This movie was one of my more favorite marvel movies. It’s easily top 3 material, it was funny in ways Iron Man 3 wish it was.

I dunno, I kind of agree with her, those things she pointed out were some missteps and she didn’t even trash the movie, hell she seems like she liked it just wasn’t a fan of some of the subtext in the movie intentional or not.
Some of those “sexist” things are actually really well thought out if you think about it.
The whole leaving the girl there, is there to add to the charm of Quill and show how much a hero he isn’t. Irresponsible, stupid, short sighted, selfish. How is this dude supposed to be the hero, how can he?
Or when Rocket Raccoon tells Gomora to go fuck dudes for favors. Why would he treat her with respect, or acknowledge here if he didn’t like her to begin with? It wasn’t until the last 20 min that Rocket Raccoon respected the others. those assumptions are made without really thinking about the context of the movie and how the director wants us to see what the characters are.
It should be noted that salon can be a literal feeding ground for tumblr feminist logic…it’s not as insane but most of the time it’s barely above kotaku quality journalism.

She takes exception to Peter forgetting that alien chick on his ship because it dehumanizes her and uses her as a"joke"…yet seems to completely overlook the scene where that mercenary guy kills a entire squad of male soldiers just to show off how badass his whistle weapon is. If it’s"sexism"to treat a girl as a “non entity” by virtue that she wasn’t given a name and used simply to sell a joke, I’d imagine the dozens of nameless male characters killed off coldly, just to sell how skilled certain characters are would also make the film sexist against men…even more so in fact considering how many dudes got wasted in this film.

Gamora was strong and powerful in this. Nebula strong and powerful. Thanos clearly catered to his two daughters. Nova prime a woman. Star lord risked everything to save a woman. Star lords love for his mother was a key point in the movie, and she didnt just die, he disappeared and forgot about her. THE WHOLE GOD DAMN SOUNDTRACK TO THE MOVIE WAS BECAUSE OFHIS MOTHER. The slave woman stands up for herself finally, and although she dies in the process, there is a message there to never accept such conditions because you are the weaker sex. Drax is pissed and ready to murder everything because his family died, including his wife, a woman.

I saw the movie last week and it’s definitely one of the best. However, I have a dilemma. I have an acquaintance who is sort of closed minded. I’m trying to get him to see the movie, but he can’t get past the fact that there’s a talking raccoon in the movie. I keep telling him that the movie is awesome, and that he would like it, but he’s really barring himself from viewing it due to the fact that Rocket isn’t some generic badass. Should I keep pressing this dude to see the movie?

Saw it last week. I appreciated both action and special effects aren’t spared at all and appear throughout the whole movie, it looks like it had a budget close to the Avengers and over a regular Marvel movie, which can’t be bad. I doesn’t has long dull stretches but it doesn’t feel short.
That said, it has the failures typical of Marvel movies that reveal Disney has its dumbing iron grip in the franchise. All substelar minions are pure faceless drones made of rock in the biggest effort to avoid the feintest ideas of blood or death. They don’t have to go gore, but they way they are doing it it just water down the action. I guess something like the Blade movies would never get Disney’s seal of approval, and that is sad.
Also, it is notable how they go far to ensure the plot never gets serious even by mistake, compusively breaking any kind of tension they maybe building by the obligatory one line joke or prank. That last one where Quill goes dancing to distract Runan from delivering the killing blow is silly beyond usual, and at least for me takes like a point or two from the movie alone. This whole “Ok we couldn’t thought of anything interesting to get your full attention so here some jokes so at least you get a laugh” plot device has gone nuts since some years, and I hope future movies stop using it on spades.
