Near the end of the video, can someone please tell me why the Ultra didn’t do full damage?
Thanks!
Probably because you’ve done it too late and he’d done his dive kick(don’t remember the name) just before you launched it.
Same stuff happens with Juri’s dive kick.
Doing it too late can result in the first hit connecting but them being too low afterwards for the second to continue juggling, it happens against crossups and regular jumpins.
Just some random ranked matches.

I’ll get footage of people who know how to play Rufus later.
First trip to Sydney for EVO APAC, and the Sydney guys held a casual/money match session for Daigo the night before EVO APAC. I was fortunate enough to have a few games with Daigo… He hardly misses his links… Just when you think you do quite well in the first round… Daigo just adapts, and I end up being on the receiving end of a combo video =(

Nice video derrace. Reminds me I need to work on anti-air with c.:mp:

I got bodied by SteveH this time around. St.roundhouse with Fei Long is really good in keeping Rufus out.
Anyway, some of these matches I get bodied. Some of them I put hands on the other player. Comment and offer suggestions, things to keep doing, things not to do, etc. If I fucked up somewhere obvious chances are I know it; still haven’t shaken those tournament jitters out yet.
Oh man, I didn’t know fei long’s s.rh was that good vs. rufus. This matchup keeps getting worse and worse in my eyes.
hahahaha that sounds just like what happened when I played vs. daigo. Everything is swinging until he decides to land a 60% combo to crush your dreams. Although I was sim at the time… so the crushing was much swifter
so far ive only watched the fei long one. What you’re doing wrong is that you are being way too agressive against fei, that is, you’re trying to force your way in and pressure, that is kinda wrong, try to be a bit more patient, there’s plenty of time on the clock so u can play a bit more defensive. also u were trying to approach by divekicking while fei is standing, try not to do that, because he can keep u out with his normals/flame kick/EX chicken wing, so basically try staying a bit more on the ground, use more your standing normals, so instead of forcing opportunities for u to get in, try to wait for them to come naturally, so when the right time to get in comes, u take full advantage of it and own him.
Omni:
I watched all of your videos. Gotta say your execution and knowledge is definitely on point. My biggest criticism though is your ground game. It’s basically non existent. Use more c.hp, c.hk, be johnny on the spot with anti airs, use more rolls, and triangle divekick fakes. I think that a big portion of your losses comes from your opponent knowing that you’re either going to a) do nothing or b) jump forward. Think about all the neutral jump and jump back normals you got hit by. That’s why. That goes similarly for times when you want to reset into a dive kick. If every time your dive kick and lk x2 gets blocked you either throw or reset, then they can just neutral jump or jump back for free. Mix up what you do after getting blocked more.
Similarly, check out those times when Fei was owning you with that s.hk. You were beginning to sweep him and low and behold he ate sweeps a good chunk of the time. That’s all about the ground game. Use fake dive kicks to into sweep, into c.mk xx ex GT, into ex messiah to bait big AA normals like that. Also, if you know your opponent likes to neutral jump, like steve, be ready to punish that shit with an ex ss. If you cant get that on reaction a quick standing cl.hp will do wonders vs neutral jumps and people who like to reset jump you all the time.
My Rufus was very very similar to yours about a month ago and then a talented player gave me some advice. “Stop using divekicks as your primary tool.” It worked wonders for my game. It kinda blew my mind because I thought that’s all Rufus was good at but then I kinda realized that I had to develop all aspects of my character even if he isn’t good at them, footsies, zoning, etc. Anyway, hope this helps, man.

This is a vid from my first week of maining rufus but its the only footage of my rufus that isn’t from 1st week of console release for vanilla.
Yes I’m FULLY aware I tried to bait EX SBK at all the wrong times and got hit by it at all the right times, but that was fixed after studying this vid. Just wanna see if you guys can pick up anything else. Waiting for footage from more recent tournies to be released.
Edit - watching it again I can’t believe he didn’t adapt… I pretty much just did dive kick s.lk… dive kick s.lk over and over and just hit confirmed it into combo if it hit.
You did well obviously. The Chun player on the other hand butchered the match up. I personally use U1 vs Chun because I find many more opportunities to combo into U1 than I do to find something to punish with U2. If the Chun player were better or more knowledgeable in the match up, you never would have gotten those U2’s off. Really all you’re looking to shut down from Chun by picking U2 are fireballs and jumps. Most Chun’s don’t jump as it is and I don’t find her fireball game much of a problem. That being said if they’re going to go ahead and throw fireballs into your U2 like this guy then by all means… pick U2.
hahaha, I only pick U1 against him now. As I said, first week of me using rufus and he didn’t know that U2 could reach that far.
pretty much the same exp here. after playing my friends viper like 20 matches he said something to me and it just made things click better. he said you dont always have to dive kick in and stop relaying on it as the only way to get in. there is nothing wrong with just walking and dashing in. of course be safe about it but yeah. and also sometimes its nice to mix up the dive kick with just a normal j.mk. it has good range and throws people off guard sometimes
Ta,
Rufus needs to be able to AA all the jump ins…
Started using U1 again, and boy am I getting spoilt for choices for ultra setup.
Anyone noted any bad habits or ways I can improve. I have been working on my execution, so it’s better now
derrace, I think the biggest thing I see in the Daigo match is that you never actually attacked him with dive kicks. You were doing well with your ground game but the entire set you were always dive kicking right in front of him and never dive kicking on him so he was just footsieing you relentlessly. It seems like you were just so afraid to get antiair’d that you never tried. If you’re getting relentlessly footsied like that and you think they’re going to react too quickly to a dive kick then dont be afraid to toss out an ex tornado or ex messiah to keep those close-med range footsies in check. Even if it doesnt work, it’ll make them a little more cautious and thus a little easier on you.
Yes, I know, that’s easy for me to say because I wasn’t playing the best Ryu in the world lol but I tried to forget about that when giving the advice. In reality, it’s probably pretty hard to give you good advice and tell what you’re doing wrong when you’re playing a player of Daigo’s calibur and in one of our worst matchups on top of it.
Hey thanks for the reply. The reason I didnt dive kick against him wasn’t out of respect, but it was because it wasn’t safe to do so. Every single game he played, his Ryu has never failed to SRK an unsafe jump. The reason I was doing those instant dive kicks was to bait the srk, which I did successfully a few times. I need to work out how to block those ambiguous cross up tatsu and jf.hk/mk. Playing him was probably the best experience SF gaming moment, and I wonder how the top guys take rounds off him consistently…
Ok so if he was always SRKing you AND you were getting footsied that much that probably meant he was buffering SRK a lot. I don’t care if you’re Daigo, Tomo, or the Pope. Dive kicks at close range are really really hard to react to if you’re not already buffering DP. The best way to handle a Ryu buffering DP a lot is to toss out some c.hk, c.mk, and maybe some standing pokes. If he’s pressing df, f, df, f then he’s not holding d/b, ya? The scary part of that is if you’re wrong you have to deal with Ryu’s footsies who basically dominate yours. Second of all, he must have been footsieing you and tossing out his c.mk and c.mp in reaction to your dive kicks landing in front of him. The way to beat that is to either dive kick in front of him -> ex messiah or dive kick in front right into another dive kick to land on the footsie.
If I had to guess, he was doing a healthy mixture of everything. If we could easily break down his game and find out where to beat him then he wouldn’t be who he is
