Well, since I posted Im gonna go ahead and introduce myself bcs I never did…
I’m a Gouken player on pc. Since I started playing street fighter I only play him, around a year ago.
And the reason I signed here was, of course, to look for info about gouken’s terrible machups…
I’m at 2000-3000 points now, and figured most of the matchups but I still get hit by the cheap chet.
Would never drop gouken because… he is the hipster of shotos.
Man if KBT’s Ultra mod is accurate, Gouken has seriously leveled up. For instance, in the Blanka match, Blanka can no longer just throw out slide when we have meter. At one bar I’m pretty sure we can punish at almost every range on block AND on reaction. At three bars, we can basically threaten to use ex tatsu offensively like SRK, though still more strictly than other shotos. The tradtional bait-jump-with-fireball zoning strat has gotten easier and way more applicable with the new tatsu.
The new cr mp may not have the full comboabilty that we we hoping for but it’s a damn sight better than what we have now, keeping the opponent more “seated” than usual. This lets you get more chip and also seriously ups Gouken’s mp Senku. It seems that the strike invincibility and the slight movement get enhanced just that much more, allowing Gouken to blow through a lot of attacks with proper timing and generally catch a lot of slip ups. We can still be thrown however. Gouken’s ability to punish has been upped and he can hold his ground way better. For a mid level player like me, I’m pretty satisfied that we got such nice buffs and such minor nerfs, though I still think there are things that could definitely be improved.
I played online with some friends using the Ultra mod, and “leveled up” is an understatement.
My favorite change by far was the jab buff. EX Tatsu is nice (will get into that in a sec) but jab really steals the show. No longer can Cody and Sakura just plant themselves on you hitting normal buttons and force you to guess. Your jab is ridiculous… fast, and even a trade puts you in a more favorable position. It just gets you out of so much bullshit. And if you chain a few, you can time a link into Heavy Tatsu which is really nice damage. And don’t forget punishes: jab is amazing at punishing moves with fast recovery. And you can spend some meter to get big, big damage.
c.MP isn’t what I wanted but it’s great nonetheless. People actually have to respect your low game on wake-up, making Gouken’s oki much stronger outside of the obviously lost safejump setups. Plus, you now have a 5-frame attack that can lead to max damage on the ground by spending some meter, which makes performing unsafe attacks against Gouken really scary. We have more choices when choosing a punish; you can spend 1 meter and get 200 damage with EX Tatsu, or you can use 3 to FADC c.MP->Hado into c.HP->EX Palm for 450-500. My friend learned really fast to stop trying to get away with Criminal upper on block.
EX Tatsu is also very good, the reasons are self-explanatory and I don’t need to go into them too much, but you can get some absolutely insane damage if you have good confirms.
This new Gouken feels solid. My friends remarked that for the first time they felt they had to respect Gouken while pressuring him, and at mid-ranges, because he is just too explosive if he has meter. I think Ultra will be a good time for us. Gouken feels more well-rounded and less linear, and just better in general.
