Guy Combo thread: Make em say Hya!

Hey guys. I’ve been using guy lately and i really like the character and how he plays except one thing: can he combo at all from his bunshin flip elbow drop? Seriously, i can combo from regular elbow drop just fine but elbow drop from bunshin flip seems worth my steaming pile of crap. Even in training mode i couldn’t get anything to link after it. I read the frame data for guy and it seems that elbow drop should be the same but it’s not…

Can anyone confirm this?

I believe the Bushin Flip Elbow drop can only combo with either a very specific space and timing, a counter-hit, or if the opponent is ducking.

Im hating it… c.lk s.mp is a 1 frame link and c.lk c.lp pushes a lot of characters too far for the target combo.

I would hope not since that whiffs on some characters.

My BnB so far is cr.LP, cr.LP > st.MP, st.HP xx run slide. I don’t think it does as much damage but it never whiffs. You can replace one of the cr.LPs with a cr.LK to start low but that requires another link. Not sure if you can go from cr.LK into the target combo straight up – will try that when I get home.

Depending on my distance and placement, I’ve also been known to use LP hozanto instead of the run slide.

If the regular tatsus had better properties I’d use it, but it’s just too unreliable unless you’re practically kissing them.

Guy’s tatsus don’t seem to be of much combo/damage use unless you’re in the corner. Its a decent anti-air when you’re farther too.

ex. Tatsu is of course a decent option on wake-up…

…Guy’s tatsus don’t get used as much as the other moves I think

Good stuff. I’ve been learning Guy ever since I got the game, he’s good but I’m having to get down all these effing combos of his.

Minor trick that most people here probably already know, but I didn’t see in here: It seems to me that any Hozanto (except EX, haven’t tried that) can be followed up by a Super, so that would help as far as adding onto combos that end in it. Just do the input right as they start getting knocked back from the Hozanto and it lands.

You sure? I’m pretty sure that it would only whiff if you tried to finish the target combo…or are you talking about the spin kick whiffing? In that case replace the spin kick with a shoulder?

You can’t cancel the st.mp into a shoulder, it doesn’t connect cause of the start up, unless you’re using an EX Shoulder. I personally try to use Cr. LP, St.MP, ST. HP, LP Hozanto for blockstrings, frame data says that LP Hozanto is safe on block.

Combo i use to hit confirm is Cr. LK, Cr. Lp, St. MP, MK Tatsu/Run - Slide

You can cancel st.mp into lp hozanto.

I was not aware of that, unfortunately I don’t have the game to test it out, but i’ll take your word for it

np. its pretty situational combo anyways

c.lk into s.mp seems pretty easy to me, but I guess it’s preference for people. After messing around in training mode, started to try to open up more options for mixups.

After Bushin combo grab in the corner, instead of opting to do a special, I saw that c.MP and c.LP hits them as well, but the timing is a bit tight. After c.MP I found that I could could meaty Elbow Drop and follow up with another combo.

So it’s something in the corner:

j.mk, c.lp~bunshin combo grab, c.mpxxLP elbow drop, c.lp~bunshin combo, EX Hozan or Tatsu

Always breaks 690 Stun , first portion is ~270 damage, second is ~300 damage for me on Ken, c.mp after the bushin combo grab also sets up perfectly for Izuna Drop instead of the elbow.

Probably old, but s.lp~s.mp can link instead of chain so you can special cancel when linking off of s.hk

np. its pretty situational combo anyways

Anyone able to get off SFA3ish combos, becuz that was my main draw to him in SFA3 was his crazy combos. And by SFA3ish i mean comboin into a bushin grab or being able to at least do a couple more air juggles after bushin throw combo…:china:

s.mp xx lp.houzanto and c.mp xx lp.houzanto is a ch only combos

I did some testing on c.fp > target combo and found that it only works reliably on a hand full of characters even at point blank distance.
The c.fp > Target worked on the following characters:

Juri
Chun
Makoto
Dudley
Sagat (sometimes)
Cammy
Guy
DJ
T-Hawk

Can combo the target int Run Slide and EX.Houzanto making c.fp a really effective poke against these characters. Range can be an issue but I found only at the very tip range of c.fp. The hit confirm is pretty easy to and getting 300+ damage and 400+ stun from a poke is huge.

For everyone else c.fp > s.mp xx(EX.Houzanto or Run/Slide) works just fine

I really like cl.hp mk tatsu for an easy punish with no meter (250 dmg 400 stun)

for some reason im having a hell of a time getting off cr. lp cr. lp st. mp st. hp xx lp Hozanto.

What part are you getting hung up on?

The best thing I learned from along time SF Vet, Is dont pay pay so much attention to the visual cues of the Combo. I Pay attention to the Rhythm. I can do that combo with my eyes closed, literally-(Because) I just listen to the rhythm of the taps. (Assuming your using a fightstick, if not ignore this post lol)
