Baited Hakan’s U2 with a very nicely spaced DF dive kick, practically on top of Hakan and very grateful I didn’t land on U2. Instantly threw U1. Ended up eating Hakan’s U2 because the move counts as being airborne. Darghs. Thought for sure U1 would have gotten the 3-hit, since he was close enough and you don’t leave your feet until after the first two hits. Won’t happen again now that I know…backthrow into U1 next time…

What are thesituations where gouken doesn’t have answers for? Granted quite a few things,like proper reversals and wake up I think you need to use EX but other than that I think he’s a solid character.
People hate all of his character specific non sense. I think it’s Genius, granted he could use 2 improvements.
I am by no means a Gouken player, in fact I only read this thread because it was most recently posted on when I logged in lol.
That being said I wish more characters had all sorts of crazy character specific stuff like Gouken does I think it makes him both interesting and more in depth most others.
Gouken NEEDS to be able to jab in to any damn thing just like every body else can.
He can jab and c.jab into HK tatsu. But not on some crouching chars. I wish it hit all crouching. Maybe combo from jab to palm too. Might be to much?
Also, does the dive kick from normal jump combo into anything? the DF dive kick is very easy to combo of, but I haven’t been able to do it from normal one.
Give Gouken some two frame link that will take c.LP into c/s.HP! Make c.MP chain-able so you can have a fireball or LP palm!
Here’s silly annoying: Gouken’s HP palm cannot be combo’d from any normal. Think about it! Every shoto can go from their HP/HK into some HP/HK special, right?

You can’t even special after the 2nd cr. lp, that’s stupid. Atleast allow him to hit confirm > tatsu. St. mp is no good when they are spamming jab up close.

Now that I will say, some Goukens are better than others on his wake up. So it’s kinda hit or miss, I guess if that’s a weak point in ones game. Most people who really complain about his wake up do not know how to utilize his EX GF on wake up. You can also auto-correct that thang… sweet.
I’m doing awful tonight, I’ve won one match in about every 15 tries. I just don’t know how to get into any combo scenarios, where I can use st. or cr. hp into a lk Tatsu or a regular or EX Palm. I get scared when I get in the corner, sometimes I try to blockstring but the pressure is too much and I can’t get out, sometimes I use EX Tatsu, mostly it whiffs and I get punished for a third of my life, or I try to EX DF and can’t, or I do, they block my stuff and I go back to zoning with fireballs.
I can zone alright with them, and I can put together lp and lk strings when I get the chance, but I just can’t seem to mixup or crossup at all, or get into any combos. It sucks when Juri just hits me with a random or stupid (on my part) special kick move and does a 1/8 of my health.
Just frustrated with myself right now, and shotos who can DP on every wakeup
edit: Well I can’t do trial 12, so there has to be something wrong I’m doing. I can do DF, k, st. hp, but I can’t get the palm to come out. LP palm will come out, but by that time the dummy’s blocking so I’m not comboing it. What is the secret of inputting this? I’m trying during the animation of the hard punch but it doesn’t seem to come out. I cam stand there and do st. hp, palm, but not after DF.
Sounds like you are always trying to wake up and be on the offensive. Just wake up and block and be ready to tech. If they try to grab and you tech, it gives you some breathing room to work with.
EX Tatsu on wake up is a VERY RISKY move. You only do this for guaranteed punishes, or if you’ve caught on to someones rhythm and you know if they are going to attack. Other than that, Gouken is free lunch.
If you must be offensive, learn the timing of EX GF on wake up and the exact moment his invincibility wears off and when you have to make a choice or slide.
You can use GF or j. mk to cross them up. This is goukens staple shit after an untech.
The rest is just execution. Gotta hit up training mode and grind it out, as for the trials. Break them down into separate parts and brush up on the things you are having issues with and then try them.
I started doing a lot better after some fooling around with Adon and just reevaluating, option-select teching wakeups seems to be a lot better for me, and only EX DFing out of the corner or bad pressure situations when they have lots of EX to use. His cr. lk or cr. mk comes out good enough, and getting the hang of when to hit lk + lp + mk when they’re hugging me or close enough for cr. mk range is a lot better. I ended up finishing the night winning 9/10 games using this. I think the key with Gouken on wakeups is just be calm like you said, either OST out or block string, then start zoning again, or punish if available.
