edit: double post
edit: there goes a bunch of your potential clientele, who would pay the $5 venue fee, spec the matches, watch the MMs and offer the venue their patronage in the form of alcohol sales + refreshments.
I’m trying to think of a SINGLE major or minor tournament where there have not been stations for Moneymatches AT LEAST, if not casuals…
Nope, can’t do it.
Sorry.
I seriously think this is a poor business decision.
You are attempting to engage US, the Ottawa SF community.
Feel free to get back at US here.
You’re stupid. I’m new to the scene but,
"I’m trying to think of a SINGLE major or minor tournament where there have not been stations for Moneymatches AT LEAST, if not casuals… Nope, can’t do it."
Why don’t you think harder, or maybe i’ll help. T11 / Nemesis 2
Ofc there are moneymatches. Especially ones that get streamed but thats reserved for the pros, but during the tournament?? Why the fuck would there be casuals?
Hey noob…
Nemesis 2 had casual stations for the duration of the SSF4 tournament.
I would know, because I ran the Marvel 2 station with the approval of Smokey and Phoun.
The only issue beforehand was SPACE.
Given that there WAS space, we ran the station.
Now, this venue has a premium on space, and realistically speaking the more people IN the venue, the more money it makes, and the closer Gaming Ottawa gets to balancing the books.
Ever heard of a BYOC area?
Fall the fuck back.
edit:
Additionally,
the Marvel station is SPECIFICALLY for Money Matches.
I don’t care about whatever else happens, but cats r coming through for marvel money matches who would AT LEAST be paying venue fees and for drinks etc.
Why would someone disregard that business?
Cmon meow.
Damn right your new to the scene, that ain’t how we do shit around here, this ain’t gamefaqs bro if you got a point to make you make it but you don’t go around calling people names just cause you don’t agree with their opinion. Back on topic, thats a little disappointing to hear, but it doesn’t change much for me, I was coming specifically for the tournaments so its all good in the long run.
lol, swizz didn’t exactly introduce himself in the best way, but he does have a good point. There really are very few major tournaments which offer space for people to come in and set up and allow you to play. I’m really glad that the organizers of Nemesis let you set up, but I do believe that is a rarity, and awesome that it happened.
We are not a “major” tournament (yet lol) but what we are trying to do is emulate those experiences in a way that is more accessible to random people coming in (I was treated as a rando when I traveled to the states and it sucked) and also affordable for the regulars to get real practice for when they do attend the major tournaments.
and jon, you know that the bottom line isn’t everything. If it was, we would be charging 10 to get in, 10 per entry, and no guaranteed pots. What we are trying to do, is host a sweet tournament.
Once any tournament has finished we will be opening up specific consoles for free play. If there is no one wanting to play the tournament game on that setup, then people can throw in another game for a bit -> tournament games will 100% always have priority.
I don’t really want to disagree with you on a public front but small side tournies/stations are pretty standard at almost every tourney. MAT, T series, every MTLSF event I’ve been to, Evo, SB, etc… While these have specific games they’re running tournaments for there is almost always space for side tournaments (everything) and/or BYOC (Evo). If the aim is specifically for Smash and SSF4 with no real desire to play host to other events/games then that’s fine but that’s where the confusion is stemming from for most people.
No one is suggesting that the stations for the tournament would be used for other games while the brackets are being run, that’s ridiculous. If there’s no problem using one or two of these setups for BB and/or Marvel after the brackets are done I think that will make for some happy people (especially if we can make one of the stations on PS3 for Marvel).
We have no desire to play host to other events/games. Our focus has always been on SSF4, and getting people out, and giving them the opportunity to play a tonne of matches with each other.
You know, everytime i threw a tournament where there were casual stations, people got MORE caught up in MM than finishing the tournament. Thus making my job harder.
Thats why you dont’ have casual stations during a tournament. Tournament gets done, then you can feel yourself after you win your MM all you want afterwards.
See the problem is, SSF4 is dead in Ottawa. I can count on one hand the number of Ottawa players who are considered SSF4 players. Yeah we might get more out than that at the ranbats, but most of the time it’s people just dickin’ around. Not only that, but some of the Ottawa players are likely to be out of town during the tournament too, lowering that number.
The only way a tournament in Ottawa is going to be successful is if you appeal to the masses and get other people out, who may then join in the SSF4/Brawl tournaments for shits and giggles.
With 1500sqft there’s tons of space for MKP to bring a crt and a PS3, and that alone would bring in 5-10 people minimum for hype money matches that were post-poned for the tournament, solely to add hype to the tournament. If it was expected that the games would be restricted to strictly Smash/SSF4, all the hype would have gone down last friday, at an event that is now likely to be the best this month.
TL;DR Ottawa sucks at gaming, and if the true intention of GO is to get Ottawa gaming up, then having a tournament for SSF4, which no one plays, and limiting it to mostly that, is a terrible terrible idea.
Both those events had MM’s and casuals of other games. No one is suggesting that it be run during the tournament, unless its off to the side, in which case it has NO interference.
