Gouken Match-ups and Character Specifics

Does Cr. short go under tiger knee?

Sometimes. It’s really hard to time, but it’s technically possible. Not really worth working on.

Okay cool, thanks for the info!

Don’t listen to shit liek that dude. Yes it is vital to learn that shit learn it well,so when u play xiahou mao’s dan you can escape his corner trap w knee spam in the corner. Use it to duck the tip of balrogs U1 if u can’t afford damage. Use it learn it. Get good homeboy

Such great info and I will take it to heart. Thank you to you all.

Looking for help with the Ibuki matchup beyond the limited info that is already posted. Good Ibuki’s that know the matchup will not be baited into throwing out neckbreaker or trying to kunai > vortex on Gouken’s wakeup. Once she gets in on me and puts the pressure on, I find it really difficult to get out or do much of anything. I can block and tech fairly well, but it is only a matter of time before I fall prey to some mixup. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Don’t have a ton of exp with that one but it seems like a less severe akuma. Don’t fuck up and land big damage when you punish. Great advice huh?

After blocking EX DP from her do reversal U1 to punish. Besides that… Don’t get stunned?

The EX Headbutt can be a bit of an issue since it’s armor goes through fireballs, but the beginning of the match is YOURS. With three different kinds of fireballs, you force E. Honda to play a guessing game and loose a (hopefully) sizable chunk of life to get in close. Just remember to keep your counter move ready for the times when he tries his sumo-slam (his fly-up-and-land-on-you-with-his-ass move). Your saving grace will be the fact that many of Gouken’s moves send E. Honda flying across the screen, so you only need to get in one lucky shot to make your opponent start his approach all over again. Play defensively and try to out-zone E. Honda. In fact, you can check the E. Honda message boards to see how much trouble they have against fireball-throwers.

If i might add, honda(me) will punish mid high and high fireballs with head butt. Especially if i c that gouken is charging it, ill gamble and use ex. Ill will condition you to throw high by jumping fp or jump over the lp fireball.

EX fireballs are particularly good against Honda.
I cross him up usually after knockdowns too…

But if EX headbutt flies through fireballs in Super, it’s a different story…

No they dont , unlike blaka.
Instead, save ur meter for this setup
Charge lp hado- fadc dash up x2
Or
Charge lp hado - fadc dash lp rush palm or gouken flip mixup
Why? Bait fp headbutt ( punish with palm)
Bait butt splash ( punish with counter parry)

If you don’t have ultra, a good option against EX dp is a hurricane kick punish. You can use the same thing with tricky Gen players who like to play with the floaty part of Gen’s up-kick.

Any vortex attempts with ibuki can be stopped simply by Kongo. It works on akuma’s air fireball too. use the c.mp poke, and it knocks her out of her slide, neckbreaker. She’ll probably got for her air stomps, you can kongo that too. Be warned, if she hits it, the super wont usually be far behind .

Look at your replays as to why you are letting her get in. It’s either not enough footsies and anti air cr. fp or you got punished for throwing a fireball.

More importantly, are you going on offense by safe jumping her once you knock her down and keeping her in that hard knock down state?? Some say Gouken lacks a Vortex, I big to differ he still has mix up potential, although Akuma’s hammer fist could be the best set up move on the game  In fact, this is probably the way you should approach most matches. Shoto’s and Adon are treated a little differently along with some EX, Supers, and Ultras.

Other than that, treat them all like the treat you. Knock em down and keep knocking them down. And base your mix up from that. Gouken is at his best when he is on offense how it’s done through zoning or rush down is up to the user, but the ones who opt. to play offensively once they’ve scored a knock down are normally the Goukens that have success vs. these high octane offense characters, b/c you keep them on the defensive, where Gouken thrives. And if they make a mistake > it’s Palm combo, Ultra, or something that leads to another knock down back to where they started… being on defense and you being on offense.

If all else fails. EX Kongo that bitch!

Been looking for more confusion shennanigans. Besides bullcat and phunkism, anyone else know any some what proffessional Gouken Tourney players?

Any tips for fighting Tournament level abels?

EX cammy flip. I keep gettin fuckin grabbed off that shit. How do I stop it?
Im pretty sure I get grabbed off of crouch. Either I get grabbed or she crosses me up with it. Is there a normal anti air on reaction i can just fuck her with?

Yeah its a tricky one. Just duck. Then AA with c.hp. Always works.

c.hp doesnt work if cammy wanted to crossup with the ex. or is it different timing?

Abel:

  • Generally an annoyance, a real problem with a good Abel player
  • Once he has EX, he’s a real PITA
  • More of a normals game against him
  • Lots of baiting for him to use EX meters

No-EX bars gameplay:

  • At full screen, toss fireballs. Fully expect him to close the gap, ASAP.
  • At mid screen, be VERY careful when you are spacing fireballs. Abel will roll at you and TT, constantly.
  • Up close (within sweep range), he’ll want to get behind you or FA your moves. His roll is very vulnerable, so be prepared to grab him.
  • Generally be good with your normals in this matchup (a good rule, in general). You want to bait that roll, so normals are very fast to bait them out. I tend to poke plenty with c.LP/MP up close and s.MK at some distance
  • Once you score a knock down, cross him up. His anti-air isn’t fast enough to stop, nor is his roll (without EX).
  • Abel loves to jump with that huge kick – learn to kongo it.
  • Don’t spend a lot of time trying to FA him, he doesn’t have a lot of attacks that are worth FA’ing and will quickly grab you once you start doing it.

Abel w/EX gameplay:

  • He WILL use EX roll to escape on crossup or knock down, count on it. Once he’s out, he’s neutral so be careful to grab or punish heavy.
  • He WILL use EX TT grab when you have are poking him. Have your poke strings down pat or he will grab you.

In general, keep him back. Once he’s close, bait out that grab and EX meter use. I don’t tend to get big punishes against him (lots of sweeps and grabs), but ymmv. Finally, I tend to use FADC more after LP palms or fireballs against grapplers (esp Abel) since I really need to score a knock down against him to stay effective.

Thanks alot for the tip. It really worked wonders for me. Just poke’m and watch the fireball. One other thing. BEWARE of ULTRA 1 and watch your fireballs.

Timings early throw it out once shes a third of the screen away. If you can time it, the ex hurricane works wonders and usually stops them from doing it again. If you miss however, get ready to eat a big pile of punish.
