Against Chun, the way I approach the match relies on which Ultra she has.
Zone with fireballs, keep her out, and when you can land a knockdown, pressure those KDs if she doesn’t have meter, and a time or two even when she does (but make sure to place the metered pressure wide, so if she EX Birds, you only get caught for one or two hits). This lets you know how twitchy she is. If she jumps for the chance to EX Bird, you may be able to bait them out later to make her burn meter.
If you predict EX Fireball from full screen, EX Flip gets in for big damage. Chun, like Guile, has more recovery on EX projectiles. Now, you still can’t flip it on reaction, but if you read it, go for it.
If Ultra 1:
When she gets Ultra, the only time you should think about throwing fireballs is after you swat her with something that puts her at full screen. Gouken’s FB recovers FAST, and from full screen, when timed properly on her wakeup, you’ll recover in time to block. Punish that shit hard.
Now, if she’s wise to the fact you recover from fireballs too damned fast for her liking, you can introduce a new wrinkle, the feint. Gouken’s far st.MP looks for all the world like his fireball throwing animation, and when you neutral crouch, only to come up with this normal, you may bait unwary Chuns into reacting, letting you block and punish (or counter-Super/Ultra). Offline, you may want to do 4125MP (using number notation), a quarter circle from back to down, and then neutral before hitting MP, to give the proper audio to the feint if they’re listening for buttons.
If Ultra 2:
Keep chucking that plasma. She’s trading her ability to shut down your zoning game for guaranteed combo damage, so take full advantage of it.
Chun is looking for a couple specific setups for landing Ultra 2:
–EX Legs
–j.FP->j.FP
Naturally, you want to avoid letting her have either of these. Be a little more aggressive in getting her to burn meter (weigh the circumstances, of course. Don’t take the EX Bird hit if it’ll kill, obviously) to make EX Legs a less attractive choice, and if you were trying to beat her jump-ins out air-to-air, start using AAs religiously. Unless you get sloppy, you shouldn’t be seeing this come out.
you can stuff Ex bird w j.lk , gflips , command dive kick just time yours after hers starts up I would say around 3-5th frame i think or so works great, also use j.lp as a solid AA vs her strong ass options in the air you can setup crossunders this way becasue of her narrow jump arc
Takinflight, what is the spacing like to stuff the EX Bird with lk? With Dan you can stuff with an ambiguous jump, cross up or not, or from any distance out to just beyond her sweep range, and you can trade from just about any distance.
You know whats really starting to piss me off… BLIND PICKING!! Im really starting to hate this feature in this game. I made a team , Gouken and bison so they could cover each others bad matchups. When I fight a blanka I want to use bison. When I fight a guile I want to use gouken and so on and so forth. Blind picking is fucking everything up for me and I want the feature gone!!! In this broken ass game you need to counter pick sometimes when your characters have really bad matchups. Whats the fucking point of this feature I mean when your in a tourny you can see what character the person is picking right RIGHT!! No fucking blind picking at tournys so why online!!
That would leave the matchup screen in a constant loop of counterpicking each other, as it is now, you can’t back out after the costume selection; if either player could keep reselecting, it likely wouldn’t end.
Sorry for the rationalizing, I know this is the venting thread, but honestly, I agree with what you mean =)
So be it! If you go to a tourny your going to have to deal with it anyway! Yes I remember vanilla and I don’t remember being that bothered by it. Its a part of the game its having a fucking game plan. I play bison and if im in a tourny or playing online ranked I dont want to be fighting a guile! Its foolish. If you want to win you have to play smart and at your advantage or best possible matchup. If your playing bison and your about to fight diminion’s guile then prepare to lose unless you have a gameplan/ counter pick.
You know what no. Perhaps im using the wrong fucking term. Alternate pick is what I should be saying. In my case I play gouken and bison and if I were to fight a guile I would Pick gouken which would be my Alternate pick not Counter pick. Gouken does not have an advantage over guile but he can put up a much better fight then bison. Its just smart to have an alternate pick for matchups and blind picking is retarded.
In the end its pointless. They are trying to protect people from something your going to have to deal with anyway if you were to enter a tourny or if your playing someone in person. Counter picking/Alternate picking will and forever be a part of fighting games and people need to just deal with it.
I need to fucking just play Yun or akuma or any other character with no bad matchups lol.
Ive never heard of a tournament doing this. Well a long time ago i went to a smash bro’s tourny and we had to tell the guy watching our match what character we were going to use and we had to stay with that character. At least Major tournys like the one that just past by (Seasons beatings) and even Evo dont got blind picking. You can very well see what character your opponent is picking because hes sitting right next to you. Once you win with said character then you have to stay with that character unless you lose in which you can then switch characters. This is how most tournys are run. Ive seen justin wong do this many times as he would hover over rufus just to see what character his opponent is picking then he may or may not move to another character or not. This is what I plan to do for strategic purposes for my best possible outcome within my two characters match ups.
Some people like to try and counter pick with the whole cast and end up failing due to knowledge and proper training with said character. Play two characters who can cover each other or play one like akuma or yun who can dominate by themselves.
Ok. You might be ok with waiting 45 seconds each time a game is started to play hot potato at the character select screen, clearly the majority are not ok since it was changed back in Vanilla.
There really isn’t a debate here.
EDIT: You’re also assuming you’d even be able to figure out who someone was picking in the last 3 seconds and then move your cursor on a giant character select screen to the appropriate character.
Gouken and bison are not too far from each other so im not really moving that far. Im not counter/ alternate picking with the whole fucking cast lol just with Gouken and bison. Honda = Gouken Zangief= gouken Blanka= bison balrog= bison and so on and so forth. Just trying to play smart here.
When AE 2012 comes out I will be training for EVO 2012 and going to local and major tournys when I can. I want to have a game plan. I should not have to deal with blind picking but whatever nothing I can do about it. Most people only play 1 character anyway. I will only play a character i like but i also want to win so I have to do what I need to do.
You’re not getting it. Yun Blanka and Guile are all within one square of each other Guile rapes Bison, Yun rapes Gouken. You have to choose after, he can choose at 0 seconds you’re stuck where ever you are.
Spacing isnt the issue the whole thing I think to her feet is vulnerable, its when you activate your attack over her after her kick has been initiated and I think its about the 3-6th frame of the EX bird kick animation, I could be totally wrong with that but its around there.