Also, Money matches are not only reserved for the pros, at nemesis 2 I had my share of money matches, and I’m by no means a pro; but on that note, Ottawa plays host to some of the best XvSF players in the world…
How about, Ottawa stops bitching and supports this so the GO group realizes the potential and next time makes room for your requests. People need to appreciate what they are getting and support instead of being bitches. Fuck even Buddah and I are coming to support you guys.
Suck it up and stop whining.
The problem is, they aren’t listening to the community. For an organization like this to work with such a small amount of people, they really have to listen and understand the people from the community. None of the people working for GO (save Johnny) have been to an Ottawa gather as far as I’m aware (and I’ve been to 99% of them in the past year)
There’s no way they can do anything of value if they don’t work with the people they’re trying to support. When one of the two people they work with from the community starts saying it’s a waste of time, you know it’s a problem.
This is coming from a guy who offered up to help post posters and spread the word about the tournament all over Carleton, which I might add at this point I don’t believe has posters up still.
This isn’t a business, this is a community.
You’re a fucking retard. The guy clearly listened to the opinion of the community and gave you a CLEAR fucking answer.
HOW IS HE NOT LISTENING? JUST BECAUSE HE CAN’T SAY YES, YOU GUYS CAN COME DO WHATEVER THE FUCK YOU WANT? GET YOUR FUCKING HEAD ON STRAIGHT. GO Chocks out money from their own bank account to get a venue and make things happen, and you guys are GRIPING OVER 5 FUCKING DOLLARS. SERIOUSLY 5 FUCKING DOLLARS. WHAT DO WE LIVE IN POVERTY-VILLE!? Last time I checked Ottawa was fairly middle class.
Seriously stop whining like a bunch of cheap poverty welfare ladden bitches.
nah, ottawa is pretty poverty stricken
This is just uncalled for. The issue regarding the venue fees was one person who has since come to understand the issue and that isn’t even what iRockTheVote is talking about.
Regardless hopefully we can make this a success despite some of the perceived setbacks. I appreciate the support that people have shown, and the input (negative and positive) is still valuable.
Let’s roll with what we’ve got, make it a success, and hope that we can expand this out in future events to cover a wider audience.
I’m just an old tourney organizer who put blood sweat and tears into making shit happen and keeping things alive, and i’ve had my fair share of haters and doubters. I’m tired of seeing it.
Rage aside, I’m not complaining at all about the cost, for venue/tournament or anything.
I’m saying this is Ottawa, a city that has less than 10 SSF4 players. To get other people into the tournament you need to entice them. The marvel heads, the 3s heads, they largely don’t give a crap about SSF4. By not allowing them to run their own thing in a dark dusty corner on one TV, means losing attendance. It’s not about the money, it’s about the attendance.
Gillette here has been running our ranbat, hosting it, and working hard at the Ottawa fighting games community. His exampled should be followed if the point here is to make Ottawa gaming better.
Hey guys, just want to clear the air about the whole casual gaming thing.
There were a couple of posts made which including griping about the fact that someone would be required to pay a venue fee in order to bring their own setup and play MvC2. What we don’t want to see are people bringing their own setups and using the venue for free to play games not related to the tournament. We have no intentions of banning casuals on the side, in fact it is almost unavoidable to have that type of gaming at any event. Our major concern was that people were complaining about having to pay the venue to bring their own stuff and play.
If people are willing to pay the venue fee to bring their own setup and play then we are fine with that (and from what I’ve heard from talking with Gilette, that is the case). However, we have never guaranteed areas for those setups to be placed. The venue is being used for a tournament purpose and if there happens to be no room for the setup then you will have to wait for things to settle down and for people to start clearing before you can setup.
Lastly, we never had any intention of removing casual matches from the event when setups aren’t being used. If you wanted to bring a game disc and there was a setup free to use then you would’ve had the ability to hop onto it and use it to play a friendly. If we needed the setup for the tournament we would’ve kicked you off.
I believe that most of this has just been a classic case of miscommunication. I thought I had made things pretty clear with my first post but apparently I didn’t so hopefully this clears things up a little and we can get back to making this a fantastic event. Because we need you guys to help get it going and to keep these monthlies going in the future
Fantastic, good to have this cleared up! I think most of the confusion was some poor wording when comparing your posts to Ben’s.
For the record I -never- said that I was disinclined to pay the venue fee.
My specific argument was that having the Marvel station (which I am willing to provide in its entirety) guarantees more attendants, all of whom WILL pay the venue fee and some of whom will likely enter either tournament.
I’m not sure where it all got twisted, and I understand where RXS is coming from, but in no way was the vs-series community asking to be allowed in for free to have side events without paying venue fees.
That is simply not what was proposed in any form, and I regret that things seem to have gotten to the point where that was inferred.
FYI, Ottawa has amongst the highest median per-family incomes in the country, and the highest outside of Oil Land aka Alberta, so chill with calling people poor (like that’s some sort of bad thing? cmon meow.)
Peeps, come get it @ the SSF4 and Brawl tournaments.
If you’re down with MVC2, come bet it at the station.
And pay your venue feels people, don’t be a sucka.
Cheaping out on venue fees is like being a bad tipper. You think people don’t notice until EVERYONE’s shitting on you.
