Dash back after f.mk - better than jumping to read a grab because if he just attacks you get combod. Dash back puts you out of grabs and normals range
Gouken’s backdash is pretty terrible because it doesn’t go very far. Also I don’t think you can combo into cr.hp xx ex palm if you backdash and he command grabs, best you can get is probably a sweep. Good Abel’s will be option selecting a sweep when they do shorts and jabs. But yeah if they don’t option select you can get away with a backdash and get the hell out of there.
If Abel likes doing f.mk -> cr.lk/cr.lp you can throw him in between the f.mk and the poke
What I’ve been doing recently is s.mp -> close s.mk xx lp hado -> cr.mp xx lp hado. If you get a counterhit with the s.mk the hado combos and you can combo into a sweep too instead of the cr.mp.
If you’re ever going to cancel a medium into a hado you should do s.mk because it leaves you very close after it finishes.
You might be able to get off a cr.LK > Tatsu from that range. I’ve been trying to work that into my game more since it’s a low normal into tatsu that gets some space in between you and your opponent. Abel is kinda weird though and sometimes he falls out of the Tatsu, so I’m not sure how well it would work midscreen.
Thanks for the heads up, I’ll see if I can work it into my corner pressure. I just like the one I posted for the crazy chip you can get from it. It’s been my round ender in more than a handful of matches.
I’m getting beaten pretty badly by a boxer lately. Usually I can handle it the first and second round, but by the third round, it appears that he have me figured out. Head butting me very accurately on neutral jump / block string / etc. And pretty much leave me nowhere to go but corner.
Any idea what footise to use here? Standing mp seem to do ok for a bit, but quickly getting destroyed when he started crouching. He throws me way too much to try Kongo, but if I don’t, he pretty much just jabs me to no end. Worst when his jab can connect into cr.hp when mine can’t.
Any clue what to do here? I already followed most of the tips beside the “fake him” one.
don’t be predictable…the match is hard but it is manageable, if you knock him down with a sweep or forward throw you can safe jump him & punish hard if he tries headbutt
never jump at him if he’s crouching, this should be obvious but i see people do it all the time. if he likes headbutting in the middle of your “block” strings, then bait him out, do two jabs & sit back. crouching MP also works well in the middle of his jab spam shit
do a lot of neutral jump attacks from afar to bait rush uppers & when he does em just crouch & sweep. & of course spam fireballs when full screen to make him waste meter or charge, if he does a TAP it’s best to block, they might follow up with an EX rush punch…it’s best to sit back & let them do dumb shit if the get you in the corner, & don’t jump at all if you see him ducking, bide your time
No no no no no. The Balrog in my local area is an expert at hitting people with far AA EX Rush Upper or TAP and juggling into ultra. Headbutt also has shockingly long range. For example, if you neutral jump at the beginning of the round hp headbutt will hit you. If you get away with a lot of neutral jumps it’s because the Rog doesn’t know his character well enough.
I assume you’ve never had a Rog do dash super/ultra to go through your fireballs. He has to dash on anticipation against Gouken though so it’s just a matter of not being predictable.
If he does a TAP it’s best to EX Tatsu or ultra it on reaction. Don’t block that shit, it’s hella slow and if you block it he just managed to get next to you. Also if you think he’s going to EX Rush punch you should just throw him. He’s -2 on block so a throw will beat everything besides headbutts and ultras, including EX Rush punches. Gouken low jab will beat everything besides raw ultra/super/EX straight after a blocked TAP.
If you backthrow him out of an EX straight he’s gonna think twice about doing that again. Against Balrogs that like to wakeup EX Dash Punch, throws are an awesome counter. Just don’t get caught by a headbutt.
In general Balrog will get you into the corner because his ultra automatically puts you there. So being able to block is important. However remember that EX Tatsu won’t whiff on crouching rog so if he abuses walk forwards jab do an EX counter/EX tatsu.
In footsies you should use your normal pokes: cr.hk, s.hk, cr.mp. s.mk can be nice if he does a jump from far away. Focus is very good against the average rog: If you absorb a sweep, upper, or straight, you get a focus crumple from really far away and can do EX Palm combos.
If Balrog likes to do EX Rush punches to close distance throw him out of that shit. It’s actually really easy. I haven’t had as much success with backthrow as forward throw but obviously the reward is much better. Also remember that raw ultra armor breaks.
Don’t ever wakeup Kongo against Rog unless you’re sure it will hit, there’s no reason to take a risk like that. Just block and tech throws. If he goes for an overhead you can actually backthrow him out of it on startup or punish it on block. It’s kinda hard for Gouken to punish it on block but he can do something like cr.lp/cr.mk xx tatsu. You have 2 frames to do it.
If you’re getting hit by headbutts during blockstrings you’re being dumb. He can’t catch jab with EX Headbutt in general. He can’t even headbutt at all if you safe jump because he loses charge! Normal headbutts are faster but have no real invincibility. And punish headbutts with cr.hp xx EX palm.
hey, i’m a bison player and i’m planning to go to a tournament here in cali soon. i’m trying to identify the options every character can use to shut down the EX Psychocrusher as a getaway option on bison’s wakeup. For example, after the knockdown, ryu has jump in OS DP, chun li can downforward roundhouse and kick from behind, and she also has an OS c.hk or s.hk upon jump in.
What are gouken’s options to beat this escape option? If you are extra generous, please let me know how you option select/straight up beat EX Devil’s reverse and teleport as well thanks in advance!
I don’t believe anyone is just going to give up trade secrets because you ask them to, especially when the info is on the forums and you’re just too lazy to look for it.
wow wth, who cares, ppl gotta stop being so dumb when some ask for help…whats the big deal, we should be more willing to share any info, tips, and so called serects. Now wonder japan will alwasy be 50 yrs ahead of USA… they share shit all the time, and american players dont.
hey i main Gouken and play the bison match up alot with De Mavrick. send him a pm and ask him were from south fl, so jsut check the Atlantic South region ok and he will gladly help you out.
Hmm thats not entirely true, while they are more forthcoming, there have been a couple instances of knowledge held back till tourney time even in Japan.
Me though I agree on trying to be open with the stuff, it allows a deeper analysis and better proliferation of info, but I can’t blame those keeping it secret for a big tourney.

Fuck it. Ask another Bison, we Gouken User’s stick together. LOL.
To learn how to beat Gouken, you must join the fold and learn the way of the master.
You could always do battle instead.

iam just gonna leave this here lmao…shoryukennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
If it was another Gouken player it would be a different situation, but he’s a Bison player who doesn’t want to do any research or ask other Bison players what to do. All the information he needs are on the forums and if he isn’t going to take the time to read I don’t see why I should cough up the information he needs to beat Gouken. I share my information all the time, I don’t give out information to people who have access to the same information I do but refuse to use it.
^ Exactly, and the fact that he doesn’t even use Gouken is even worse.
That’s like me going into the Sagat forum and say “Hey… how does Gouken beat Sagat???”
OS Viper’s wakeup after a jump in with EX Tatsu and she can’t do anything about it.
cool haha - do they all hit or is it just me asking to be hit by an ultra or something?
It’s option select. If they Ultra, it won’t come out and you’ll be able to block. All reversals, including EX Feint and backdash, get eaten up by it.
no i mean if they backdash for example do they FALL OUT of the tatsu?
i realize what an option select is - but i also realize the unreliability of my tatsu XD
Not according to the video.

neville also said that if you time the OS better you get full hits on Honda buttslams. I can’t confirm that though
