouldn’t win anyways. You clearly don’t know the points of making adjustments, character specific shit has always been in the games as well as for character specific hurtboxes. You want to make a complaint do so, look at the history of the game. Guy is very viable in the game, but even top players have 2nd/3rd characters under their belts. Is it doable with one character yes, people have done it before and still do currently. Stop being a little bitch over having to put in work for a win, actually learn how to play and make adjustments and doing what is needed to actually win. Otherwise do as you said and don’t play. Guy has the tools to win a tournament, that doesn’t mean he’s not going to have bad matchups or needs to make adjustments in his game to work out in his favour overall.

Thought it’d be appropriate to say this in the changes thread, but I gotta say that Guys buffed Ninja Sickle has really changed the way I play the character, or rather improved it. I’ve become much more active on the offense, both Guys CH close mids and cr.MP can connect to Ninja Sickle. This is INSANELY good, because they all have different startups (5f/6f/7f) so you can change up the frames of your traps depending on the matchup (example: Abel having a 5f crouch tech while Ryus is 4f)

Ninja sickle itself is a good move to throw out, some characters even get juggled from mid range and needless to say, it leads to many followups. This move alone has made Guys frame traps and corner pressure much bigger threats, which in turn makes his throw more dangerous too (paired with the faster walk). Some opponents may be led into doing more mash DPs in the face of Guys pressure, so mix in staggers.

I feel like I’ve been repeating the same thing for numerous posts now, but I really want to encourage everyone to make ninja sickle a cornerstone of their offense, for me at least the very presence alone seems to support all of Guys tools.

being in the air earlier than previous iterations of SF4 with Ninja Sickle has definitely been something I’ve abused. Knowing I can frametrap any ground grab move with Ninja Sickle unto a heavy damage combo or KD has taken the edge of certain match ups for me.

Just because I saw my a1 video posted. I would like to say, although a lot of that stuff is usable. A lot of it is just fun stuff too. A1 a lot of stuff is not actually guaranteed combo wise so the game so the game has a bit of random factor in, is the guy going to roll or do I roll punish. A lot of combos in teh game are not true combos. Whats more a lot of the stuff I do in that video is off bushin chain, which realistically doesnt have a lot of use since it would be better to do a more damaging combo. If characters had longer life bars etc it would be more useful, but the fact is many characters in the game kill you off a couple combos. So although again the stuff I do in that video can happen, and is useful. Im sure that looking at the video it might look like… Mind blowing, or broken as hell. But its only so useful in a real match here and there. The video is for fun.
Anyway I just wanted to post that because alpha 1 gets a bad rap, guy is not even the best guy in the game. Ken and akuma are. A lot of characters in that game kill you off one knock down to a mix up. I just make guy videos because I think he is more fun, hes not the only character that can go crazy. And for what its worth, I wouldnt worry about seeing to much of that anyway. Because even when I use to play vs the japaense etc ive never seen anyone besides me ever do any crap remotely to that level. Never seen a cross up kara roundhouse ever even period to a move lol. So ya its fun, and looks broken, but if you play the game at a high level youll see its only so useful.

But ya again just posting because I dont want someone to be detered from playing the game just because it gets a bad rap sometimes and then they see the video and think that happens regularly every match or something.

Oh I know it doesn’t happen all the time outside of those lucky chances or punishes really, and with your input it actually generally argues that despite having great tools doesn’t always mean a guaranteed victory. Plus you’re the only one with Alpha 1 videos these days that I could find of besides Arcade playthroughs which doesn’t give much of anything on Guy.

Ya if I could get my capture card to work again on this stupid computer I kinda want to do videos for other alpha characters as well just to show how good a lot of them are.

Guy can now do Forward+St.mp red focus cancel and can crumble at level 1? Is that a glitch or meter heavy tech?

Guy got his alpha standing short in omega mode because I guess that is supposed to make him OMG so crazy he can actually do something with that button!!!

Then I try him in regular mode…then I look at the patch notes.

No but seriously, fuck you.

Guy is fine in Ultra though ._. Omega is Omega, the only character that honestly got broken in this recent update… is Decapre. Capcom is forever messing up with their coding…

I’m so glad you are the final authority on what makes guy fine, no thanks for that. I can totally see now that giving him that adjustment to his kick that he had in his previous incarnations was way out of line.

Omega mode is just Capcom’s way of showing how fucked up retarded the game would’ve been had they listened to all the suggestions. I remember some kid here talking about how Guy should be able to throw kunais and teleport, and well, he’s got the teleport. I love the back throw cancel off forward throw, may not be too cost effective, but it’s a nice allusion to Final Fight.

I still am curious what the purpose is to the change to neutral jump HK (ninja sickle) in making the second hit slower.
